Ok, I've read all about how dropships are useless, and there's no doubt, they're tricky to fly, but if I wanted an easy game I'd be playing SWTOR. So I'll be on the battlefield with the following objectives:
1. survive. Is it possible for a dropship to survive an entire game if it avoids hot LZs and doesn't try to be a floating tank? I think it is, with practice. If it isn't, then proving it over and over and over again will give CCP the data it needs to make adjustments.
2. Develop tactics. What is the best method for avoiding ground fire? Stay low, stay high? Do a barrel roll? How long do I have to stay on the ground to pick up troops? How close to a hot LZ can I get without becoming a deathtrap?
3. Make a name. We understand you have a choice in combat insertion. We want you to choose Crazy Cussler!
So, keep an eye out for me. I won't be in a dropship every battle, probably because I can't afford to replace them every battle, but when I am, I'll be on coms for anyone who wants a ride! |

I'll keep an neye out for you lad. Haven't had the chance to squad up with anyone using DS yet. I think the price and grind to get to the good stuff is a bit off putting for a few but I'd be up for it. |

Ok, after a couple of flights, I'm beginning to get the hang of these things. I can now land/take off efficiently and where I want to. Flying point to point is fairly easy.
Controls: I haven't seen these posted anywhere, so for the record, here's what I've found
Leftstick: Up and down correspond to pitch. Left and right correspond to roll. Rightstick: Left and right correspond to yaw. Up and down correspond to camera angle
Left trigger 2 (the top one): Gain altitude Left trigger 1 (the bottom one): Lose altitude
When you yaw, the ship has a tendency to roll in that direction. This is one of the things that makes flying this beast tough. You have to counter the roll while you're turning, or you'll flip and our careen out of control. So to turn left, you have to go left with the right stick, which causes it to roll left, so counter by going right on the left stick. Turning also causes you to lose altitude, so tap L2 to maintain altitude.
Even though the drop ships are more or less immune to small arms fire, a few hits from a heavy weapon and you're advising your passengers to exist via the nearest emergency exit. I have found that moderate altitude and moderate speed are a good combination, and as always, don't go straight for more than five seconds. This last isn't really a problem because...
Dropships are too big for the current maps. Given that they can't float above the battlefield smiting with impunity, dropships are best used in their intended role: Transport. However, the maps aren't big enough yet for this to be worth it. Some of the larger skirmish maps are almost big enough, but for ambush, you can cross the map in 5-10 seconds. Since you can't land under fire, best you can accomplish is nauseating your passengers while distracting your enemy.
Still, I'll keep practicing, because the bigger maps are coming soon(tm) |

Love the post Klive! The boards need more of this, and more dropship pilots. |
