I have been testing this game for less than a week, have been actively participating in this forum, and have only commented on things I have direct experience with. Today I read a post by SYST3M OV3RLOAD and realized it was time to stop exploring the game and start analyzing it.
We have been brought in on the ground floor of something that could potentially define the future of cross-platform, massive multiplayer gaming. I know people are upset about nerfed tanks, concerned about ISK Thukkers, and frustrated with some of the game mechanics. But I have also noticed that CCP is working to address most of these issues. CCP Wolfman has already commented on the Thukker grenades this evening, and his logic makes sense to me.
I'm not trying to preach to everyone, because 99% of the comments here are tremendous and helpful in terms of defining what this game will look like when it comes out. But I'm also not going to pass judgement on those who choose to boost, spam Thukkers, and exploit any other loophole/bug they can find in this game.
Our job is to break the mechanics, exploit the bugs, and find any unfair advantage we can in this game. The ISK and skillpoints will not be in our accounts on the day of release, or even after the next build. All we will have is the experience of how we have shaped this game, the pride of what we have delivered to the larger gaming community, and maybe a perk or two (permanent drop suit, weapon, etc) from CCP when it's done. That last part's wishful thinking, but one can hope.
I know I will probably get flamed for this, and I'm not trying to pass judgment on anyone or point fingers. But it sounds like most of us are looking to have this be a turning point in the future of FPS games, and a new phase in the future of gaming. CCP has shown they are watching, tweaking, and taking our actions and requests into consideration. So boost your points, get the big toys, and come gun me down. But when you're done, report any issues and/or feedback you have on the forum. That's well worth a drop suit in my book.
After all, what are a couple virtual deaths compared to years of gaming enjoyment?
Happy hunting! |

Indeed I do. It's a shame it got buried in that thread of vitriol this afternoon. You are welcome to copy and paste it in this one, as it was very well written. |

Dzark Kill wrote:IMO boosting is wrong. i understand this is BETA were supposed to break things, find bugs and exploits etc. Once they're found report them and move on for more hunting. To continuously abuse an exploit in a beta is just as bad as it is in a full game. Well done you repaired you own LAV,HAV, dropship every second of every match and have you 70 million skill point. But whilst doing this did you never think about the effect your having on other players. Why should you contributing nothing to the team get the Lions share of the available skill points, whilst the rest of the Beta community is running around testing everything they can and contributing to the team effort aswell and getting nothing because they didnt get +25 every second of the match?
Or do you suggest the whole 24 men should crash lavs into each other and stand round repping them. That'd be so much fun.
Grow up and get out of the selfish mentality hermitting in you mums basement has taught you. All action carry consequence it might do you well to consider them once in a while.
Carry on looking for Bugs and exploits adn keep trying to break things. But when you have success fille the report and move on. Do not exploit and exploit what ever selfish motivations you have (even if you try to disguise them with this is BETA) .
I do not disagree with any of this, but SYST3M does make a good point in that it's a fast SP gain that will allow more players to get the toys that most will not get before the next wipe. The more people who use the toys, the more data CCP will have to find any bugs that arise with them. The only caveat with that is the fact that people need to be doing the boost FOR THAT PURPOSE. But as you have stated, this is not necessarily the case. I for one will not be doing it. The bug has been found and people are exploiting it. For me, it's time to move on and find the next thing.
Thanks for the honest input.
Edit: To clarify my statement in the last paragraph, I am NOT saying people need to be doing the boosting. But if they are going to, then it should serve the greater purpose of finding issues with the game. The only way they will stop is if the bug is fixed, and I too hope that happens soon.
Tyas Borg wrote:I'm not sure you get the idea of a beta Dzark.
I don't need the SP at all far from it, but do we need that bug squashed?, the answer is yes.
How badly do you think the grind would affect the game at launch in retail?. I certainly don't want it there when these games start to matter.
The fact is we need to break the game, that's what we're here for.
Not to play the game early or get the advantage on people, like so many think is the reason to get into a beta these days. You'll see these same people saying the game is "Crap" and how "they're not playing it anymore"
We're here to state facts on what we find balanced, broken or just plain not working. The amount of posts I see here with people more concerned with their K/D or losing their stuff to something is horrible.
What makes this worse is it's usually people commenting on something they either don't even have or just don't have the first clue on it. They just know it killed them.
I completely agree here as well. Both of you aren't exactly saying different things. You will find my posts in feedback and bugs regarding things that I find to "bump" me. Whether they are valid or not, I feel like it is my obligation to point them out and bring them up for discussion with the other testers here. The feedback may be panned, applauded, and even implemented. I am but one of many here, and all we can do is point out the issues that bother each of us and let the larger consensus dictate their progression.
On the particular topic of boosting, everyone that has commented here appears to be on the same page. But as long as the exploit exists, should it not be used to achieve the greater purpose of finding bugs in the higher levels of the game by those who choose to exploit it? Otherwise, as Dzark stated, those who do it are merely here for bragging rights at being in on the BETA. |

