Ok, so I just started playing the beta last night. So far I cannot see this becoming successful, not because of the bugs or glitches (those will be worked out, hopefully) but because of the gameplay, controls and utterly confusing element regarding skills, upgrades etc etc.
My biggest issue right now is the controls. Pretty much everything about the controls feels wrong, I don't even know where to start.
First off I will point out the weapon selection wheel. Right now you hold R2 and use the right stick to select a weapon, sadly this is contrary to every other game on the PS3 that has weapon wheel selections. it should be this: Bring up weapon wheel, use LEFT stick to highlight weapon, release the weapon wheel button, and get selected weapon. Also note that currently you have to HOLD the right stick in the direction of the weapon upon releasing the weapon wheel button to select that weapon, this is NOT GOOD. Having to hold the stick in that direction is horribly inconvenient. It should be move-and-drop, meaning I simply move the stick in the direction of the weapon I want, release the stick (thus selecting the weapon), and release the weapon wheel button to select it. This is instinctual, natural and what most players are used to. The fact I have to hold the right stick on the weapon, then release the weapon wheel button while still holding the right stick in that direction, is absolutely awful and awkward.
Secondly are the vehicle controls. What were you guys thinking? Practically every other vehicle based game on the PS3 has R2 as acceleration, L2 as brake/reverse, and left stick for steering. You guys have the acceleration, brake, reverse AND steering assigned to the left analog stick?! This needs to be changed to something more natural with what 99.9% of the PS3 gamers are used to. R2 for acceleration, L2 for brake and reverse, and left analog stick for steering. I'm not even going to get into position changing, one fix at a time. However I suggest CCP play some Warhawk to know how vehicles are supposed to be controlled/operated on the PS3.
Thirdly is the control aspect of the game (aiming, moving etc). All I can say is that the aiming/movement is horrendous in so many ways. It is not smooth at all, and is an unnatural struggle to aim and move around. I suggest you guys contact Activision and ask for the source code of the COD controls. Those games may be copy-and-paste redundancies, but one thing they have down PERFECTLY is the feel, movement, and aiming. Dust 514 is very linear in the aiming/control department, and it feels wrong and unnatural. My character doesn't aim where my brain is telling it to aim to, which is a problem. On games with fluid and responsive controls, this is not an issue.
Fourthly is the overall confusing-as-heck upgrade system. I have no idea what the frik is going on, probably would take me several months of experimenting to figure out how the system is setup. As it stands now, whoever has even a remote clue at how to properly do upgrades in this game, will have a HUGE advantage (already present with those who have those dang invulnerable tanks). I suggest that new players are introduced to things slowly, so they can learn how to properly use and purchase items at peak efficiency to their play-style. Giving the player access to everything right at the start is monumentally confusing, things need to be introduced slowly so the player can get a better feel for how to upgrade and what these skills and upgrades do. Perhaps some kind of ranking system could apply, at each rank you get introduced to new items and possibilities. But it is done relatively slowly/incrementally so the player knows what they need to do to play at their best without being utterly overwhelmed by all the options.
I have a lot of other issues with this game, especially TDM matches... but I'll leave that rant for another post.
P.S. Seriously, can somebody PLEASE tell me how to stop the incredibly annoying "Draft Saved" thing from popping up every 3 seconds on this forum? Using NoScript and refusing scripts from dust514.com works, but I have to re-enable it to make a post or click on anything. Not exactly convenient.
But my goodness, every 3 seconds that stupid thing pops up and moves my block of text up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down (I think you get the point). |

well said.. i didnt read it all above, but i got his point with the menu control... i get annoyed with the fitting.. when you edit you have to rotate the left stick to access each slot, its so sensitive and i rarely get to what i wanted 1st or even 2nd time...
just normal left right to simplify the control, or lower the sensitivity so ot rotates slower..
the grenades sometimes take forever to look like your about to throw one, never mind throw one when you need to... its got me killed several times... im sure i pressed it hard enough the 1st time... i've dropped one just a few feet away before now so i know it has various distances.. but sometimes i get nothing and why is it only 2 or 3 grendades capacity? should be at least 5 or 6 i think :)
Upgrading is simple if you can be patient... well, almost :) you cant get everything together unless you battle for 2 weeks to save up points... Just look at what basic skills you were given... see the level 3 & 4 upgrades are expensive, so decide what other skills you may need (not want... just yet) and buy the level 1 & 2 skills for a few essential things.. or just save up and increase what you already are.. the points will fly in later so you can expand your more skills then.. its designed to be a long term game so there wont be any 'completed it in a few days' thing going on anywhere around here.... it looks like a proper game that will be there for you all year, and maybe the next..... plenty of time to adjust to the controls.. or edit your own...
the vehicle controls would be alright if there was a brake somewhere other than the steering stick its a nightmare because the jeeps are fast... and i can't be driving like my gran when im getting shot at... theres so many obstacles for these vehicles when trying to escape..

