We all know that the Cross Communication right now is horrible correct? However take the idea and turn it into a skill that can be learned and used to your advantage. No you don't just spawn in and can start listening that would be over-powered and everyone knows that. However much like powerful pieces of equipment (Remote Explosives, Nanites [If people wouldn't auto-suicide themselves] Repair Tools, etc. etc. the list could go on forever.) This could also be a piece of equipment that would be plantable. This will all be explained later.
As an introduction to how this would work, I would like to tell you how the skill(s) would work together. One skill would be for how complex of a listening device you could plant is (Basic, Advanced, Prototype). Another would increase its listening range, and finally the third skill would reduce the plant time. I would like to leave how much the skillbooks cost and their respective multipliers to the minds of CCP, as they would know best in how to balance all of this out.
Now to the actual piece of equipment, (And the main part of how this would all work). First off, you can't carry around a dozen of these things, you can carry one, and only one per life, though you can go to a supply depot to restock once your previous one has been destroyed by an enemy unit/ally unit (Friendly fire will be coming eventually, hence why I put the 'Ally' part in).
The second part of the equipment is the planting time. Initially you would start with five seconds. (This is an example number not to be taken literally). You have a skill that reduces the plant time down to three seconds once fully maxed out. The reason why I would like to see a plant time is that this is a powerful piece of equipment that allows you to listen into your enemies strategy. That's not to be taken lightly as it can win you, or lose you a game.
The third part of the equipment is that it would have a listening range, so you can only hear a certain amount of what's going on. (That way you don't have people on a building planting them so they can't be destroyed unless you can get a Dropship in the air.) You would have passive listening rather than active listening so you don't have to stand around and listen to your enemy while exposing yourself to danger by not being able to move. Also depending on how close or far away the enemy is from the listening device the louder and softer there voice is respecitvely, as well as some miscellaneous noises such as static and what say you (So you can't here everything they say if they're far away.)
Finally is the pricing. Obviously this wouldn't be cheap as it would have to go through all of the static of the battlefield as well as any jamming system (Which they might want to incorporate as well as a means to stop these from becoming to powerful). So I was thinking that a militia grade was roughly 6,000 credits (This may be overpriced, so it's up to the developers as per usual).
Now I want to give my thanks to everyone at CCP for making this amazing game, and I want to give my friend Seismicgear a thank you as well as he helped me come up with this idea. There are also a few people across the Playstation community that have also helped push this idea along and have helped me refine it to this point, again thank you all.
Comment your thoughts and ideas on how this should work and how this could be an even better idea than what it already is (In my eyes, of course this is all just a matter of opinion from the beholder right?) |

You're right that I have not played Eve. Voice channels may be locked on that particular game however if you think about it, a battleship could have secure communication channels, it would have the room for such things to be on it. However would a soldier have enough room to fit a large device that would prevent his conversation from being overheard, especially if he's in the middle of a fire-fight? Probably not.
Don't get me wrong I love espionage and all the intrigue that goes with it, however not everything can be solved by using a backstabbing method, people will get smarter and simply not allow people in, unless the person has proven their worth and loyalty. This is simply a way to get information that you would otherwise not have on the battlefield, which in itself has it's own intrigue as to where the damn device would be. It would create a secondary objective for the enemy and allow you to use it as not only a diversion but a marking tool for snipers to say "They are near here."
Also having a spy in a corporation wouldn't provide much since all you do is get hired for a job, get paid, gain customer loyalty from Eve players and spend your hard earned cash. (There's most likely going to be a lot more than that, but for now that's all I can conclude from the info that we've gotten about Corporations). It may allow you to recieve a little bit of pre-game tactic knowledge, but then again, nothing goes according to plan so the information that you would recieve in the game lobby would most likely change and render your counter strategy useless. That is another part of intrigue on the battlefield, guessing what your opponent would do, again this device helps push this along in a simple way, you know where your enemy is going to place things (Maybe if they say it whilst in range of this said device) and you leave your opponent baffled as to how you could react to their strategy so quickly.
There are several ways this device implements the intrigue that you want with a different way of adding it in, that said, it also does weaken some other parts of gameplay, I will admit that as well, however no game can be perfect and their will, no matter what, always be a loop hole somewhere somehow, and that is what creates the intrigue (and frustration of any game that we have played). |
