Since not everyone plans to have a corporation i think the best explanation to move planet to planet singularly would be via the use of shuttles. Think about it:
No skill requirements
No weapons to fight eve players with
Relatively fast
Cheap
Any thoughts or other suggestions of how a merc should travel new eden other than giving everyone and their grandma a war barge? |

There could be a neural consciousness network built in high security space, allowing near instantaneous 'jumps' from one station to another without the need to traverse space. Similar to how jump clones work, but without the cost or expense given the advances made in DUST cloning technology. |

That's a cool idea, but are they going to FedEx you your gear? |

I don't see why not. They technically do that every time you buy something in a battle anyway. It's not like you can travel to the stations to pick up your stuff. |

It's kind of funny how you can tell the people who play EVE form those who don't simply by how far down the rabbit hole they try to go. When I first read some Dev blogs about Dust, one of the things I liked a lot was how they gave lore for everything--the gun, the vehicles, etc, down to the science(fiction) behind how they all worked.
As long as these explanations never interfere with gameplay, I'm all for interesting speculation. |

We're aboard war barges so that would mean there is some kind of market on it and smart players buy in bulk |

How about the "Jump Clone" idea, and no the gear does not go with you. Buy new gear at new base, but the "Jump" is free. Could always setup a courier contract for the gear left behind for a later date. Then we would have to weigh the upside and downsides of every relocation. |

Compared to my idea, it seems needlessly complicated and up to chance |

Not really, Capsuleers go though this every time they move to new regions. After all we are going to live in the same New Eden as them. Besides war in New Eden is won by logistics first. The preparation for war is often more important than the battle. |

There IS NOT going to be ANY shuttling, at least not as it is in EVE, it can take 30 mins just to hop a few regions over in a shuttle in EVE, and that is NOT what CCP are going to do as they are trying to keep the casuals in, and they arent going to sit at their PS3 staring dumbly at the screen as they wait 30 mins for one game (hell they get angry at the 45 second waiting period between games in COD )
Im 99% sure its going to be 'jumping' from station to station, and im also sure that CCP said you dont have any tangible gear until you are in the actual match, all you are buying on the market are BPC's (blueprint copies that produce one item of whatever BPC it is of) thus BPC's (data) can be instantaneously sent along with your merc.s conscience.
The corp that hire's the mercs pays for material costs for the gear, in high sec NPC corps pay for gear so thats how we are getting our stuff in the beta, and how everyone will get it when they start off

This.
Jump Clone technology is the stuff that capsuleers use for the above reason. Plus, jump cloning also helps get around station camps (when your opponent camps you in the undock area of the station outside) so long as the capsuleer in question prepares his clones ahead of time.
This same technology seems reasonable to use in Dust 514 when moving from one station to another. But I guess the jump clones have to be placed on the destination ahead of time by the player somehow or by the NPC that owns the station you are either moving from or moving to.
One way to solve this is by using a spool-up period between jumps to stations you haven't visited yet. Once you jumped to that station, there would be no spool-up time required since both your originating station and that of your destination now have both of your clones ready. But as soon as you decide to visit another station you didn't go to, the spool-up time kicks in.
The spool time can be dictated by the system's security status and number of stargate jumps between two systems.
Within High-sec: 5-30 minuted depending on distance. From High-sec to Low-sec: 5-15 minutes depending on distance and because ships can cynosural jump from high-sec to low-sec without the need for a stargate. Withing Low-sec: 5-15 depending on distance. Within Hull-sec: 5-10 depending on distance.
Or....
We could just go with whatever CCP pulls out of its own buttocks. |
