And when a target directly beneath the ship don't shoot until the pilot has adjusted the position of the ship so that you don't hit the dropship. Your shots cause the ship to tip and it can **** things u for the pilot |

Sorry for being so negative but why dont you do something useful and cap an objective? I dont want to hear about being a spawn point or testing the density of the air as you pass by. You help no one flying Ms. Daisy around for a duck hunt. |

The most important tip is to be on comms. Your first responsibility is to call out attacks on the ship. Knowing how many vollies of swarms ate headed his way will let the pilot know if he can hang around or if he should bug out.
The next is to take out AA threats. That includes rail and blaster installations. A good pilot will direct you to take those out first so you take control of the airspace. After that you want to take out suits that are directing fire your way. Finally any other targets that show up.
A huge tip is to build a "Fat Suit" to gun with. Fit a heavy with shield extenders and an armor repair unit. You will have small arms fire directed at your position and you could be killed without the ship taking a hit.
Gunning is more than just racking up an embarassingly high KDR. Close air support from a dropship can turn the tide on a fight for an objective. You have a much better angle of fire than your teammates on the ground and you provide a huge distraction to the enemy, allowing your team to take them out. |

The current problem with dropship is that passengers get the kill assist points, which is entirely stupid. It causes players to stay in it, and not drop out to cap points. Honestly, have air supports helps alot, but once you have 4 guys sitting in it just leeching points, that is four guys not on the ground fighting. |

Priorities:
1) look for and inform pilot of threats, targets, etc. This is why you need to be on comms 2) shoot anything that is a threat to the dropship, like people with swarm launchers. 3) support infantry on the ground, i.e.: shoot things that are threats to them. 4) go for any other targets of opportunity
Don't bail out until the pilot says so or until armor and shield are both at exactly 0. A good pilot can get away from threats long enough to repair the damage, and he'll want his gunners to still be there. I have lots of pilots bail out when I'm only halfway into my armor, when I'm flying an armor-tanked dropship and it's kind of annoying. |

Wow, sometimes I wish the forums had a "dislike" button.
No, being able to insert a squad virtually anywhere on the map very quickly isn't helpful at all. Yeah, sure. |

You help no one flying Ms. Daisy around for a duck hunt. In my experience, they are fantastic both as air support at an objective, and to drop behind enemy lines. I've had good luck using a dropship spawn to drop behind enemy lines on top of an unguarded objective. A quick hack, then sprinting off to cover it with sniper fire; works to both peel off some enemies from the front line to go deal with it, and you can nab a few easy kills when they try to hack it back :). |

Helps no one?
Okay... I don't fly dropships and I haven't been a fan of them in the past but that's a ridiculous statement to make. A dropship that has a mobule spawn unit installed in it could be a huge help. Imagine if you were playing on a large map with a lot of objectives that are spread out, that's a lot of traveling to do. Instead of having to spawn at a letter, call in a LAV or whatever, and make your way to that objective you could spawn in a dropship and have it go over the objective so you can jump out and right onto it... also allowing you to easily flank enemies that might be looking over it because you know they're most likely going to be staring at the obvious entrances, not so much the sky.
& You know how people are generally gathered around 1 or 2 objectives while the rest are usually unguarded, easy and quick capping thanks to a dropship.
Now having 3+ people camping inside of one is obviously a bad thing, no reason for people to be wasting their time leeching points via kill assist. That's just lame and selfish, but dropships can help the team quite a bit when used properly. |

I am not a pilot, nor do I have any skills in turrets, or gunner specific skills. I do however LOVE that I can spawn on a drop ship, and if I can man a gun and support the ground crew, then I could care less about my K/D ratio. My number one priority, is to help my team win, even if I don't have a huge kill count.
That being said, I have flown with some great pilots who know to fly me to an area of the map that I can safely drop into and pose the biggest threat to the opposing team. I have also flown with Pilots who hover inches from the ground and just try to run players over. I will say, its not very effective for very long.
When there are points to capture, I usually play my scout drop suit, that is yes equipped with a sniper rifle, but I also have hacking modules in my suit, which let me capture the objectives 20-30% faster. I currently do not have a com (I do have several mics, I just haven't tried to plug them in yet), but I think there are some basic things that everyone should do in their role.
If you are going to be a pilot, your goal should be extraction, and insertion of the troops aboard your ship. If they just want to hang out and soak up kills, it sucks, but at current not much you can do aside from landing the ship and sitting there till they get off. The most successful players I see out there, tend to be very excellent team players, and while they have high K/D ratios, they also tend to support a specific role.
Thats just my .02 ISK

But couldnt a ground pounder do the same thing by throwing a mobile spawn point behind enemy lines? and have that extra person running with the others to overpower and outsmart all others? Why the need for a dedicated flying taxi cab? |

It wouldn't be the same.
When you drop an uplink, that's one set location, there is no picking it up and bringing it somewhere else. While if you can spawn in a dropship, it can move throughout the map quickly, so you can basically spawn anywhere on the map while the drop uplink is one spot.. which is also easy to camp and destroy if seen, and I see those pop up on the radar quite often.
But yes, drop uplinks are good too.
Mobile spawn points ftw. |

I understand the mobility of it. But you seem to forget your ship is not invisible. All the flying around is making you a target for the AV guys and tankers. Plus you have to depend on a randoms flying skill not to crash and burn. Not to mention unless you are on comms. you will be going where the pilot wants to go not where you are needed. There are many negatives to having a flying taxi but I will say with a competent pilot some can be overcome. Still I'd rather have you on the ground capping objectives and killing others.

Teamwork
I understand what you would rather someone do, but I would rather my team use multiple methods instead of sticking to a few. I'd like to have a dropship that people can spawn in, drop uplinks here and there, a few tanks, and a few LAVs on the field, and the rest on foot running a muck on objectives and such.
That way if one method is caught and ruined, it's no big deal, choose another, adapt and overcome. Of course dropships aren't invisible, I've shot down many with swarm launchers, but they are still very good at dropping off teammates at objectives from the sky. |

When the dropship makes different movements it throws of the missile launchers accuracy. When the pilot is driving at a smooth rate the missile launchers accuracy is great. That's why it usually sucks being the gunner for guys who pilot those things around like maniacs. |

I'm guessing you haven't been around good dropship pilots from last patch.
With a team on voice, a dropship can take a squad to a destination, have its two gunners kill people there faster than an infantry could, and drop that squad off to cap and defend an objective. When it's time to move on, they can be picked up and moved to another cap point and repeat the process. Any dead could also spawn in the ship, ready to deploy at the next objective.
Last patch my prototype small missile launchers would 1-shot many players, and 2-3 shot proto suits if they were good hits.
This patch, however, there are many issues regarding dropships and swarm launchers that make them much less effective.
I agree though, people on the ground actually capping are needed. But there are just as many KDR oriented players who can't be bothered to defend a cap as there are snipers or "gunners" etc as well. |

you sure about that? the 20+ kills per gunner and instant transport for team mates to objectives seems pretty useful. |