knight of 6 wrote:great post. there are a lot of things I would love to try with this game but. it to expensive to try weird stuff like rocket jumping with forge guns and spawning tanks on the top of dropships (flying tanks!).
I hear you. I burned 4mil ISK on 50 dropsuit loadouts alone a couple days ago. Since there will be at least two more wipes of our ISK and SP, I have taken the approach that I can be flat broke and still have access to the Starter kits. They aren't pretty, but they'll get the bank account back up...eventually. :)

To Dzark and DOOM and anyone else with the same perspective,
To be clear, I'm torn on the specific subject of boosting. On one hand i do want the higher end gear to be tested thoroughly and on the other hand I'm not completely thrilled those people will then be running around slaughtering me. It's a matter of taking the good with the bad.
The fact that the game will be wiped means there is really no reason for anyone to be complaining about anything. If people are boosting to increase their shield, armor, DPS, etc. yea, i see that as abuse and not really helping anything. Me? I've got all of those things maxed already without boosting. The only thing boosting would allow me to do is explore new things that i otherwise could not. That's what i support. But i also realize i can't be judgemental about it and must accept that people will do it for both reasons. That's the whole point of discussing this. To give the people that only see it as an advantage to consider exploring new things instead to better the game. I really don't understand with an imminent wipe, why anyone would bother boosting to increase their advantage. It's pointless. But if they want to do it, they can knock themselves out for all i care.
It's not a matter of "hiding behind the beta". Everything you do in a beta is fair game. As long as you report exploits and yes, move on. However, if there's something that allows you to continue to explore new things, then whether or not you should "move on" is a tricky subject.
I've decided that i'm ok with people running around slaughtering me with proto everything if it has potential to bring something OP/bugged to the surface for CCP to take a second look at. That's my choice. You have the right to feel differently but guess what? There's nothing you can do about it. It isn't against the rules (in this beta stage) and therefore you've got no choice but to accept it or continue to get upset over it. I don't know about you, but I've got more important things to worry about.
All of that said, will i be hardcore boosting? Nope, and i kind of feel bad about it. You read that right. I feel i'm one of the few that wouldn't abuse something like that but instead use it to explore new gear and test things. Yet, the time it takes to boost makes it not really worth it too me. However, if something strange pops in my mind that i think is plausible and the only way for me to test the theory is to boost, will i do it? Absolutely. I'll spend as much time as necessary to uncover an exploit and you should too.
To all of you who complain about "hurting the team" and not helping to win a battle, 75% of the time you will see me on the front lines with my AR sending you back to the respawn screen or maybe you sending me back to mine. The other 25% of the time, if i want to spend hours trying to get inside a building or a rock that i'm not supposed to, attempt to cause myself to fall through the map, or anything else that you deem to be hurtful to the final score of the game, that's my choice and frankly, my job as a tester. If i had the choice of a local, private, unranked server that's where i'd be, but i do not have that option. If you see me boosting, i could be gaining an advantage, sure, or i could actually be trying to test a new theory which if you interfere only slows me down and makes me have to do it again in the next game. Who are you to pass judgement without knowing why i'm actually doing it?
If you aren't interested in helping to fix the game and your only concern is playing it at face value, you shouldn't be in a beta. Wait for release when we've all put in the time and effort to actually test things, find problems and fix them, and then you can enjoy your exploit free gameplay.
You're welcome.
lol, damn man. CCP needs to give you a bonus. Completely agree and if we're ever in a match, I'll either be standing beside you or gunning for your arse.
Don't stop posting. You are one of the few whom I actively seek out to find your insight. I'm encountering the angry few all over the place calling me a whiner and attacking my gunplay as the culprit. Let's do our job and let the rest deal with their own conscience. |
