Tried searching this, but there was no "single thread" regarding this so I'm starting a new one.
What I was doing:
Exited a match, don't remember if it was won or lost, and during the SP/ISK count I hit X for my K/D ratio. Almost immediately after I decided I don't want to look at them and hit Square-button to be returned to MQ.
What happened:
I got to see the control guide screen briefly, then the screen went black/grey and PS3 locked up. It was totally unresponsive and I waited for 10-15 mintues, holding the front I/O-button didn't do anything and after removing USB-controller and plugging it back, even that failed wake up.
Only way I got out was hard reset with power-button on the back of the machine. Which pains me and resulted in hard drive checks for corrupt files. |

The PS3 won't brick from a corrupted harddrive. But the harddrive may be irreversibly corrupted. It is very rare, but then again I haven't heard of any installation causing this many catastrophic freezes. I'm using that word, as people tend to think that hard freezes are the ones that CAN be fixed by holding the power on button for 3 seconds.
At this rate I give it a week at most, before you have someone complaining that their PS3 needed a HDD format. This is why I'm no longer testing DUST for the time being, I do not want to be that one.

This exact thing happened to me last night as well.
I've had drops and freezes before but never a ps3 lock up.
My circumstances were the same as yours, but when the unit went to the black screen, the ps3 made a little chirping noise like it was resetting. |
