I want to state up front that this an opinion of a total newbie... But, I think it might have at least some value, because every player will be a newbie at some point and probably get the same frustration I am getting. I haven't even actually made it to a battle yet...
The menu system is beyond awkward. This is a PS3 game... 99% of all PS3 menu systems use the following conventions: X/cross - Select or approve O/circle - Back or cancel To edit a text field - Highlight with a stick, hit X, edit, hit X when done.
The menus in D514 seem to be made by twelve different people who've never met. To edit something, I have to hit square. To confirm something I hit the circle (most of the time). To cancel something, I hit X (most of the time). When in my "room", circle is used to open something... like the market place. But, then to get out of the market place, I hit circle again. This is inconsistent within it's own framework and is mostly backwards from the years of gaming that's been drilled into us.
Even if you ignore the cross/circle swapping, using circle to get into a menu and then using circle to get out of a menu is inconsistent and confusing. If a new player has to concentrate and read every option to get from one menu choice to another, they're probably going to start the actual game play with a really bad impression before they even get to fire a shot.

I think we'll be pretty alone on this but I too was annoyed with having to relearn all the basics of menu navigation for Dust. |

Wow, I hadn't even noticed this, strange. Also, I have not found a single spot in the menus where X was cancel. Using circle to access the marketplace from the merc quarters makes some sense as circle is the 'interact' button. |

You are not alone. It's been this way from the start. Several builds ago it was reported. There have not been any changes AFAIK.
This is an excellent time to bring it up again.
I urge anyone who wonders why they pop out of the NeoCon when they expect to go up a level or who has created a character with no last name and had to start over to post to this thread in support! |

I don't have much of an issue with it; I always just use the D-pad to navigate various levels of the neocom, only occasionally pressing X or O. Of course, that could just be because I'm more of a PC gamer, so I'm more accustomed to using WASD to navigate menus rather than up/down/confirm/cancel.
Maybe it's more problematic to console gamers? If that's true on a whole, it's worth looking into.
P.S. Note that I didn't say console or PC was better than the other. Let's not get up in arms. |

My gripe with the menu navigation systems is that its incosistent; someplaces you can navigate using d-pad and some places only that left stick works. And for example configuring keyboard bindings you use right trick to scroll yp/down on the list. |

I totally agree & I think as this going to be a 'free' game things need to be as stream lined & user friendly as possible. The more minor irritations there are with the user experience the more likely people are to get frustrated & delete it. People won't be paying for it so if they get and initial bad impression there is not much incentive to struggle on with it, its no loss to them, they can just delete it & forget about it. I think minor points like this are important, I really think the skill system needs a major re-think for the same reason, as does having the equipment/weapon switching on the same button on the control pad. I think navigating the game has got to be a easy & self evident for people as possible.
I'm excited for this game, it appeals to me a lot so I'm the sort of person who would struggle on with it. I'm sure many casual users wouldn't if they experience too many minor frustrations, at first impression stage they might think its badly designed & bad design can breed resentment. |

99% is exaggerated. A ton of PS3 games use different default menu navigation controls such as triangle to go back and square to edit/alter. You also forgot to take into account that most PS3 games have more than one control scheme. But that doesn't really matter.
Having the control scheme you listed being set as default would be nice prevent headaches. By the next build, customizable controls should be added so the controls could suit mostly everyone. |

Yeah totally agree +1
The amount of times I accidentally pressed X and it continued to the next screen when I was meant to press square to edit something is just silly. |

This game is not meant for "casual" gamers. This game requires a lot of time investment. I'm not hating on casual gamers, nor am I bringing up the "hardcore vs casual" argument.
Back to the topic, I believe custom controls for the controller is going to be implemented soon, so your problems will be solved with that. As far as changing the universal commands, the controls and button scheme have been like this since the 1st beta release and it doesn't seem like it's going to change. |

I'd love to see this too but I have not seen where any Dev said they would be in the next build. Did I miss it? The first request for customized controls was on May 20th. We have not seem them yet. |

If there isn't a revamp of button usage in the UI eventually it would be really sad. I'm hoping it's just that CCP is just consumed with bigger problems.
As Sacara and Maximum suggest the first thing that happens to a player is frustration -- their muscle memory and expectations are not met. That is just bad design and it doesn't have to be true.
It's the difference between the plumber that puts on protective dust shoes and the one who tracks mud through the house. One looks like a professional and the other makes more work for you. The plumbing might be just as good but it's the first guy you stick with.
