AUR, since its apparently going to be used for things that are more than cosmetic, is a slippery slope. I am sure they will rake in the money this way though (i.e. the guy who spent $100 on AUR proto guns and those that defend that) Anybody else think AUR could possibly spoil what could be a great game? I hope CCP is very careful with what can be purchased with real money. |

I hear a lot of people say AUR unbalances things but I just don't see it. From my own memory, AUR items do nothing more than reduce PG/CPU usage. If CCP releases the mega-awesome-destroy all-destructo-death ray-IMMA FIREN MAH LAZER- ultimate weapon for AUR users only, I will support you until the end, but right now I'm impartial. |

I support the opinion. I wouldn't want a kido with $$$ to buy himself a position. Also, that kido when dies, enriches us all, doesn't he? |

AUR can be used for side-grades and cosmetic. The only is making sure that the side-grades are actual side-grades, and not upgrades.
Not as many people are willing to pay for cosmetic items, but a whole lot more are willing to pay for side-grade items.
Additionally, having this type of business model will extend the life of DUST and help insure income. With the additional income CCP can continue adding features well into the future. A $60 release would reduce the amount of players willing to try DUST and would force CCP to come out with expensive DLC after release. The only way to support a game like this is to have a subscription fee (i.e. EVE) or have a side-grade/ cosmetic model.
CCP is making the right decision. |

Deffinately agree but the current system doesn't seem all that bad. I bought the merc pack when it went on sale and still haven't spent a dime of it. Even if you could spend real money on proto gear all day you still have to play the game to earn the SP necessary to equip it. As a newer player I can honestly say that it seems pointles to me to even bother buying Aur untill you get a good start on padding those skills. |

I love where dust is going as a game. Also a huge eve fan. The Aurum and Plex debate is an ongoing issue with the community
As much as I love these two games I don't have time to play them the way I would if: I were single, I lived in a college dorm, I didn't have a full time career, etc
But when I do have time to play, I want to compete. I want to be valid.
So, side grades, skill boosts and other pay options are appealing to me. I may not have the hours to grind for good fitting skills or that next level weapon but if I put Aurum gear on the line I stand a little bit closer to the guys that do have that time.
No one can honestly say that there is Aurum gear that is overpowered when compared to isk gear...competitive? Yes. Aurum gear can take you to the next level that grinding and time would otherwise achieve.
That's why I love the option. I don't have to justify another $15/mo but if I choose to I can step one small rung up the ladder for a price

I dont think that a subscription model is appropriate for a shooter, since all you do is . . . well . . . shoot. . . Plus one more thing: We need a ton of users for this game to make a good impact in the EvE online universe, or else two to three corps will reign all and everything from the shooter side. . . Eve survives with its hardcore fanbase but Dust . . . I really cannot see how it would work in a beneficial way. Also you would have to pay twice if you're playing EvE and Dust, which might be a "bit" expensive. |

Thanks everyone for responding with polite, informative opinions, I agree that a steady flow of income will give CCP the resources to take Dust further. The thing that sticks out for me would be the fact that cosmetic items would not bring in as much money as items that had some sort of bonus applicable to gameplay. So items that give gameplay bonuses clearly the more lucrative business model. That the bonuses would be small is an almost irrelevant fact if you are defining pay 2 win. Just a little pay 2 win in an ever-evolving universe makes the jaded side of me worry about evolution towards a.more substantially p2w and more profitable universe. |

Everyone is right when they say Aurum purchases don't give you a huge advantage when you compare stats on the ISK items respectively. Nonetheless, Aurum gives you an enormous advantage if you consider the cost of items and that a person might have to choose how to specialize (i.e. can't afford a tank and 50 guns so the tank gets forfeited) if they can't afford everything on their shopping list. I am one of these people, when my favorite gun runs low and I've spent all my money on a skill book I just throw aurum at the problem to have both by getting a sidegrade aurum variant of my gun. I think Jin Robot has a point still. |

I see zero problem with AUR gear. Once there's a player market, we'll be able to buy it with ISK, and besides, there's a special place in my heart for taking down someone's AUR kitted fittings with my militia gear. Sweet sweet real money tears are the sweetest of the sweet. |

AUR will unbalance things a little. But it'll pay for the game too. CCP will listen carefully to feedback in this regard. I'll probably not get more than 400 AUR now and again though. AUR does mean that some lvl 5 skills won't be needed by the look of things. But then you have to KEEP paying :D |

See, this is why micro transactions are so great for modern massive online games! Posts #11 & 12 above are completely opposite opinions by two players. One would rather pay regularly to play and the other adamantly would opt to pay nothing to play
With dust you both get what you want and CCP gets two more regular players
Keep increasing the options. There isn't any one right way to do this. Good stuff |

CCP is has been doing this in EVE for what 2+ years now, its not a big deal really. I can see how it COULD be if they do decide to allow AUR to buy weapons or Vehicles that are superior to what can be bought by ISK, but so far CCP has not gone that route in EVE, so I dont see them doing it in DUST either.
Now if CCP REALLY wanted to make some bucks, and have a huge player base for DUST, then they should turn the planets into open worlds, and allow players to freely roam the planets as well, and do planetary mining, tradeing, ratting, pvp and all that. So you would have a console, planetary version of EVE, then still have the 2 games interact with one another. (just my opinion though) |

With the disconnects and the frequency that I die, I personally wouldn't spend AUR for ingame items. But I would like to support CCP with some contribution. I'd probably use it on skill boosters.
But I don't think the game would have a lasting impact if it was a subscription or $60 title. This game needs a constant supply of fresh meat in order to survive. $60 titles come and go with maybe a couple expansion packs then move on to the next title. Subscriptions stagnate and eventually reach a plateau with only the die-hards left.
Giving the game for free while dangling a carrot is interesting. You can't give too much away that your company can't survive, but you can't put the carrot so high you lose your base. Besides this also leaves the option to corporate sponsorship. Sony can get bragging rights to an ongoing dynamic game. And Mercs working for corporations opens itself to the possibility of advertisements that pay for development and maintenance. (Redbull Proto suits)
As long as AUR isn't a requirement, I am willing to see how this develops. Sort of a donation-ware game. |

Gonna argue against the current implementation of AUR guns here for the hell of it
If you equipped a top-tier AUR gun with reduced fitting requirements, one that did the same damage as the isk variant but took up half as much CPU/PG, that's a huge chunk of extra fitting points that you can use to cram in a shield extender or whatever that would have been impossible to do with the isk assault rifle. And that's just from one gun.
Add on all the other modules with hugely reduced fitting requirements and no performance penalty, and you can come up with crazy fittings. Fittings that are flat-out impossible to replicate with isk modules.
CCP's defense of them is that the lowered fitting requirements are just there to make it easier for players with low skills and some cash to burn to do things, just convenience and nothing more. But there's nothing in place to prevent a player with maxed skills from using these modules to create uber-fittings without having to use any "lower tier" modules due to running out of fitting space.
All other things being equal - player skill, tactics, etc - wouldn't a team fitted entirely with these AUR-enabled fittings win against a team that only had the top-tier ISK modules, and had to make sacrifices running out of cpu/pg?
I've got no real problem with the lower skill requirement type of AUR item. They're ultimately no better than the isk version for people who have the skills to use the "normal" gun, and players who buy it for an early upgrade are still missing several levels worth of passive bonuses for the gun. |
