From the Merc Quarters screen: Start > Fitting > Dropsuit Fitting You will have a default listing of Starting Fit Dropsuits: Scout - Recon; Assault - Frontline; Heavy - Shock; Logistics - Triage
I would keep these as is and just Create New, that way no matter how jacked up you make your experiments, you can always delete and start fresh with your defaults.
Anyway, to change a fitting you select a fitting from the list, Confirm (X), then you get your fitting screen. You should see a default sub-menu of Edit, Restock, Select as Default, etc. Choose edit. Using the PS3 controller, pull and rotate your left analog stick to circle around the grid (like Street Fighter's dragon punch.. sorta?). You should see a thin curved highlight following your analog stick motion on the grid circle. As this highlight passes over the various module slots, you should hear a piercing chisel sound that I can only describe as Yar's Revenge pecking, if you know your Atari 2600 references. Stop your analog motion on one of these module slots (i.e., your gun slot), click X, and you should find a list of replacable gear, if you have anything available. Scroll through until you find want you want to replace it with, confirm with the X, and voila.
Problems you WILL run into: Each Dropsuit has a unique Power Grid (PG) and CPU cap that are represented by the large curved orange-ish lines left and right of your character's suit avatar. Each module you use requires a preset amount of each. If you create a combination of modules/weapons that require MORE PG or CPU than your suit provides, you will receive an Invalid Fit red popup. Adjust as needed. You can see the PG and CPU caps at the bottom of each of those orange-ish curves. You will also see your current fitting requirements. It should look like a fraction: 123/150 means I am currently using 123 CPU out of a max 150. In this case, my fitting is good and I can move on. If that fitting showed a CPU of say 151/150 then the Invalid Fitting will display and I would need to adjust. Same goes for the PG. As you scroll through your replacable items, you can see the affect of PG and CPU in the stats listing to the right of your screen.
That's the jist of it. You can train skill to boost CPU/PG caps, to lessen specific equipment pull on CPU/PG, and you can even train to equip specific modules that boost your max CPU/PG. Some more expensive gear may even require less CPU/PG than entry level gear in that you're upgrading for efficiency. It's fairly organic and this path really depends on how you want to play the game. Just know you're not limited. What I mean is, once you start a path, you continue to train other paths whenever you want. Just, it helps to try to plan it out so you're not wasting too much time. I ramble.
A warning for new gear purchases: From the Market screen, be sure to look at the skill requirements. If you see a big red "X" in the Sub-machine Gun market listing, that means you do NOT currently have the skills to use this item. Highlight the weapon of choice, hit the ^ key to see its specs/details, and use the L2/R2 to cycle through until you find the Prerequisite lists. This will tell you what skill and what LEVEL you must have to use this. If you have bought something already but do not have the skills to use it, that item will be highlighted in RED from your Dropsuit Fitting screen described earlier.
A side note: If you create a new fitting with gear/modules you have purchased NOT MILITIA GRADE, then you will need to keep these items restocked. For example, if you buy a basic Scout Suit, a cool sub-machine gun (SMG), and a Breach Sniper Rifle, and only one of each? When you die in game wearing that fitting, you just lost it. Default suits will always be there waiting for you currently, but if you play with a custom fitting, you lose those items when you die. Always keep multiple stocks. From the Fitting menu, you will see an option to Restock. That's what this is for.
Skills: Found a gun you want to use but no skills to use it? Buy the prereq skill book from the Market, return to your Character > Skills screen > R2 to show ALL SKILLS. Scroll down this list to find the skill you just bought that should be slightly grayed out and choose to inject/train. I forget the menu options. Once injected, this skill is now part of your clone. You will need to manually train it now, assuming you have enough skill points to train it. Get it to the level required by whatever gun you want, and return to Fitting to get that toy moving.
Maybe a bit too much info, but eh.... Good luck with it!
