If you aren't from Eve Online, then it's hard to see just where it is you are fighting. Right now, we're just seeing a few static maps, with a half-dozen variations of color and atmosphere.
But this is where we are: Eve Planets
Each planet has a unique terrain map. There are 7200 Terran-class planets in Eve Online. Even with the limits that reality imposes on terrain generation for FPS games to make maps playable, we'll be looking at a universe of variety in the full game.
Shorelines, mountains, plains, and valleys. Deserts and Jungles. Islands and badlands. Variations of color, weather, and vegetation. Night and day.
Add to that the variations for industry (basically, the buildings will be buildable by corporations, not just emplacements), and we'll have no cause to complain about the map engine.
And that's just the start. There are 7 other classes of planets in Eve online, six of which have mining installations on them, which means something for Dust Bunnies to fight over:
Eve Wiki: Planets
This isn't what's coming (except for the industry thing, that's coming) this is what IS. This is on Singularity and Tranquility right now. Dust is in this universe. As soon as CCP lights a cyno jump point for our warbarge, we're off and running. |

Yeah, I think for people not coming from EVE, it's a little hard to understand the scope of this EVE/DUST thing. Of course right now, you can't really see and appreciate the scale from DUST, other than the star map, which has no real use yet. |

In future the starmap could be used for quite many things such as looking info of battles/ transferring yourself and items around by making hauling contracts to NPC/EVE players(this is just my thought, no fact behind this), etc. |

are there planets in EVE where the pilots came from...as in a Caldari home planet or solar system, Gallente home world or solar system? Basically planets with civilizations...
I know I have seen some videos about EVE and assume that the population of New Edan started out by coming through the wormhole and populating the new galaxy and then the hole closed up and connection to the Milky Way was lost. I assume they landed their ships and started civilizations on planets.
I guess my point/question is: what are the chances we will fight in a futuristic city scape? |

There are 4 capital planets, one for each race. These are the heart of each empire. They have cities, but I doubt we'll ever fight there. Then there are the high-security planets, within the sphere of the four empires. These planets are highly populated. Certainly there are cities on them: you can see them from space.
Towards the frontier, there are low-security areas. These are border systems near the edge of the empires. Some of these would have cities, but these worlds are less populated.
Beyond the four empires is the domain of the eve pilots: Null-security space or 0.0 (security is rated on a scale from 1.0 -safe- to 0.0 -unregulated-. These areas are made up of Eve Player alliances, with little NPC presence beyond pirates. Right now, it's fairly safe to say that cities in 0.0 space are rare. |

thank you Klivve
Since we are starting out in high sec/1.0 space where do you envision our battles taking place. I assume the capital planets are very secure and agree that no fighting will take place on them. However, do you see it possible for us to fight on some of the other semi-populated planets in high sec? |

According to what I've read, the quickbattles and quickskirmishes will all be in hi-sec, since those planets can't change hands and land can't be owned.
At first release or soon after, low-sec "faction warfare" battles will be in the game, allowing battles for "occupation" of low-sec planets on behalf of the empires.
Then, soon(tm) after that, we'll get the null-sec battles, where dust corporations can claim territory for themselves and their Eve corp allies. |

Of course there are home planets, but I doubt we'll be fighting there. Fighting in cities is possible, though. |

Good thread, deserves a bump.
I agree with the current Dust build its impossible to see just how big CCP's plans are for Dust, but as a retired capsuleer I have a pretty good idea how big EVE is and look forward to Dust reaching a similar size and scope. |
