Hey, I've been playing Dust514 for about a month now on and off. I love the game, and although the gun game isn't top notch and even probably subpar - I still love how the MMO character progression is mixed within a FPS. MMO-FPS-RPGs are my favorite of all gaming genres. However it looks like CCP is turning away from character progression within regards to the higher level suites Shields/Armor normalization.
I understand the reasoning behind it but I definitely don't agree with it. I never had a problem where I was getting stomped JUST because some guy was running with a prototype suit and I was in something inferior. And if this did happen so what? He put more time into the game then I did and had a better load out. I'm fine with this. There was never any reason to change the values because honestly as nice as extra CPU/PG is - it's not always worth the extra cost.
So how should CCP go around it? Simple... Normalize the suites like they did, but give the more advanced suites a lot more CPU/PG and slots. Now why should they do this? Simple - more customization. IMO customization and the ability to cater to your own play style is a very GOOD thing. That way if I want to be a glass cannon in a scout suit I can load up on Weapon Upgrades... If I want to instead take more damage I can load up on more shield extenders and armor upgrades. This would make it so every enemy has a completely set up and you don't know exactly what to expect. It would also make the game last longer in terms of skill progression. More CPU/PG/Slots = more skills needed to fill those slots. More builds to test out, and more ways to enjoy Dust that CCP never expected.
I understand it would make balancing very difficult but you know what? There will ALWAYS be FOTM, and I doubt DUST will avoid it.
Also, the change to AUR items IMO is ridiculous. I don't want this game to be Pay to Win - however I DO think that people who do pay should at least get something worth while. I want this game to be very successful so it gets more support and content. However many people won't pay unless they feel they are getting some type of great deal. I'm willing to drop 20$+ a month to enjoy and support a game if the content of what I'm paying for is worth it. If I don't feel like I'm getting a good deal then there why not just save money and play the game for free?
I'm not sure how to balance AUR items, but I didn't feel they were OP at all to begin with. I'm not sure about other people but if I wanted to play dress up and pay for unique customization. I'd buy some barbie dolls.Blink
TL:DR Give back the HP for the more advanced suites or instead give more CPU/PG/Slots so there is greater customization. Prototype suites SHOULD be powerful, and characters with more skills and money SHOULD be able to withstand more and have an edge. Dust514 would benefit greatly from the "carrot and stick" mentality of "If I play more, I'll get stronger, and better items and start to stomp enemies that use to wipe the floor with me". Nothing like getting your ass handed to you just to come back and destroy the same perHey, I've been playing Dust514 for about a month now on and off. But you are constantly gaining SP which is the true progression since your skills are always on and always in effect.
I'll put it in EVE terms, you can always level up and progress up and up and up into bigger and badder ships...but most PvP combat is done in the lower half of the ship progression simply because its less expensive. I mean sure sometimes people will bring T2 battleships and Carriers and Titans to battle, but the majority of PvP is going to be in Battlecruisers and below. My point being, if Dust consists of mostly Militia and Standard equipment combat....I see that as working properly.
Also keep in mind that suits and gear currently do not gain passive bonuses from skill levels. For example Amarr Heavy might get +3% Armor HP per level of Amarr Heavy Dropsuit Operation. This still encourages people to continue skilling up because it will continue to improve the gear they're using, even if they're not using better gear.
I understand your concern about progression within the game, but remember that not all systems are in place right now. The good news is that we've been promised to skill bonuses in the next build, and I can only hope its the passive bonuses I mentioned above. |

Normalized gear is never a good thing in any MMO. Period. The fact of the matter is a lot of people are fully avoiding any prototype suits as without the Exta HP there really isn't THAT much of a benefit.
How many o you seriously couldn't kill prototype suits in a militia? I don't recall once having the problem and thinking "damn if only he wasn't in one". They were balanced we'll IMO. Enough so that it wasn't a "I win" button but definitely gives an edge. As it should.
Like I said before through I think the best thin for CCP to do is to increase module slots across the board. Make it so we have more options to deck oh the later suits. Would be great fun trying new builds.
One of my worries is that the different racial suits won't be drastically different like they are in EvE. An Amarr frigate was no where close to being like a Caldari. So we'll see how it is. |

As far as character progression goes, I would like to see more items. I wish there were 5 tiers of items, one for every level of operation or whatever skill allows you to use them. They don't have to be drastically better, but it would make the trip a lot more interesting, and could possibly increase the longevity of the game. I know a lot of items haven't been released yet, but I am just giving my thoughts on how the game is now.
I would also like to see more skills. Instead of having one skill that takes a lot of SP to level up, why not have 3 skills that you must complete to unlock that 4th one. All the while you are gradually getting stronger and opening up new options for progression. For example, if I wanted to be a logistics player and specialize in mechanics, I could get lvl 1 mechanics which would unlock two different paths, each with their own perks, items, ect. and so on.
More items, more skills, more customization.
I understand that the gap between top teir, time invested players, and day one mercs can't be too large as long as they are playing together. I would like the gap to be much larger with a ranking system and games/lobbies designed for each.
When I first started playing the game, it felt really in depth with lots of possibilities, but after only about three weeks, I am becoming so terribly bored. |

normalized suits are better less about gear winning your fights and more about YOU the player being good u still get an advantage for higer tier gear u just arent a demi god anymore when faced with weaker gear
small advantages > demi god status this is an FPS 1st and foremost so lets keep it as PLAYER SKILL BASED as possible and not about who no lifed more |

Buff suits a little, beyond more modules and CPU/PG. Give me some extra shields, or armor, or speed. Not alot, but a little. Even if it is just a token jesture of 20 hp. that is 1/2 a bullet. |
