Nothing is better than using remote explosives to topple a building full of enemies, or breaking through a wall with a missile to get a clear shot at your hiding foe.
Destructible buildings is a must. In all shapes and sizes. Some fully collapsible, some partially. Maybe even some rocks and if you want to be the top with it, add terraforming with weapons. When a tank round hits the ground of a running enemy, the crater left beneath their feet slows them down for the second shot and possibly even knocks them down......if you do add a prone stance for players, another nice feature would be knockdown from explosive effects. |

With what money??? They don't have enough to exactly throw it around. I think part of the reason they went with Unreal Engine was one is cost. Two is adaptability, Carbon probably would have been slightly tricky to use as the overall engine for a shooter on PS3 or Xbox, not that the second matters. It's being used for EvE and the character creator anyways. They're still working on moving Carbon code in areas to replace the old code. Some of which is still from the original EvE when they hammered it out in Python, sweat, blood, tears and who knows what else. |

that comment is kinda unfair. anyone who knows the unreal engine also knows that it can support destructable terrain and structures. however, with that said. if they were to employ this function, we would have much smaller map and matches. it takes a lot of memory to have that kinda thing in place. yes, it would be cool, and yes it would be quite a smile evoker as a result of mass death in short time :P but.....the game would be much smaller. and the whole point in this game is to have a big number of representative from different corps raping the crap out of each other on the battlefield.
who knows, CCP are pretty descent are bring up new tech, as mentioned before with the CARBON dudes. and it may well be implimented in the future. but i seriously doubt it will be on the PS3. the ps3 is a good console but its biggest drawback since day 1 has been the lack of memory the console has available to bring the best from the hardware.
but....should DUST514 be a next gen thing aswell at some point....i would love to see what CCP can do with Destructible assets in the game. i have a lot of faith that they could give the frostbite engine a good piece of competition. |

+1, however this is something that is a long way down the road Im sure. If Dust succeeds then in several years it probrably will not be the game it is at release. Just like Eve today is not the eve of yesterday. |

From what has been said above some people think they know about the Unreal engine and what it can do and can not do. Anyone know if the Unreal engine will support craters after explosions, or a knockdown effect from explosions?

This would be cool, but I can accept if it isn't a priority. Also, as DUST mercs our jobs will be to capture the facilities intact. Collateral damage to your fellow clones is acceptable, to the multi-million ISK processing center or plantetary command center, probably less so.
Still, this was one of my favorite things about Bad Company 2; hiding in a building and the a tank reigns death and destruction upon it with you still in it . . . wicked. |

Apologies :P
still, the unreal engine can do it :) the console however......can only do it if the whole grand scale of dust wasnt so grand.
and to the person who asked about craters. yes, the unreal engine can do it. it can do particle fracturing (kinda like DMM and i guess in a way close to frostbite standard) and it can do terrain deformation. so, it might well be in the scope for the future itterations of Dust514 as they add more and more to it. as it is on the ps3 just now, im not holding my breath. but for the next sony console (should they of course support that console for this service) ..... i dont see a reason why not :D |
