Ok everybody is mentioning little details of what will be going on with the maps etc. IGÇÖm going to try summing up as much as I understand of CCPGÇÖs plans here.
First, these are small battlefields, CCP has been talking about 5km maps, and if you look at the overview map when in battle it extends far into the red zones, so expect more on this front. Also to be noted that all the battlefield assets, such as CRUGÇÖs, turrets and supply depots will be paid for and placed by the force commanders, rather than being placed at fixed points as they are now. Now, battlefields are set around a Facility, the pretty buildings we are fighting in and around, and these will also eventually be bought and placed by the defending corporation. Each has a specific function and will likely become far more important to the players when this level of the game is introduced.
Above Facilities are Districts, these will contain a number of facilities (in the CCP presentation, the example had 6) of various sizes, not unlike slots and modules in vehicles and suits (in said example, the district had 1 large, 2 medium and 3 small slots). I assume that the large facilities will be the PI. Facilities, with the medium and small slots containing support installations. PI. Facilities are likely to be those found in Eve, so; command centres, extractors, industrial facilities, high-tech industry, silo complexes, spaceports and space elevators, again all bought by players (at least outside HiSec). The support facilities could be many things, such as; communication or monitoring arrays, defence systems, power generators. I am sure there are many other examples (IGÇÖm hoping Trans-Atmospheric weapons are medium slot facilities).
Each Planet will have multiple Districts (between 15 and 20 are numbers that have been mentioned) so planetary assaults are going to be quite an undertaking, with forces having to take out multiple facilities for each district and multiple districts to take a planet (using numbers given above thatGÇÖs around 90 to 120 battlefields per planet!). From what I gather terrain is randomly generated and as said, skins can then be added to this to change time of day, season, planet type etc., hopefully giving them a potential for a great deal of variation. Although were starting with Temperate planets only at first, CCP does want to release more in the future. The various categories of planets within Eve and potentially to be released in Dust are;
Gas, Yes weGÇÖre talking Bespin here, floating facilities, and no ground surface, airborne assaults, dropships a necessity, ground vehicles next to useless.
Barren, Your basic lump of rock, this could also represent moons and asteroids. Not much different from temperate worlds, just no plants, or atmosphere.
Temperate, We live on one people, every terrain or ecosystem itGÇÖs possible to find on this Dust ball of ours.
Lava, These are dangerous, hostile and unpredictable environments, with extreme heat and frequent seismic and volcanic activity, glass deserts, magma lakes and pyroclastic flows. Not nice places when all is said and done.
Storm, I believe Venus may fall into this category; these worlds may have bad light and visibility due to heavy cloud cover, heavy rain and extreme lightning bursts. Flight becomes risky and even ground forces may be affected by atmospheric interference to their equipment.
Ice, Enceladus, Europa and Hoth fall into this category, cold frozen worlds. They would have a lot of ice, causing low friction and reflective surfaces as well as snow blindness. Much of these surfaces could be riven with dangerous ravines and crevices as well as blizzards being a constant hazard across the planet. These would be potential dangers for heavy ground vehicles as well as reducing visability for all forces.
Oceanic, These would also have a potential for storms, with facilities possibly split between rigs and pontoons on the surface. Requiring Dropships and amphibious vehicles (LAVs?), and ocean bed facilities, where water pressure and lack of light become a concern, but dropsuits, and likely HAVs are probably pressurised.
Plasma, High temperature environments likely prone to extreme storms and Electro-magnetic interference, Crematoria seems a likely example of this sort of world. Generally these places probably closely resemble various visions of hell.
Shattered Very odd worlds, IGÇÖm not sure where they may go with these. Potential here for variable gravity and a very high likelihood of extreme seismic activity, this could also be where the floating mountains of Pandora could logically exist?
In Eve there are a huge amount of planets, and even with only temperate planets on release, there will be a massive amount of land to fight over. Here is a table of planetary numbers to illustrate this;
Type HiSec LoSec NullSec W-Space Total Gas 3042 1783 8485 6372 19682 Barren 3252 1712 8070 6101 19135 Temperate 1222 607 2929 2242 7000 Lava 916 570 2830 2089 6405 Storm 772 499 2320 1796 5337 Ice 482 289 1391 1072 3234 Oceanic 459 284 1259 933 2935 Plasma 247 148 620 474 1489 Shattered 0 1 6 2 9
Using these with the examples from before gives us between 630,000 and 840,000 battlefields at releaseGǪ
Which we all have to admit is a mind boggling amount.
