But most of its excellence lies more in its potential. Given how I've played EVE before, I know how this potential can sprout out. But it needs to be followed up on to be truly excellent.
So, let's break it down.
The good, the bad and the incomplete.
The good:
+ I love fitting. This is a huge step up from your usual "Perks" system in most FPS games.
+ I love how you buy and order vehicles. Unlike other FPS games where vehicles are just there and the ability to use them as limited to availability, you can choose to specialize in certain vehicles and order it any time.
+ The rubiks cube is just as much fun as it is in EVE.
+ Tactical and requires teamwork.
The bad:
- No capacitor is a huge missed opportunity. We could have had things like electronic warfare. Not to mention how this could have been a balancing point for laser and hybrid weapons.
~ Sloooow progression. It's going to be as slow as EVE Online. But at least in EVE online it was all passive so you could take a break from EVE if you were getting tired of it and not lose progress. Here, the passive generation is so slow it might as well not be there. This is going to be a serious grind when it comes out.
The incomplete:
~ Lack of race specific weapons means that shield tanking is infinitely more preferable to armor tanking. Because why armor tank when most of the weapons are better or worse damage against you and you can move faster AND you get faster regenerating health AND quick, passive regen? WTB Pulse Rifle.
~ Again on lack of race specific stuff. I was hoping to see more Amarr or Minmatar gear but aside from a few scattered weapons or suits, it's almost entirely Gallente or Caldari stuff. Now, don't get me wrong. I like Gallente and Caldari in their own right. But I want to see more of what the Minmatar and Amarr can do in an FPS.
~ Beta is so chaotic. Imagine if EVE just threw players into random all out slug fests on their first moments. It would turn far more people away. Part of what made EVE so great is how it the PvP worked as a synchronized unit against another synchronized unit. Where recon, niche roles, getting info on targets and a single well placed target painter can mean the difference between victory and getting your fleet decimated.
In the beta though, it's just "Random spawns! Kill as much as you can before you die!" I try work with my teammates but they don't work with me and nothing means well.
However, I see the potential for the game to become more organized in the future.
But like many other disappointments, potential is only as good as it is followed up on.
That's my thought. Any thoughts on said |
