Hello All,
I'm pleased to be here, but it seems I'm having some trouble getting off on a good start. I understand you have to crawl before you can walk. I have yet to get a single kill, even using the default classes doesn't do anything for me. Would someone be so kind as to guide me in the right direction. This is getting very frustrating |

as the skill points are boosted at the moment all the people who are in the beta have got lots of skills and nice guns so as a beginner using the standard fits can be quite hard
what i would say is try to stick in a group and try to assist/ninja kills or failing that jump in as a gunner in a tank and ***** on assists |

Tech's guide is awesome.
You can't go wrong with a non-direct combat role. Logistics (heal your buddies) or Scout (either a fast hacker scout or a sniper scout). |

Don't let dieing put you off. You always get rewarded for participating in Dust matches even if you get 0/50 and are on the losing team. Just be sure to hack something. |

This link is a great place to start. You will find that DUST has the highest learning curve for new commers, but also the most helpful and devoted community. Do not worry; I had a %.05 kill to death ratio after my first five matchs! This game take a long time to get into, but I promise you that after a good three days or so of playing, testing, trying, and finding your unique play stayle and battle field role, you will have a great time with this game. Just note; the game is still very much in beta with a lot of missing parts and narrow testing at the moment, but give CCP time and use your play time now to learn the ropes for when the game is complete. Happy hunting!^^ fòá8êÿ8Pêdïñ! 8òä8PÉ8òä8PÉ! |

Oh! and IceyBurnz is 100% correct; I have had matches that ended 1/20 kills to deaths, but I have over a dozen hacks, two dozen respawns on my uplinks, and an uncountable number of heals and repairs to end the match with over 150K in skill points. Not every role is a combat one! |

Find you a role on the battlefield. Unless you've been playing since the beta opened up, trying to be a lonewolf will get you a negative KD every match. Trust me, I've tried. Always try to be with at least one teammate. And focus on leveling up one thing at a time, not all at once. |

You will also find it easier to get kills during the beta events, as a large number of noobs flood in during those periods due to weekend passes. I've noticed a huge jump in the difficulty of the game during non-beta event weekends due to lots of super-powered mercs with the best equipment. I would say just hang in there, and I'm sure you'll notice a huge boost in your kill count once you've trained up the right skills. |

Hack stuff and man gun turrets. (Both installations and on vehicles.) You won't die as much, you'll get kills and assists, and you'll free up guys with advanced infantry gear to fight on the ground. It's most efficient for a team to have the lower level guys running turrets.
You should absolutely not be running around on your own trying to engage infantry. The prototype guys have more health, faster health recharge, and better guns; the only way you can even stand a chance is with a squad of teammates. |

don't use the default fits, they are bad.
take the isk you started with and buy 1 copy of every militia infantry item, with the exception of the militia scrambler pistol, militia nanite injector, and if you purchased the merc pack, militia SMG. (pistol and injector are bugged, and the toxin is better than the militia smg, and is still infinite)
make your own fits.
the 2 most basic fits i suggest you make are assault suits, with dual shield extenders in the high slots. nanohive in the equipment. smg in the sidearm. assault rifle in the light slot of one, swarm launcher in the light slot of the other. use the low slot for an armor repper if it'll fit. if not use a CPU or PG upgrade to help make the rest fit. if there's room, stick militia locus grenades in there to.
the rifle fit isn't TO reliant on the smg, so you can remove it to make grenades or a repper fit if you want, but the swarm fit REALLY needs a sidearm. you'll regret it if you go without a good one.
these are just about as basic as it gets, but while they're not impressive, (you're still likely to get wrecked by people with good gear) they are intelligently assembled, and should be the easiest analogue for players experienced with MOST other shooters.
from there feel free to tinker. so long as you use all militia gear you can't really lose anything.
as for actually playing, i hate to say it but while you're in all militia gear, you are pretty much expendable. play like it.
- don't "save" your grenades. you're not likely to live long, and those grenades coulda done SOMETHING. even if you just throw them at an objective to make sure it's clear of remote explosives before you or a teammate hack.
- don't "save" your nano-hives either. that's free ammo for you and any teammate nearby. a lot of times after a good fight over an objective there will be at least 1 or 2 guys who need some bullets. this is especially true of higher skillpoint players. i carry nanohives myself. yet with prototype gear, if i'm having a good game i can still survive long enough to run out of hives AND ammo. so i will never begrudge taking it from somebody else. free points for you, and it keeps my expensive suit from becoming worthless.
- shoot your swarm launcher at every enemy vehicle you can find. pile on. i can't tell you how many times i've wished i'd had even 1 guy with a militia swarm to double team a powerful tank with me. the swarm doesn't get a lot of ammo, but that's why you have nano-hives.
- stay near other players but don't try to hide behind them. an assist is worth half a kill and you have minimal risk for being out in front.
- try to be the one to hack the objective whenever possible, and remember to defend them afterwards. a completed hack is worth 2 kills, but you get nothing if the enemy stops it. don't do this at the expense of shooting a nearby enemy however, even if you have a nearby friendly already handling it. land 1 bullet and you get an assist. land enough bullets and you might actually save your teammate. you can always hack the panel 3 seconds later.
- go into your options and turn voice chat on. |

Welcome, and realize you're going against lots of people that would essentially have years of skill points in these matches, and would typically be doing more important things than fighting for stuff newbies would fight for.
This is not a typical FPS, and the name FPS is accurate, but a limited term for what Dust will be.
Also, go to the marketplace and buy all the miitia items (just 1 each) of the items you are interested in.. and make your own fits. |

There's about to be a character reset here very shortly, so we'll all be technically equal to one another once again but b4 that time comes, you'll need to get a feel for what it's like to train your core skills up ( particular dropsuit, weaponry, engineering, electronics, shields, weapon capacity, weapon sharpshooter etc... ) |
