It has been mentioned a number of time by Dust devs that one of the uses of Aurum will be to side grade your weapon, which doesn't make it more powerful, but does allow it to be customised to suit your particular play style.
This doesn't seem to be reflected in the current build at all. And it hasn't been mentioned in any dev blogs (yet)
Has this idea been dropped? Was it just marketing spin to appease those who were worried about Dust514 being Pay to Win?
Anyone have any ideas? |

Well so far it isnt the sidegrades that are in but early access weapons are. So far the side grades already in are just variants of the main weapon. |

The idea is that AUR items will have reduced fitting and skill requirements.
No new abilities, or completely new classes, as this would make those P2W.
How AUR is currently implemented is IMHO how it should be done. It was what was promised, and its how its been implemented so far. |

The main thing I have noticed is that I can us weapons and gear that are more similar to a higher tier equipment. See Mass Drivers. |

For assault dropsuits as I was working my way up I found the AU suits to be definite side-grades with maybe one exception. The really early assault type 2 suit (I think it was) seemed to be the best up until the level 4 white suit (forgot what it was called but think it had an additional slot?) and then proto.
All of the other options were ok but mainly useful if you wanted to have a different look in the pre-match lobby...
I really like the Allotek burst assault rifle and it will do as much damage as the CreoDron but takes a lot more finesse to use. Which I lack. But I would consider that a definite play style side grade in the prototype tier assault rifles. Burst rifles like the Allotek are really sweet if you can consistently pull off head shots. Unfortunately the auto aim/ aim assist/ hit detection can mess you up with burst as (at least in my experience) it is more effective to use scope fire for high damage and not a great hip fire weapon. The CreoDron is really solid and the "noob" assault rifle par excellence since sometimes it seems like all you have to do is hold down R1, hip fire and shuffle your feet until your clip is almost empty then run away! a few times for a decently successful run in a match. I use it a lot.
I would consider those examples of side-grades. I think we will continue to see more and more. |

^ the aurum dropsuits are exactly identical to the isk versions. you're just paying for a reskin.
the type-II suit is not another version of the basic suits, it's the next tier up. it actually requires more training than the basic. it also doesn't cost aurum anyway...
all in all i'm mostly happy with how they've implemented aurum. most of it is just early access to the same stuff.
even when you consider the aurum gear with reduced fitting requirements, that's also a type of early access when you consider skills like electronics, engineering, weapon upgrades, so on. (though they may be to much, and outclass what's possible with excellent skills.)
the only issue has been with a piece here or there. AV grenades for example, but that's already been confirmed as a glitch. the only other thing i can think of off the top of my head is the thukker grenade. they are the only impact det on the market. (but they've been good about it so far so i'm sure that'll get hammered out eventually.) |

Which was sort of my point. Mainly that it is fairly easy to get early on and as a non AU suit is as good as or better than most of the other options in that level or the next level up from that. So we are almost talking half-grade or diagonal-grade improvements there...

See this is where I get confused (and a little disappointed that again we may have another example of CCPs marketing department saying one thing and the reality being another).
Originally they said the concept of side-grades was to be able to customise your weapons using Aurum.
What we have is being able to use Aurum to purchase higher tier equipment sooner. (Not that this is necessarily a bad thing).
So CCP, has the concept changed. |

Also they're adding in cpu/pg less use weapons varieties known as specialist. |

Sometimes it is slightly better. Sometimes the gear is slightly worse. Sometimes it is exactly the same with different colors.
What do you mean by "customise" your weapon? I don't think they ever said you could customize your weapon. They have oft repeated that you could customize your character (i.e. use heavy slow suit and a sniper rifle) and that is exactly what you are doing with AU vs ISK items.
Also, in the player driven market AU items will be sold for ISK and will be available for all players who only want to spend ISK. If CCP scrap the player driven market then maybe the AU vs. ISK item controversy might have some merit but otherwise it is just kicking up horse puckey. |

Side grades may come later, they need to balance the regular gear before the variants can be balanced. We may someday have aur weapon in between standard and breech or standard and assault. We could also have extreme versions, slower rof higher damage per shot then breach, and a higher rof lower damage per hit then assault version. Better to balance isk weapons, then add side grade with expansions over time I think, easier to balance and probably make ccp more money with many little releases of aur item types then one big one at launch. |

I wouldn't mind the ability to purchase better weapons sooner.. But reduced fitting requirements is pretty lame. You could get all proto gear for the resources of advanced.. Which is a big difference.
I respected the side grade idea. Add a new skin to the model and you have something people would pay for. I'd love to have a mix between the Breach AR and a Tactical AR. Reduce the damage a bit to account for the range and you're set. No set advantage but you get an awesome gun.
Obviously the reduced resources is a huge advantage. |

The reduced resources are a huge advantage yes, but it won't make it pay to win, the simple fact that you'll be able to buy these AUR items on the market for isk at player regulated prices means pay to win will only exist if you count isk as the currency. You can pay a million isk for 1 suit or you can pay 50 AUR for the exact same spec, no pay to win there. |
