The Great Northern War
Adapted from Jasmine Constantine's series of posts here: http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=299231&page=2
The Combatants
The GNW formally began when Reikoku Corporation publicly declared war on the Phoenix Alliance in the summer of 2004. In the days that followed Jericho Fraction, several other independent corps, Black Nova, Evolution, Unicor Alliance and eventually Fade Union and Confederation of Deklein all declared war against the PA as well in a coordinated effort to isolate the most powerful northern state at that time.
Anti-PA Forces
On the GÇ£rebel allianceGÇ¥ / NCA (Northern Coalition of Alliances) as the anti GÇ£PAGÇ¥ side was initially known:
Reikoku (veteran merc corp of the first venal wars, who had won glory and respect in the campaign against Taggart Transdimensional and the Pirate alliances in the time of the NVA)
Jericho Fraction (political troublemakers and radical freespacers, not militarily powerful but very skilled in the art of building coalitions and manipulating public opinion GÇô long term allies and friends of Reikoku and their support in the GNW was payback and mutual interest for RKK support in times before.)
Black Nova (members of NORAD and allies of Reikoku who helped the veteran mercs establish the first major alliances in Fade and Deklein regions and who similarly aided those fledgling alliances alongside RKK in the defeat of the 2nd incarnation of the Forsaken Empire in tribute.)
Evolution (long term powerhouse of a corp whoGÇÖd had an interest in Venal since Ragnar of TTI tried messing with them in politics and intrigue in the VA (first venal alliances) vs FA (original fountain alliance) days.
Unicor Alliance (a number of anti PA corps building a holding in Tribute and Vale and Geminate who saw the PA as a threat to their independence and didnGÇÖt like PA deals with the pirates of TPS GÇô the pirate syndicate)
Fade Union (alliance in Fade who owed RKK and Black NOVA friendship and favours following the latter corps support of FU against Forsaken Empire pirates)
Coalition of Deklein (alliance in Deklein who owed their existence to RKK corp pretty much, since RKK had actually captured the first capturable station in eve and handed it onto CoD alliance to boost their settlement GÇô CoD was also an ally of the anti Forsaken Empire wars).
Pro-PA Forces
On the GÇ£empireGÇ¥ / GÇ£Pro Phoenix AllianceGÇ¥ side:
The Phoenix Alliance (and this was the proper phoenix alliance complete with all its famous member corps who have now left and gone onto other things. Industrial giants like RONA Corp and RONA-Vortex and Oberon and CDI, combat experts like BladeRunners and Occasius Republica and RONA-KIA and North Star Networks and GODS and Cutting Edge and Cataclysm Enterprises, and Battlestars, the list goes on, and make no bones about it, at the time the GNW began the PA was one of the most powerful entities in the whole of Eve and the things its corporations have gone onto achieve since their departure should leave nobody in any doubt of that.)
The Pirate Syndicate (initially involved primarily to neutralise Unicor alliance the TPS was a very cunning and skilled alliance of pirate nere-do-wells and schemers who won their theatre handily and ensured the Tribute, Vale front of the GNW was generally secure for the PA throughout.)
The Curse Alliance/Curse successors (in pretty much their last ride of glory the CA fighters came to support the PA in varying numbers both in their original colours and later in their C4/Imperium colours, their interest was making sure the PA stayed alive long enough for their own problems in the south to be resolved without interference from the NCA allies and various other interests).

Events of the War
As for what started it, well it was actually pretty simple:
Halseth Durn of the PA had a dream to unite all the north in one huge super alliance to dominate the northern territories in power and peaceful commerce and control the approach to Jove space when the jump gates opened to those distant territories. To do this he tried to sign up all the northern alliances to a mutual defence pact. Problem was that individual corps were not invited and this left them out in the cold and targets for alliance malfeasance. Case in point was the Tribute stations that Reikoku had captured from the old Forsaken Empire (mk2) GÇô CDI and Oberon corps within the PA moved on these stations and wanted to add them to the general PA NAP plan/patrolled space. Tensions flared and shots were exchanged. This led to a lot of bad feeling and RKK ships kept getting shot by CDI pilots and eventually RKK and friends went to the PA and gave them an ultimatum to kick CDI out of the alliance or face war. PA refused the ultimatum and the war started.
