This is not really a suggestion for the game itself, but for how we are enabled to take part in the beta.
Little backstory: My internet connection is not the greatest. It is stable and all, and I am able to play online without major problems usually, but it takes upwards of 12-18h to download 2GB of data (depending on circumstances, like me using the internet at the same time to post on forums). While this is usually also not a problem, there is more: my connection resets every night at about 2:30AM.
Downloads from the store don't have a problem with that. They resume automatically. Patches however don't. They give me an error message and the system immediately forgets that it has already downloaded loads of data.
So...I got a code to download the beta client. I started the download sometime Saturday before noon. Circumstances were less than ideal, so the download wasn't finished till sometime Sunday morning, while I was sleeping. I started the game after waking up and it immediately needed to download a patch bigger than the game itself. Patching failed, because I started the download not early enough, I started it again and when it was finished eventually, I was at last able to create a character and then look at the shiny message telling me that I don't have access to the beta anymore.
And even if I got a new code, it would probably too expire, before I finished downloading and patching it...
So...two suggestions:
1. Put the updated game in the store. It is strange that I have to download a patch for a game that I have just downloaded. Especially if the patch is bigger than the game itself.
2. Put an option into the client that allows us to update it with a new code, so that we don't have to download and patch the complete thing over and over again.
Little sidestory: I had a very similar experience with EVE a couple of days earlier. Everyone was talking about how great Guild Wars 2 is, and I did the most sensible thing and decided to finally try EVE. I wanted to do so for quite some time and figured now would be the perfect time. So I fired up Steam, downloaded the trial and (a day later) started the game and created a trial account. Immediately I had to download a patch, 2.something GB....
The remaining days of my trial period are slowly ticking away, and I still haven't downloaded the patch...I just don't think the game is worth the bother (it might be, but I probably will never know). |