Thanks for the help.
One quick question, I am looking to try to get myself one of those tanks that I see people drive around and get a 20-0 KDR with, but one thing that has me confused is that for the ~1,600 ISK (or whatever its called) I only get one tank? So each time it is destroyed I have to buy another one?
If true, that is absolutely awful. I am the type of person who when spends money on something, either in real life or a game, I want it to last as long as humanly possible so I can get my monies worth. I will be extremely reluctant to spend most of my money in the game for something that isn't infinitely replaceable, especially when it can probably be lost due to a server glitch or game freeze. Not to mention that if I get taken out in the tank before I can get any use out of it, that will be a massive offense to me because it means I am out all that money. It's bad enough that I get a death by somebody who has some kind of insta-kill Gatling gun and armor like a tank, let alone a loss of something extremely expensive that I paid for. It's a double-whammy add insult to injury, and that aspect of this game I do not enjoy at all. |

ur on,ly seeing like 5% of the whole game, were testing several stuff, like.. now there's only 3 types of vechicles, tanks, LAVS and dropships, on the release there will be over 20 types of vechicles........
People keep posting arround comparing to fully developed games and whatever.
We are testeing set-ups, what needs to be upgraded, what needs to be downgraded, what needs improvement.
IMO, some people should just be banned from these forums since they contributing 3x 0 to its development.
Nobody is forcing you to play this game, if it frustrates you, go play another game and stop filling up these forums with tons of crap and and BS PERIOD.
if you have no interest in assisting in this game's development, then quit the game totaly and wait for its release, just some news for you crybabies,
Very soonish all skillpoints will be reset like it was before you even got 1 kill.
Great huh, you can start all over again.

the losing you investment is part of the expierence it forces you to play more conservativly. or only use your really good stuff for high paying contracts. since we dont have player contracts right now we dont get lots of isk. once its fully released and eve players are paying us a lot more isk we can use more advanced gear regularly. if you play with a squad of players with mics and are coordinated with them you have a betetr chance of living longer and if you dont die you dont lose ur tank or fit. its suppose to be brutal thats similar to how eve online plays.

I disagree. If you use the left joystick to select a weapon/equipment, you can't move while you're selecting it. This would become inconvenient if you're trying to switch weapons on the run because of reload time, or if you are trying to hide from the enemy on the other side of the rock and need your other wep. |

my tank i easily go 30-0 and average 70k sp per game and 220k isk, the gunloggi is fine for me, after two games its paid for itself. played few games today and got around 3 mill isk without a need to replace zhe tank.

considering the fact that this game is supposed to be UNIQUE not a scifi themed Battlefield copy. that tank is Yours not a vanilla server spawn wich means its supposed to matter when your stuff is destroyed. thats the point of EVE and DUST Your decisions MATTER! oh and you get between 70-170k on average for me at least every round. when i do awfull too. |

I'm agree with topic starter... The game is barely playable now. 1. Aim down control sensitivity is to high 2. Weapon (and equipment) change controls are inconvenient. I think it will be better to use "cross" buttons for that, wheel control - for scores, vehicles and etc. Hey, guys, there are several popular FPS games out there - look at theirs control schemas! 3. Lag... Oh my, i think its about 500-700 ms reaction, but I've ping about 110 ms to EVE server . Hope it is just weak server under heavy load... 4. Heavy FPS stuttering, slow texture loading 5. Long load times 6. Vehicles behaviour is very strange and vehicles controls are uncomfortable 7. Economics... infantry equipment is too expensive - you can not cover the expenses with mission rewards.

