This thread is for all my fellow dropship pilots out there.
I'm just curious if anyone else experiences this, but I literally lose more dropships to being flung upside down (and surviving) but not being able to flip the dropship right side up again. This wouldn't be as much of an issue if swarm launchers didn't periodically force you to go completely vertical and plummet to the ground, or even flip you completely over. I'm all for making impacts screw up your flight pattern, but this is just kind of lame >_<
Really though, I'm just wondering if I'm just wicked unlucky on this front, or if this is a common occurrence with the other few of you. |

DS pilot here.
Loss of orientation is the biggest threat to you dropship. So much so that it's actually going to be toned down in the next patch.
Anyway, here's what you do.
1) Keep some altitude. Never be less than 25m from anything you can slam into unless you're absolutely sure the area is AA free. Which...you can't ever be. So don't be near the ground, or buildings, or hills, or any of that.
2) As soon as you get hit by something release the thrust. Don't push L1 again until you've righted yourself. |

I got flipped upside down once and when I couldn't right the ship I hit L2 thinking that my upside down ship would rise. It didn't work |

Even if you're put so you're facing straight down? If so, that could explain a lot, because I always jam L1 and try to right myself. Thanks for this tip, will use it right away.
Also, you sure it's being toned down next patch? If so, I'm never going to die |

Maybe, this can help. Helicopter flight. Or maybe devs can look it up. |

Getting hit with two consecutive rounds of swarms toss me on my head... and I die. Yes, very much like a turtle flipped on its shell. Here's hoping they add the pilot suite with good mods in the next build so we can rule the skies again. |

if you find yourself upside down, roll upright rather than pull or push on the nose. Rolling is the fastest way to recover.
If you are mostly upside down and already rolling that way, keep going rather than try to stop the roll and return the same way.
Once you are nearly upright, RETURN THE CONTROLS TO NEUTRAL!
Over controling wiil set up what is called "Pilot Induced Occilations", something that every real student pilot needs to learn to overcome. It typically arrises during a landing. The student is decending too fast so he pulls up, and doesn't stop soon enough. Now he's hiigh and slow, so he pushes down, only to be going too fast now, so he pulls up again. Pictured a waveform that increases in amplitude until it impacts the runway.
The solution is to neutralize the controls AS SOON AS the bad stuff stops happening. it takes concious thought the first few times and will then migrate to automatic.
This is probably a huge factor in landing mishaps for new dropship pilots. This is important enough to add to the first lesson post in my thread. |

Well if none of these other tips help and u manage to crash land ur dropship upside down and it doesn't explode hop out and repair it (this is hoping u were smart enough to bring a repair gun) then assess the situation. If ur in enemy territory clear the surrounding area if u can if not abandon the ship. Once the area is clear u can try to right the ship using a wedge. Wats that you say? Where do I find a wedge big enough to move a 1+ton dropship? Well everyone has a free infinite use wedge in there back pocket, its called an LAV. Thats right take ur free LAV and ram it into ur dropship. The first time it may take a while and ull have to get out and repair ur dropship and LAV multiple times. Its a lot easier with buildings or hills to stabilize ur dropship but sometimes tht luxury is not available. It takes practice but I have gotten to the point of it working in one ta two tries. Hope tht helps. |

I've actually found you can pretty decently compensate for swarm 'push' if you've got decent gunners spotting swarms. Just start angling thedropship so they hit you in the direction you want to go. Or start angling to so that they hit you in in the rear instead of the side, and they'll just push you up. It's not 100% foolproof but if you pre-empt the impact movement, it's much less drastic.
But I have experienced this too. Dropships at full burn on their side doing nothing instead of doing badass donut burnouts!
The only way to flip back over is to try cycling in/out of your map or having your squad ram it with an LAV. |
