Cant say for Crysis 2, but neither Killzone 2 or 3 runs at 1080p, not even Uncharted runs at that resolution, they are all 720p or less (upscaled to 720p).
GT5 runs in 1080p, but for a game like Dust to run native at that resolution the graphics would look worse then they do now. Altho it would be great if the game would look like Killzone 3, but I doubt it. What we might get is something similar to Bulletstorm, which also runs on the Unreal Engine.
The ultimate would have been if CCP had the chance to use Tech5 instead of Unreal, Rage is beautiful and and it runs super smooth on the PS3.. add to that the mega textures and huge map sizes.. Now I dont know much about how licenses for these engines work, but I guess that Tech5 was not ready at the time CCP had to make a commitment to using one.
But to be honest, when I heard the game was to use Unreal Engine I was some what put off, it has allways performed badly on the PS3.. especially with the texture popin, which was very apparent in the previous build, and some what it the current. And for games like Borderlands to still have that annoying feature at release does not make me believe that CCP will over come it. I will admit that Tech5 suffers from a similar issue in Rage, but not as annoying as it ever was in Bulletstorm and Borderlands.

No, the game engine is the game, its not like a plugin or module that can be switch as you find something better. That is all so why Dust uses an "old" engine like Unreal and not Tech5 from ID, since Tech5 probably did not get available before Rage was released.
What I dont understand is why Sony did not offer help on getting them access to something like the Killzone engine or perhaps the one used in Resistance. Now I dont know if either of these are suitable for a game like Dust or if developers are even interested in licensing the engine to others. |

Yes it did, but not nearly as bad as the Unreal Engine. For me it was not a problem, I dont remember if ID fixed the issue in a patch or I simply ignored it. Rage might not be the pinnacle of FPS games, but the Tech5 engines runs incredible well on the PS3, the framerate is excellent and I think I read somewhere its usually stable at 60fps.
Now I've also played Bulletstorm (which is also in my opinion is fantastic game) and it has issues with framerate and texture popin, more often than I ever experienced with Rage.
The Unreal engine is a proven technology, but its getting old.. and for me it does not really say AAA title, but what can you expect from a free game. :-) The game will be awesome even with the texture popin, and I'm sure by the next build the game will look even better. |

Dante Daedrik wrote:So then how does CCP expect to evolve Dust on future consoles if it is going to use the UT Engine (which will eventually be outdated). You cant just patch and build like on PC to stay competitive on the console market.
Well, depends on if Dust becomes a hit or not, but for a PS4 version to be made CCP would have to either stay with the Unreal Engine and just port the game 1:1 onto the PS4 (not to mention they have to wait for the Unreal Engine to become available on this platform) or they would have to rewrite the game engine from scratch.
A possibility would be if the current Unreal Engine is compatible with the new one showen some months back, that would ease the transition but I doubt it. Another possibility would be for CCP to maintain the current engine and add new things as they go along. |