Most of the time you earn back your suit per game. Once you hit the advance/ proto tier, then no. Paying 30k isk for a suit is far cheaper. My suit already cost almost 150k per suit. Plus, in term of EVE economy, making infantry equipment cheaper means a near infinite supply of suits. |

I think that fact that you loose your stuff is whats sets this game apart it gives consequence to dying after playing this game for 2 months when i go back to play COD and other FPS they seem pointless, spawn die spawn die doesnt matter, but when you have to worry about isk you have to think about your fits and cant always run flashy expensive stuff, you have to save it for when its truly needed.
and to the guy that said about stuff is too expensive, have you checked your assets recently, i have about 20 mil in proto drop suits and tanks i will never use so when the market comes in to existence soon and you will be able to sell things, this will be a good source of income.
going back to the OP i agree with you on the whole thing about you shouldn't have to hold the stick up (but i like the right stick) in the last build i went with tanks and i only ever lost them when i didnt turn on the reppers properly because i didnt hold it, i don't go with tanks anymore because its more fun to blow them up instead of kill whoring,
my advice would be stick with it, cpp are renowned for improving things over time, and a propper tutorial is coming, and read everything, stats are your friend in New Eden

yes this game is different
And as far as it goes with vehicles buy militia and run a simple loadout on them and no it doesnt cost more except for the dropship and maybe the tank.
selling stuff will help with ISK also militia gear anything you dont need to be a high level that will reduce ISK cost per dropsuit it only cost like 20,000 ISK to restock my dropsuit but i made a bunch of militia suit set-ups they are infinite.
I suggest buying militia gear and playing around with that stuff again its infinite

There are many ways to earn money besides PvP in EVE Online - mining, industry, agent running, complex robbery, etc, etc. It seems, Dust 514 don't have other ways to earn money, besides PvP (or aurum buying). So, if you are not good player with low K/D rating - you will use militia equipment most times. As result - you will be even more easy pray for your foes. This is disapointing, you know. F2P games should be very accurate balanced between free and donate aspects of game. |

This game is quite big and I can see that it is going to take a long time to actually master a style of play let alone get together enough ISK to get the loadouts. But my main problem is the skilling up. I think a levelling system would work extremely well and live tutorials too. Does anyone remember FF8 when it explained the magicka system. Please incorporate this into the final game instead of page upon page of Eve/Dust jargon to contend with. |

Ieukoplast wrote:Ok, so I just started playing the beta last night.
1.Right now you hold R2 and use the right stick to select a weapon, sadly this is contrary to every other game on the PS3 that has weapon wheel selections. it should be this: Bring up weapon wheel, use LEFT stick to highlight weapon, release the weapon wheel button, and get selected weapon.
2.Secondly are the vehicle controls.
3.Thirdly is the control aspect of the game (aiming, moving etc).
4.Fourthly is the overall confusing-as-heck upgrade system.
1. umm no. Why would u want to use the LEFT stick to select? so ur forced to stand still when selecting a weapon? sorry but no right stick is fine tbqh
2. ill agree i wasnt a big fan of the vehicle controls but tbqh after learning them they are pretty decent. takes some gettin used to and would like to see more options for ppl who dont wanna learn new setups but for ME i like it.
Reasoning being is that the vehicles in this game u can activate modules on them which is currently set to hold R2 and use right stick to select. The main reason u have the acceleration etc on the left stick is so that u can stay mobile while activating modules. Trust me when i say this u dont want to sit still for a few seconds as a sitting duck while u try and activate ur mods
When im tankin and taking heavy dmg i back up and activate my armor rep at the same time, if i stop to activate it with different controls ill probably die more often.
Practice with the free LAV thats how i got good with it, dont mash the gas when trying to make turns and make sure to also break, light movements on the stick for LAVs is key
3. Agree, the aiming and overall smoothness of the game needs to be worked on to make it feel less clunky, each suit also has a specific turn rate etc. Heavy turns slowest, scout fastest which also has a part to play in how it feels. That suit turn speed part is fine just needs to make it feel not so stiff and movement clunky imo
4. No ranks, sorry cant agree to that. Im sure tutorials will be made but the game is about having freedom of choice, the upgrade system honestly isnt that hard. People just dont like to read and think and like to have their hands held too much. Read the skills, see what u want and SPECIALIZE in a certain role. DO NOT try to put SPs into everything, specialize 1st...branch off after |

Personally, as soon as custom keybinding goes in I'm going to swap melee and select. I've never been a fan of R3 melee, and if you think about it clicking R3 and doing a quick swipe of the stick allows for far faster selection than manipulating two controls. Besides, if you were using a mouse, you'd be selecting with the scroll wheel anyway. Just think of that as a controller version of the same concept. I'd honestly like to see an actionmapper if they can swing it, so that I could do such things as have L3 activate crouching, but have L3 while moving forward activate sprint. |
