Hey guys I'm Soleire, after the last reset I decided to try out various heavy and anti-tank builds I've had a whole lot more success at exploding tanks than the forums seem to suggest I should. I played Logistics and some tanks and dropship prior to the reset back when they were dirt cheap. I've managed to kill quite a few tanks so far (yes even STBs who I must say seem to have some pretty powerful fittings.) From what I've read around here it sounds like tanks are unkillable lest your whole squad specs and fits for AT duty. That's a lie. I've killed tanks sometimes single-handedly, sometimes with group but never by charging at them. You have to be smart about it. I don't use any special grenades for the simple reason that I haven't had the extra skill points for them nor do I use any AUR gear (save for my white heavy suit that I bought a single copy of just to look awesome in the war barge.
I don't believe I'm a particularly good player, I haden't played modern fps before EVE because I simply didn't enjoy them. I'm not doing anything special or praiseworthy so I'll just write down the easiest ways to turn tanks into shrapnel.
Turrets, it seems like they're often overlooked and mostly use for the 100 points they provide when capped and cheap infantry kills but most turrets will bring on massive damage on tanks and a lot of tank drivers seem to be oblivious to them until you start firing at them.
Forge Gun This is the most damaging option but also the one that requires the most skill, lining up shots at a distance and figuring out your top range can be a *****. While the Assault variant seems like the obvious choice at first with its 2.5s charge time, it forces you to engage at close range which is a quick way to die. the Breach variant hits for 1.5k but has the penalty to make you immobile while charging or holding a charge, it also takes a ridiculous 6 seconds to charge, this is your weapon of choice. Get a friendly pilot to drop you on a rooftop along with some ammo pack and you can spend a whole game up there wrecking tanks or at the very least forcing them to retreat from an area. One of the shortcommings of this weapon is its nerfed range, oftentime tanks will backtrack just out of your range and start firing at you, there's nothing you can do against that and you should disengage. There's also no way to know how far your forge guns shoots so trial and error are your friends. Another tactic which I love with the forge gun is to way behind a building, charge up, get my scout buddy to run across a street luring a tank after him and then to fire at its side charge up again and fire once more. this will send most tank drivers into survival mode and they'll likely try to run away from you, if they do, line up for another shot and that might do it. Tanks usually take between 2 and 5 shots from the Breach Forge Gun some guy with awesome shield repper holds the current record with taking in 7 shots before going Boom.
Swarm Launchers I both love and hate this weapon I mostly just hate it because just before I started making this post someone wrecked my Viper (3k hp) with a single Militia Swarm Launcher Salvo (600 damage) probably hit my weakspot or somesuch. The one you want is the Regular Swarm Launcher its pretty cheap at 5.2k isk and a giant upgrade over the militia one with its ability to hold in 4 Swarms. Rooftops are also your friend with this one, it has a huge tracking range and you can shot vehicules half the map away with little worry of getting caught. If you haven't figured it out yet this shouldn't be used with the heavy, yeah that starting fit is just stupid. Fit it with any other suit type along with nanohives and your set. otherwise with 6 salvos you'll be stuck hunting dropships and LAVs. I particularly like to use it with a Logistics suit along with both nanohives and Drop Uplinks so I can respawn somewhere usefull (WARNING this will leave you defenseless so learn to cook grenades). Once you lock in step outside the viewrange of the tank and fire aiming up, this will make it a bit harder for the tank to spot you, rince and repeat, if the tank is far away enough, you can sometimes fire all 4 swarm salvos before the first one hits allowing you to relocate. Snipers are your ennemy here and sadly there's nothing you can do about them, try and spot them first and get your team mates to handle them for you, thats your best chance else relocate.
Dropsuit Fittings
There's no secret recipe here. I find the most useful modules to fit are the armor repair and damage booster, increasing shields, shield regen and armor seem pointless as most tank will one shot you unless you're heavy in which case they'll two shot you...
OMG I just joined this game and there's 5 tanks camping our spawn surely there's nothing to do but ragequit! This is the worst case scenario and while it does suck and seems unfair, think of it this way, the ennemy has put a few million isks on the field why not rob them of a few. If your team uses comm, get everyone to switch to swarms and call out targets. You'll lose the match but can still win one the economical front and trust me, they will be pissed beyond reason. Its also lotsa fun.
Anyhow this is it, if anyone finds any use in this then its all for the better, I long to see my precious forums free of tank whine once more. |

I've yet to try them AV nades but I must say you tempt me AIShadow.
Kyy Seska, snipers are easy to deal with, just deny LoS and signal them, you can take a shot from most snipers so if you do get hit jiggle away from the sides and hide behind cover until you regenerate. I don't know wether I'd be contributing more cappin' and killin' on the ground floor but it feels like taking out tanks is the best way to allow my team mates to do just that. And as for ISK/SP gain, sure I could make more, but making the enemy loose theirs is so much better! As for getting a whole team to switch to swarm, it is still on my to do list but I've gotten my 3 squadies to do it and we managed to wreck 3 tanks in under a minute plus lots of boom were had. |
