On the front Page this morning Olivia put up a question asking people's preferences about Alliance organizations and which archetype people would find most appealing and effective.
This is merely asking for opinions, not asserting any one or the other as being dominant.
The choices are:
Oligarchy - Oligarchies are best understood as aristocratic, top-down ruled organizations similar to a real-life conglomerate. This doesn't discount the majority of the alliance but it does leave leadership to a select group of individuals; typically the founders or "revolutionaries" of the organization.
Confederacy - Most people know the word Confederacy from the U.S. Confederacy, meaning a group of states in revolt. A confederacy however is effectively one tier below a Federacy, in which Corporations share collective interests but remain separate on those interests they differ. Confederacies occasionally have a head, but the head is for the most part a symbolic figure and representative.
Federacy - A Federal system is a system by which collective interests and differing interests are clashed together democratically to form a policy and to form leadership. The means by which power is exercised can vary, however one of the principal aspects of a Federation is the collaboration of interests despite differences. Federal Systems are also formally known as Republics
Paramilitary - Some of the most successful organizations are paramilitary organizations because they discredit the notion or need for social tools like democracy and supplement them with effective tools for management. This includes promoting leaders and notable individuals based on their skill and proficiency at combat, as opposed to their ideas or their notions of policy. They do have their drawbacks as well, sometimes being incapable of open-minded about the direction of policy.
Other - Obviously there are more types of organizations that is listed here, so an other category has been made. The four categories listed above are the 4 most broadly defined organizational methods, and typically Corporations fall easily into one of those categories. An example of another type would be a Communistic setup, which could vary in multiple forms.
As always, stay classy New Eden. |

Haha...as part of RG I'd have to Agree ;D
Sometimes it can be difficult though to separate a Communist Dictatorship from an Oligarchy. "Communistic Organizations" can exist in multiple forms, IMO.
The Soviet Union would be an example of an Oligarchy. Native Americans are sometimes considered "primitive communists" by social theorists and historians. They could be an example of a different arrangement of equality. |