Now this whole process took a month or so and truth to tell some of RKKGÇÖs friends (like us, evolution, and others) knew that PA would never kick CDI regardless so plans were made to ensure that if war came it would be on our terms. Jade and Alexandra Belani and Molle and Galavet and Lion and Phonix and Taz and Blacklight and others had plans made of the coming war and it was no surprise when PA told RKK to go to hell so the plans triggered immediately. ThatGÇÖs why it got so big so fast.
It was a proper plan for a general multiregional war. All the corps involved had deployed forces and ships in the build up. It was like a superpower showdown and explosion of failed brinksmanship. The greatest Alliance power of the age against a grand coalition of enemies ready to claim its corpse, all that was needed was to light the blue touch paper.
When PA told Galavet of RKK that they refused his ultimatum to eject CDI all he had to do was switch RKK to PA standings to -10 and pick up the communicators and say GÇ£its onGÇ¥. And the biggest war in the history of eve ignited.
As for its greatest moments?
The massive sense of anticipation during the build up was very very special. Being the second corporation to formally declare and watching the PA laugh at little Reikoku and insignificant Jericho daring to bark at the big dog alliance was pretty funny too. First 24 hours we had a fight in Venal and were outnumbered about 30 to 1 and it was hilarious to listen to the smack talk from those guys saying how weGÇÖd be crushed and fiscally annihilated in the full knowledge that the next 72 hours would bring another 3-4 full alliances into the war against them.
It was also the war that saw the first major use of interceptors in the game and everyone seemed to be flying them and having a blast. I flew Ares and Taranis and did pretty well but Crows were the order of the day, back then they could fit cruise missiles!
Some of the fights were truly epic and you got a sense of scale from the shared channels and intel source and some nights there were multi front battles raging the length and breadth of the north. Dek, Venal, Tribute, Vale, the whole place was alive with dead ships and people expecting reinforcements from the results of other fights.
Legends were made. The siege of BKG, the raids of RONA-KIA, the big Raven squadrons of BNC, the use of rotating war decs, the latter stages we (JF) declared war on each of the major PA corps operating in empire to keep up the pressure and when they upgraded to a formal IGA we maintained it for the bargain price of 1m isk per week! (those were the days) So the moment when the final surrender came was very very sweet for all involved.

Aftereffects of the War
In the course of the fighting the following Alliances died.
1. Northern Alliance Security Treaty (NAST) this was the "super alliance" of alliances that Halseth Durn created to unite all the northern powers in a grand NAP before the GNW. It was the first victim of the fighting really because many of its member corps decided that PA was in breach of its rules and declared their intention to eject PA from the association. I don't think it ever came to a formal vote, but the whole thing was dropped and left to die.
2. Unicor was destroyed and partially assimilated by the Pirate Syndicate with many of the unassimilated Unicor fighters joining an independent fighting corp named equilibrium. The Pirate Syndicate itself was later destroyed and partially assimilated by the Forsaken Empire (mk3) who in a strange quirk of fate would eventually die off with their fighters retiring or joining the revivified Biomass Cartel (itself an ancestor of TPS!) The Forsaken Empire name did survive however and the IGA entity of that designation was used to host a union of ex Unicor, ex Curse, ex PA and generally interested corps from the Tribute Region in a mainstream territorial alliance headed by GODS, Millenium and CDI. FE can be considered an successor and continuation of the Unicor alliance in some ways.
3. Coalition of Deklein was pretty much destroyed by the fighting and eventually sued for peace with the PA special ops team GÇ£RONA-KIAGÇ¥ who were consistently the GNWGÇÖs most effective anti alliance fighters of the war. (the remnants of CoD would go onto join the short-lived NSA alliance (Northern Stars Alliance).
4. Fade Union was pretty much destroyed by internal issues and some of its members went onto Band of Brothers, and some of its corps went briefly to the NSA alliance. It was replaced by a soundalike alliance also called Fade Union but this one was full of exiles from the collapse of the Curse Alliance in the far south and was itself destroyed by Band of Brothers.
