Because dropships are supposed to be transport and support vehicles they should have no turret in the final version or at least when more aerial vehicles are introduced. Since we can open the doors it would be better to let passengers shoot out of it when the doors are open with the restriction to light and sidearm weapons. |

Good idea but lets make it optional. turrets have a lot to offer on the battle field
lol get a Drop ship with a Forge gunner, mass driver and a HMG and you have your own AC-130. |

A flying vehicle with multiple people inside packing swarm launchers would be incredibly powerful against vehicles. I mean, being able to engage tanks with up to 4 swarm launchers at once, in such a way that all the rockets hit and the tank can't run... it'd be bad for tanks, anyway. Meanwhile, the guys shooting with assault rifles and stuff would never kill anyone and waste all their ammo in the process of trying to hit fast moving targets from a fast moving vehicle at long range.
Anyway, so what it's a transport, one small turret each side is hardly a big deal. You don't see these vehicles as amazingly powerful things that dominate battlefields. There's nothing wrong with transport vehicles having door guns. And it strikes me as far better than the alternative you described. |

That would be nice but heavy weapons would be really too strong.

Virtually every transport helicopter currently used today has some sort of gun mount, whether that be a door-gun or some other variation. Dropships should absolutely have turret mounts to allow the suppression of enemies near the drop area, and to keep enemies in cover when you're landing to pick people up. The only reason they seem excessive now is because they don't have any limitation of ammo. |

forge gun maybe. HMG would be fine though. |

I don't see why not allowing all weapons to be fired, as long as the backblast from firing the weapons transferred to the dropship. Firing a forge gun in flight would rock the dropship pretty far to the side, probaby just slightly less than getting hit by it. |

When gunships, bombers, and fighters come out, dropships won't exactly have superior aerial firepower- might as well not make them defenseless. |

Six guys firing swarm launchers from a dropship is far more powerful that two guys shooting small missile turrets. I don't think they want the dropships to be a serious, powerful combat vehicle. Eventually there'll be other, actual combat air vehicles. By that time, hopefully the maps will be large enough that the dropship will have a valuable role as a transport and won't need stuff like six guys firing mass drivers and swarm launchers from it in order to be worthwhile. |

This would be not as much of a problem when they get some restrictions to their shooting angle too. Right now there are two struttings on each side and could be just allowed to shoot out between them. So not six people can shoot at the same target but two or max three. You also have to lock on and this could be very hard if you are in a moving dropship.

But almost all transport craft in use today have some sort of defensive armament mounted on the vehicle. Hell, even the landing craft at D-day had thirty caliber machine guns mounted on them.
It seems like taking defensive armament away from the Dropships would be a massive step back in viability and just logic in general. |

To counter that they should have more armor, not more offense. Realistically in that type of setup:
Dropships should have the most armor. Gunships the second most armor. Bombers the third most armor. Fighters the least armor. |

It's a cool idea, but it would be completely imbalanced. Get a few good AR guys in there, keep the ship steady and just own face. Everyone keep AV nades equipped, I'll park above the tank, done and done.
I'd like to shoot out of dropships too, it's just not practical in terms of balance, at all. |

Whether there are angles involved or not, it's really aside from the real issue. The real issue is that dropships are transport aircraft, and having six guys firing the right kind of guns from the side of them would be much more powerful than one small turret per side. Does CCP want dropships to be powerful in this sense? Would they prefer that combat aircraft be added to shore up the gaps in this sense? Perhaps. Either way, there isn't a right answer here, it's simply CCP's prerogative. |

Another suggestion is giving them six very small turrets with a bit higher dps than an AR. |

I think it'll end up like that anyway, except gunships will have the most armor. |
