I'm interested in getting good with dropships, so I figured we'd share what we've figured out so far and before long we can be having dogfights again. Since I don't have a keyboard/mouse setup for my PS3 I'll be discussing dualshock controls.
1) Turning seems to be done with the right analog stick. Doing this will cause your dropship to pitch in the direction of the turn, so using the left analog stick to compensate (by moving it in the opposite direction of the turn) helps you control the turn.
2) Accelerating to a good speed seems to be done by pointing at least slightly down with the left analog stick and holding down R1. This causes a slight loss in elevation.
3) The dropship maintains inertia when turning, so while banking you'll still continue traveling in the original direction. Releasing R1 during a turn seems to minimize this.
4) Staying still is now an active process. There seems to be wind and it will move you.
5) There is currently a bug where a dropship will not take off. I have found that I can get around this by powercycling my PS3.
6) I haven't found any reliable way to decelerate yet. I just let off R1 and coast to slow down.
7) You're gonna crash a lot. |

Does anyone remember the helicopter in GTA III? Cause it feels like the physics was ripped directly from that.. as far as slowing the beast down goes i tap the R2 and pull the nose right up from full throttle to stop in about 500m or so. Of course tjis leaves you super exposed so i fly the dropships like boats now. Cut the throttle waaay bedore the apot you want to overwatch.. think about how you dock a boat |

No they're jets, I have never seen a transport helicopter fly in this manner EVER.

They are, in fact, neither jets nor helicopters. |

Just saying if you where flying a blackhawk hind or chinnock in this manner you're killing your entire payload. |

I agree landing is quite different than before.
I still need to take some gunners on a loop de loop. Maybe those that shoot me while I'm practicing will get to experience one ;)

considering how the drop ships are flying now, and the fact that we are testers. my guess is this mode of flying is for an aircraft they don't want to release yet but still want the way it flies tested.

ummm yes they are! There is a reason you are crashing you are flying them like no helicopter pilot would. helicopters can do every thing those drop ships can but doing so is inadvisable, same as in the game, in a helicopter if you just throw the stick forward you will flip it, you have to set an angle and keep it to go a direction. that said if they are going to fly like this a variable throttle would be nice so that you can compensate for slip in a turn allowing you to climb or fall as needed. so r2/l2 instead of r1/r2 or maybe keep it r1/r2 and have a throttle gage that is settable. then you would be like a real copter. |

More like flying coffins of doom. Havent seen alot of dropships around. Probs we have actually to pay ISK to even use the militia 1 and the controlls are just annoying. I would like a training programm for piloting so that we can ourself get used to the controlls and not just thrown into battle where you get shot down instantly from a forgegun or swarm launcher. To prevent n00bs using dropships all what we needed was to get rid of blueprint dropships. But oh well CCP overdone it. |

It's possible they're making it difficult on purpose. When they interface with EVE cost is going to become something of a non-issue for DUST gear. They're probably trying to keep it from becoming all vehicle vs all vehicle by making it so that a person can't make any sort of effective use of dropships without a lot of practice.
Also, has anyone figured out a way to avoid swarms? I used to could outrun them or go around a building. Now even if I see them coming I can't get out of the way. This is problematic when flying a viper, darn things might as well be made of construction paper. |

Since they already added keyboard and mouse capabilities why not add joystick capabilities for those committed pilots? |

Transport helos do not fly in this manner if they did you just killed everyone in your cargo compartment. Gunships i can see flying this way but we dont have em.
And unlike a real helo I have lost all control of the tail rotor. There is no Z-axis control anymore. |
