The new physics for the Dropships are great, I love them and don't want them changed. However it is now currently a very difficult and slow process to actually land a dropship, this should not be since quick picking up of friendly soldiers is a key function of an effective dropship. The main thing preventing a dropship from landing quickly is it's inability to effectively slow down, it has to nose up and apply reverse thrust with it's main engines in order to lose forward momentum. So how to solve this problem without going back to the old boring physics that just allowed dropships to fly around and smush other mercs all day?
Air Brakes!
Now exactly how you decide it fits in with the technology present in Dust and all is up to CCP, I imagine instead of flaps that pop out to slow down using wind resistance we would get forward pointed thrusters that activate when you press R1, all that matter is that we get something that slows the ship down without forcing us to nose up and slam on L1. It makes a ton of sense that such an advanced aircraft would have some means of slowing itself down and will actually allow us to fly in somewhere moving fast, pop the brakes and bring the craft down low for a pickup/drop off without simply getting shot out of the sky. |

I agree.
It's kinda ridiculous that a less then perfect smooth landing, will result in a ground bounce that will either flip your bird over or just knock out half it's health.
Even if you can pull out a perfect landing, trying to do that in a perfectly quiet map is hard enough, but with enemy AV, vehicles its impossible.
I hope they can fix it, but keep the current flight mechanics, sure it's hard, but half the fun is mastering it. |

Yes, keep flight mechanics but add a land option or an air brake.
oh yeah, and chafes/flares for dodgeing swarmers |

I never have a problem landing a DS, but wondeful idea, it would be good to have some kind of breaking mechanism! |

I noticed there is a landing gear that comes out if you're really close to the ground, then I slam my DS down without any worry.
Really could do with some air breaks and some flares though, these things are like paper. |

Landing a dropship without taking damage, or at least not very much damage, is pretty easy. Practice a bit and you'll be able to do it no problem. I've had to perform a couple sudden landings to rep my dropship.
Don't do that when you're running with randoms. Someone will steal your dropship. |

Was just flying my DS around on an Ambush match, got hit by a Swarm after take off, smashed into a box and died..
Should really look at perhaps making the Knockback lower when we're hit by Swarms |

As much as i hate swarms, i disagree with you.
Knock back is the physical consequences of being hit, i really can't argue how nerfing this feature will add anything constructive except make a dropship players life easier, yet doesn't address the real problem.
Collision mechanics and the explosive resistance of the armour/shields of the Dropship.
This needs to be sorted out, if we can not land to drop troops off or to repair how can we hope to keep it in battle or reward a player for risking all the isk to field this war machine? Or the fact that it's hard to find anything useful to modify the dropship to counter the anti-air threats. Since the limit of the map, prevents the use of the terrain for cover. |

Change the controlls of them: Thrust/brake on the left stick up/down Nose up/down on right stick up/down and fix the camera to the nose Looking down on L2 like looking back at the LAV
So you can adjust the speed better |

This will sound hypocritical to the people who closely follow my posts (which I assume is everyone, because I'm super popular) but I'm becoming pretty okay with a big reduction in the dropship knockabout. It used to be you could fly around with a fair degree of impunity, so staying high was the way to go. At that point losing control from hits was the biggest danger a dropship faced, but was something you could recover from.
That isn't true anymore, we have to fly at nearly ground level to avoid swarms. Down there even a light swarm hit can be a death sentence. |

make the dropship fligh like a transport slow it down make it much more stable in flight and allow for easy change in vector, but if they do that they would have to increase HP and its EHP against AA because a transport is meant to carry troops, not fly around and bombard players from the air like they do now.
a dropship should be used to ferry troops to objects and provide fire support as they land, not to circle in the air and shoot down on people. now when i say slow them down slow them down on the side to side motion mostly and slighty slow them down in forward motion dont overkill it CCP like you are so fond of. but the dropships need to be more stable and easier to land if they are going to be transports |

I know this sounds like heresy, but i like the controls.
Getting quite good at it, in fact.
I really have no problems with the controls of the flight mechanics, its just the landing, the frigging landing, without damaging the ship or making it bounce....

I havent played with navigating anything other than the stock LAV that I had from the start... but I think that if they gave you a button you could hold down and the ship would automatically slow to a stop and start a gentle landing cycle as long as it was held. It gives the new players a way of making certain they dont accidentally kamikaze into a landing, but also has the drawback of making them an easy target while they're trying to set down. You still have to learn how to pilot close enough to the ground so you wont get blown outta the sky, so its not an easy button...
Of course, im still annoyed that im not able to hop out of a dropship in mid flight... im in a suit that drops from orbit! |

You can jump out in midflight, Hit X on your way down (dunno the keyboard equiv or Move) and you'll land safely. |

Where are the lift thrusters mounted on a dropship? If the thrusters act like the vector thrusters of a vtol aircraft you should be able to rotate them to face forward and therefore reduce your speed to nil and go backwards. Best tatic to use with Harrier Jump jets (slam on brakes & force chaser craft to overshoot). what power is used for fireing the thrusters? Is there a retro rocket pack on the nose? |

Air brakes are not needed. If you are flying at top speed and approaching a stopping point, all you have to do is turn the opposite direction you are going, while at the same time, rotate your thrusters at the direction you are going. It's easier to show in a video than it is describing it in text. But if you do it right, your controller will start vibrating (as if you are braking really hard). You will find (with practice) that you will achieve accurate results when breaking at a drop-off point.

TIP:
Don't try to land nose-first Don't try to land by laying on L2- how many real aircraft land by hitting the ground as fast as possible? |
