GNN will categorize alliances on a generalized basis, fitting the above basic descriptions.
Confederacy: A confederacy is a corporation established which gives all collective parties equal say in their governance. Each specific group may have their own ideals and their own emphasis, but as a whole the Confederacy is united by their desire to accept people's diversity.
Federal Union: A union is a corporation established which functions essentially as a top-down Republic, with functionaries carrying specific power and the ability to check the head, or leading clan / guild. The Union is united primarily by its dedication towards a broad set of perspectives, carried together under the guise of either a democratically elected or rightfully chosen (based on skill) leading organization / clan.
The Empire: An Empire is a corporation established which functions basically as a military dictatorship. All corporate structures are defined by a singular identity, typically a leading clan or individual. The Empires are unique in their ability to direct resources toward one end; not requiring approval from various constituents; and this is the sole source of their power.
Loose Alliance: A loose alliance is an informal agreement between two organizations. Typically if an Alliance cannot fit the above definitions, it is categorized as a loose alliance.
This should not suggest these are the only categorizations; but this gives a general idea as to how some may end up developing. |

Totally agree, I guess we shouldn't make it come off that way.
It is good however to have general knowledge about how certain organizations are setup. If you'll notice the list I gave isn't much different than you'd get taught in a sociological, government, or history class:
1) They are basic setups of government that have existed in history (Such as the Roman Empire, the Confederate United States [though that is a bad example since I said they accept diversity], the Federal United States, and loose federations such as the United Nations)
2) They are general enough to the point that people can basically understand how the alliance or system essentially runs |

For example, Goonswarm Federation is an alliance, How would you name that with the above criteria you mention? Leave it as Goonswarm Federation? In which case whats the point of even trying to categorize alliances? Or call it Goonswarm Federation Empire because the name is Goonswarm Federation and it could be considered to be run as an empire or dictatorship?...
The Soviet Union called itself a Republic..... That was the "R" in the acronym USSR. |

We are working on that as our next interview, actually. Recently we got Quickgloves to speak on STB's plans and perspective on New Eden. |
