Gallente and Caldari used to share their home system until they fell out and had a big war. They've been fighting ever since.
Amarr invaded Minmatar hundreds of years ago and enslaved most of them. Most have since escaped or been freed, but obviously these two don't get on either.
Minmatar and Gallente are allies, as are Amarr and Caldari.
Then there are a bunch of pirate factions (Serpentis, Angels, Blood Raiders, etc.) and the mysterious, isolated, super-high-tech Jove.
None of this matters in Dust right now as the current beta seems to be a big free-for-all. |

caldari are allied with amarr. Main fight is gal vs cal, and amarr vs minnie. Amarr vs gal, and cal vs minnie isn't common. It's also more a cold war, with militia eve pilots and dust merc acting as proxies. The syndicate, blood raiders, sansha's nation, angel cartel, gurista's, eom, serpentis are criminal/pirate groups that form there own factions. Concord is like the u.n. The jove are super advanced and keep to themselves. Mordu's legion are intaki gallente that took the caldari side and have there own territory. Sister's of eve are like space nuns. Khanid are breakaway amarr group that favor missiles over lasers and have good relations with the caldari. Ammatar are minmatar that have joined the amarr empire, not popular with other minmatar. |

The Jove were attacked by the amarr at one point in recent history. The amarr got wrecked and this allowed the minmatar a window of opportunity to rebel and become free. |

in clear skies they are. not really from ccp though.

the jove have a region in space in eve but the gates are removed and no one can get there. there was a guy on the internet that claimed he got to jove space by using a glitch with the old deep space probes. he said he spent a couple days or something in warp and was able to cross from one region to the next. convincing pics of the station, info screen, and some other pics. ccp claims it isn't possible because the session change from going through a gate is actually going to another server. each system is it's own server basically. so no telling if any of it was true or not. officially no one can get to their space even though there are regions around it. |

Yes... it didn't go well for the Amarr. They lost a fleet.
I think one of the Jove ships may have had mechanical difficulties. |