5. NCA itself (the informal alliance of alliances) was a casualty about 3months into the war because it had become apparent that CoD and Unicor had effectively died off and the PA was scoring kills against the remnants to build up their own morale.
6. The Pirate Syndicate (as mentioned already fell to civil war and arguments about corp thefts and general hassles and left the scene for a long while, many of their best pilots went onto join Band of Brother corps)
7. Curse Alliance (declared its own death and pulled out of the conflict)
8. Northern Stars Alliance (NSA, was formed by the remnants of Cod and FU and Unicor and pursued a policy of neutrality with the PA and supported the settlement of curse exiles as the new FU. This was a disaster because the new FU attacked Band of Brothers and their northern alliances which led NSA swiftly into war with Band of Brothers which lasted about a week before the NSA was utterly crushed.
9. The original Phoenix Alliance. (PA, died about 5months into the conflict when the IGA was disbanded and a majority of the founding corps left Venal for other things GÇô all of the corps I listed earlier as the GÇ£greatsGÇ¥ of the PA left. The heart and soul went from the alliance and all that was left was a shell. Now Cochise of 20th Legion continued fighting with that GÇ£shellGÇ¥ and never surrendered or gave up until the point when he was effectively ousted by this own alliance and went onto form Xelas. He was a courageous and talented leader in truth, but the moment the original PA died was the moment when the IGA folded and everyone formally at war with it received dozens of surrender mails for posterity. That was the date the champagne corks popped and celebrations occurred.

In the course of the fighting the following Alliances were born.
1. Band of Brothers. (Sir Molle of Evolution and Blacklight and Galavet and DB Preacher and others formed Band of Brothers (called something else originally) as a way of uniting the fighters and continuing the war against PA while the soft targets of CoD and Unicor and Fade etc were able to seek a ceasefire with the PA leadership and stay out of it. They had a vision for a pure combat alliance with no fluff or territorial defence duties. The founding of Band of Brothers tore the heart out of NORAD and obliterated NSA while continuing to terrorise and murder the remnants and exiles of the PA and their allies. It was truly a defining moment in Eve and changed the face of warfare forever.)
2. Northern Stars Alliance. (The immediate successors of COD and FU and Unicor who had grown tired of the war with PA and wanted to build an empire in peace. Sadly for them they made the wrong diplomatic choices and didnGÇÖt last long.)
3. Imperium Alliance. (Formed from a melding of Curse Exiles and the economic powerhouse of the exiled RONA and combat power of RONA KIA GÇô they flourished for a while in the west until they tested the power of Band of Brothers months later and submerged forever.)
4. G Alliance. (The German pilots from the PA united with their friends from elsewhere decided to form an alliance a bit like Band of Brothers with discipline and combat smarts. They have been pretty successful.)
5. IRON alliance. (The defeated remnants of the Northern Stars Alliance (NSA) reformed a month or two later as IRON (Imperial Republic of the North) under the twin dictatorship of Buddrow and Destable of Exodus and Venturecorp. They got rid of a lot of non-combatants from their own roster and have generally been an anti-BoB force ever since.)
6. RAZOR Alliance. (Bladerunners and Cutting Edge from the PA formed an alliance in Pureblind to fight enemies of the PA and people they donGÇÖt like. They live in 5zxx and went onto unify with G and IRON.)
7. Mercenary Coalition. (IGÇÖm going add this one since I think Merc Coalition became a proper alliance when North Star Networks/NSN from the PA joined them)
8. Forsaken Empire (mk4). (I've added this, because I think its fair to say the founding of the current FE had quite a lot to do with the history of the GNW. It is in some ways an updated version of Unicor with more unity and fighting power though it certainly occupies the same general areas.)
9. Xelas Alliance. (20th Legion led alliance that Cochise formed after being effectively ousted from the post war PA by the few remaining members of the old guard. Xelas held tenal for a short time then were targetted by the successor PA and NBSI for having the wrong standings
10. NBSI (Not Blue Shoot It) Alliance. Combative neutral shooting alliance merging ex Xetic corporations with some breakaway PA corps that were given tenal by the post Cochise era government in exchange for shooting up Xelas and driving them out)
There are of course many many other changes and births and deaths of small corps and alliances but I think these were the significant ones.
