Come-on people, whenever you enter a match, just hit the SELECT button and see if you're squad leader. People don't realize that they have this role and ignore all of its benefits. I was just playing now and the squad leaders just won't give any orders, even won't call in Orbital Strikes when our squads achieve the ability to do so  |

How does the SL know to call in a strike (is there a message or something) and what are the controls for OB and giving orders? |

If your squad becomes eligible for an Orbital Strike, you get an on-screen message telling you about it.
And the squad leader calls in the orbital strike from the right d-pad menu, alongside vehicles. Select it and you go to the map screen and can make it rain explosions. |

If the squad leader marks a "defend" objective, then all kills by teammates near the objective give a bonus, and hacking a marked objective has the same result.
Add the ability to call in Orbital strikes, and... not much, but yes. |

Last time I tried giving orders the UI was so buggy and difficult to use that I gave up, aside from that I play usually either a sniper or logi and neither give you much time to "control the herd". |

If you're SL while in game, just press south on d-pad and the map comes on-screen. You can then move the cursor over turrets, soldiers, vehicles and press X, this will give you a choice of wether to defend, attack or rally to the objectives. |
