I have seen many threads with pilots complaining that people steal their vehicles upon delivery or while out capturing an objective or repairing. And many more about idiots getting in the vehicle's turrets and spam firing at the MCC rather than at the enemy tank killing everyone below. There have been a lot of suggestions going back and forth and I hope my suggestion is an amicable compromise between everything and will solve everyone's problems. As a note: I only have Vehicle Command level 1 so this isn't me as a pilot trying to just benefit myself.
1. Skill Requirements to use Vehicles Simple enough: if you don't have your HAV skill to level 5 you can't even attempt to drive someone else's Proto HAV. This makes sense in that, in order to operate the advanced equipment, you must possess the required skills. This is done in EVE. If a person comes across a super advanced, and expensive, Dreadnought just floating unpiloted in the middle of space they can't just jump into it and fly off - they need the required skills. DUST should be no different on that regard than EVE.
1A. Turrets Too This could also be expanded to include turrets. Have a Prototype Missile Turret on your Dropship? Only people with Missile Turret level 5 can use it. Same reason as above: its prototype equipment and you need the required skills to use it.
Benefits - This will keep just anyone from jumping in the vehicle you just ordered and driving it off to die. - This ensures that one or two high SP players can't just spawn advanced vehicles for everyone. - This will keep vehicle skilled players in charge of vehicles.
Drawbacks - If the owner of that Proto HAV dies and no one else has the skills to drive it then it's dead equipment. (Though this could add gameplay if the enemy can hack vehicles and commandeer the deserted tank) - People can't steal other people's Proto vehicles anymore (Though, is this really a drawback?)
2. Access Control prompts for Vehicle Commander Whoever spawned the vehicle (and therefore paid for it) is that vehicle's commander. They should have ultimate say on who can drive and operate the guns. Therefore, whenever a player (who has the appropriate skills per above) tries to enter a vehicle the commander gets a quick prompt saying "-Player Name- is attempting to operate -Vehicle Name-". They can then approve or deny the request. The same would go for the turrets. "-Player Name- is attempting to operate the -Turret Name-" with "Approve" and "Deny" on the prompt.
The prompt could be small and simple. A little box that appears in the lower part of the screen with Approve as X and Deny as O. Since you're a vehicle pilot you probably won't be up in he front lines so the prompt shouldn't interfere too much (And I have a feeling pilots will take a bit of interference for this level of vehicle access control).
- The vehicle commander can kick anyone from any position within their vehicle. So if he previously approved Player X to be the driver he could, at any time, switch to the driving position and eject Player X.
- Upon the vehicle commanders death the vehicle is considered "Uncontrolled" and anyone can get in it and drive it or operate the turrets.
- If the vehicle commander, after death, manages to re-enter his currently "Uncontrolled" vehicle (he would still retain the ability to auto kick anyone from any position) it comes back under his control and the prompting begins again.
Benefits - The person who put the ISK / SP into the vehicle gets to control the vehicle. - Removes the ability for your vehicle to be stolen. - Allows you to filter who can operate the turrets on your vehicle. - Allows you to exit the vehicle to repair, capture objectives, or leisurely waltz around the battlefield without threat of an unauthorized person stealing your ride. - Ensures that the vehicle doesn't become "dead" on the pilots death. - Allows the vehicle to be reclaimed by the pilot after their death.
Drawbacks - A lot of people trying to enter a vehicle could spam prompt the pilot. - Idiots would no longer be able to jump in a tank to mindlessly shoot at the MCC. |

I wholeheartedly agree with the skill requirements thing. Try and spawn myself an HAV. sit there, wait a little bit for it to arrive. walk over to it, and it drives away with some person in it right into the fire of 3 turrets (and that person doesn't use the shield booster I have equipped).
Though Vehicle thieves have been the most annoying thing about FPSes for years. Another thing that could be tried.
- A vehicle's owner always has instant access to their vehicle, and can freely move around in it (IE, if someone driving, and your in a turret, and switch, you can take driver and force the other player into a turret). And can enter even if the vehicle is full (kicking out one of the current riders)
- Other teammates of the owner have a 10-15 second time that they must hold the "enter" button before being allowed to get into a vehicle they don't own.
- Exemption to the last rule however is that a player can instantly enter a vehicle owned by someone else, if that player is inside of the vehicle.
- A new R2 menu is added (by pressing something like L2 while in the R2 menu) that opens a circular menu that can be used to kick a player from the vehicle. Upon being kicked, they have to wait at least 30 seconds or something before reentering.
Benefits - Still the player who puts the isk into a vehicle has highest priority to it - Still prevents your vehicle from being stolen - Anybody of any skill can still drive the vehicle in your absence, and operate turrets - Lets you filter people you don't want in your vehicle out - Ability to get out to repair/other and if you see someone try to drive off in the vehicle, you can go and get inside to get it back - Kicking someone you've seen in action and decide you don't want in would probably be a bit quicker then deciding at the beginning whether or not they were allowed in in the first place.
Drawbacks - Might be annoying to implement - The jeeps might still get stolen if you are out of them because they are too fast for the owner to chase down - High level players could still spawn numerous advanced vehicles for their team
Notes It does still stand on the note of getting out and repairing though. The way I've been coming at Dust, is a squad shooter, similar to the Battlefield line of games. And at least from experience with these other games, Its best to have a teammate repair your vehicle for you while you keep the main gun running outputting damage. The silly people shooting the MCC though has to be the most annoying part about this beta yet though.
I currently haven't tested out the "Logistics" categories of anything yet though. I'm assuming there is a "logi tank" with remote shield transporters and armor reps. Perhaps that might be interesting on the "people stealing tanks while being repaired by owners" side of things. I'm going to have to test them out this evening |
