This is kind of useless since, by the time I put the order on and my squad shows up to do it, I've already captured it. I know you can also place Squad Commands via the overview map but in the heat of battle, you can NOT go to the overview map.
In BF3, all you have to do in order to mark objectives and give the Capture/Defend order is to look at the objective Icon and press select. This is very useful at the beginning of matches cuz squads can strategize and capture Objectives that the enemy team might not be going towards first. Such an ability will only inspire people to use more squad commands and work better as a team.
And we also need personal squad commands. Very often I find myself out of ammo on my Main Weapon and running around clicking my empty gun hoping somebody gets the hint and drops a Nanohive. It shouldn't be like that. :P
We need personal squad commands that makes an ammo icon appear over our head if we need ammo or a health icon if we need repairs. These advanced squad commands should be available for everyone, not just the Squad Leader and make it so that anyone near the person that is requesting something can see it, not just the people in your squad.
If you can come up with plausible button layout command then I'm with you on the personal "need" icons. As it stands I don't see a way to put "I need ammo" into a button as they're all used up already. Maybe it could be automatic? Like when you have one mag in your gun and 2 extra a little bullet icon pops up next to your suit? That might work and keep all the confusion to a minimum- but it would have to be visible by squads only. Otherwise that's too much info on your HUD.
And YES! We need more detailed commands made available. When I'm SC I like to pull up the overview map and take a gander at all the commotion and only then make a decision. That all means I usually have to take cover and hope no one shoots me, but that's my choice. It does not mean that I should be restricted to a first person-manually activated "capture/defend" function on key objectives.
With my command style I sacrifice personal gain for the overall gain and safety of my squad and team. Why should I be limited to what I can do on the overview if I'm in command? In skirmish you're fighting for the control of objectives! Why can't you put a defend order on the most vital components of that game mode????
The only thing I can do right now is talk through my headset at people who don't turn theirs on, hope they're listening, and blitz ahead of my squad to get to an objective with zero support and scramble to set a capture/defend order and hope I don't die. That's not command material right there, that's hero crap. Hero's get people killed.
I want to sit behind a rock, or in a drop ship, and use my overview to make the most informed decisions I can and set goals, directives, and commands using that!
It seems like a simple feature anyone would need in skirmish, ya know? Put more squad command features in. Specifically, the ability to set commands on the lettered objectives!
