Unless they change a lot of fundamental problems then I can't see this game catching on the the mainstream gamer for more than a year. I really like the potential of this game. I like how it is revolutionary, I like the art, I like the amount of weapons. I like a lot of things about this game. Despite how much I want this game to succeed, I can't imagine how it will, and I think it will be hard for Dust 514 to catch on and the devs know this - hence the reason why it is free. This game will be free to play because how hard it is too catch onto and for how long it will take to fully balance.
I like the amount of weapons but really, there are only one or sometimes two weapons from each class worth using once you have them all unlocked. The moment you can get a better weapon you usually will rendering every weapon before it now pointless. The weapons and equipment don't cost enough to make negotiating the perfect/near perfect fit for you something unobtainable, and that leads to probably the biggest issue.
Probably the biggest issue is that despite your natural talent as a gamer, despite scoring perfect headshots, despite getting the drop on someone, is that if you don't have your character as developed, as equipped as the opponent, you will lose. This game is marketed as MMOFPS - which is what MAG was. But in MAG, people could vet their character, go all the way from level 70 back to 1 and do it all over again having to earn every unlocked weapon, piece of equipment and perk back as they go and they could do just fine. I could still get 2,3,4,5 to 1 KDR's even in Domination, with 256 players all running around lobbing grenades and trying to kill everyone.
This game is not like that. This game is not like an MMOFPS. it's really more like a MMORPGFPS - and I think that is something the developers haven't really made clear enough because they haven't really thought about the difference yet. I've heard repeatedly where they say it's an MMOFPS. The critical difference between an MMOFPS and an MMORPGFPS is one word: Talent. In the RPG variant, all you need is time to 'level up' your character and one on one you will demolish any character that is not as leveled up as you. In the non RPG variant, it doesn't matter so much how much higher leveled the enemy is - you shoot them with even half of a clip from any weapon and they die. In this game, you can empty an entire clip into someone and they won't die because they are higher leveld, better armor, shield/armor extenders, etc...
Headshots in Dust don't seem to matter enough. It seems like they do a bit more damage but it isn't worth the effort to aim for them with how chaotic the aiming system is right now, combined with how fast people can change their direction.
In this game as a scout, I've been shot at, turned around to see it's a scout emptying his SMG on me, then I shoot him with maybe 10 bullets from my Proto Ishikone Assault SMG and killed him. It's obvious he just started playing and is probably regretting buying the merc pack and trying to use that Dragonfly armor. In a MMOFPS, he would have killed me. He got the drop on me, he fired first. But in this game, with my time I've spent putting better stuff on my character - I won WITH NO CHALLENGE WHATSOEVER.
This isn't an MMOFPS, it's an MMORPGFPS, and people won't like knowing that they don't even stand a chance at all despite their gun game talent. No matter how much you level up, there is always going to be that heavy proto armor with shield/armor extenders scrub who will make you burn through way more of your ammo than you should, only to end up killing you, and that isn't talent. The developers need to make this game an actual MMOFPS and not an MMORPGFPS. The modules and armor you can equip should give you a slight advantage but should not be able to revolutionize the way you play. |

I really hope that there'll be some sort of matchmaking that puts people with equal success together. Otherwise I simply can't see anyone play this game.
I have advanced assault suits and a bunch of prototype stuff unlocked, but I don't use it because it feels like cheating. How can I feel good about an ingame achievement when I can't know whether I did it due to my skill as a player or due to the skill of my character? If I knew I was fighting people with similar gear I could feel much better about my progress. |

Be careful what you wish for. In EVE noobs don't venture where they don't belong because if you do you die quickly. Teamwork and specific skill sets will be critical on the battlefields. When CCP launches Dust everyone will be different in about an hour and most will go to a planet suited to their play style, skill set and skill level. You will be blown away once corporations come into play.

Most of these complaints are coming from the fact that we're currently all playing in the same group together, since there's only one set of maps and we all have to share them despite our skill levels. The poster above me is absolutely right: you don't see random new players out in null-sec because they'll just get thrashed. When new players start this game, they're going to start off in Faction Warfare as part of a group of players that will both be on the same level as them, and be all the way speced up in a certain field, and everywhere in between. As they work the NPC contracts with their peers, they'll gain the SP to work on a specialization of their own, and by the time they join a private corp to start taking more lucrative contracts, they'll have a specialization that they can perform well enough to survive on the field. That's not even mentioning the fact that you'll probably also see people getting together with friends to do PvE to level up, if that's to their tastes. Its part of why the variety of content available is going to be so helpful towards new players as well. |

I don't think CCP is expecting the game to be mainstream popular for more than a year. It doesn't need to be mainstream popular. What it needs is a core group of players who are genuinely interested in it from a nullsec perspective, are willing to buy AUR to spend on it, and otherwise keep playing it for years while the majority of players pick it up, play it a bit, and move on to the next game.
So "success" here needs to be a bit more realistic. EVE isn't anywhere near as popular as WoW, for example, but it's still a "success", in some ways far moreso than WoW ever was.
That said, very new players facing off against people with a lot of SP in AR and using a prototype AR with etc etc is a genuine issue. I think that CCP needs to take the idea of balancing matchmaking, such that new people aren't so readily thrown into the fire, very seriously. Potential Dust long-term players will be discouraged from playing if everytime they play they find themselves greatly outgunned and unable to contribute much to a fight, let alone be really successful and have a good time. |

So here is the short version.
I am share the oppinion of Fivetimes and the OP. I am a casual player who likes to shoot people in the face for 15-30 then log off for a couple of weeks. It is no fun because I get my ars kicked by higher skilled players with better gear and I it is frustrating and discouraging. I feel I need to play more and grind experience to compete.
I am afraid that casual players will be turn away from Dust because of this and I want Dust to work well for those type of players too. That is what CCP is marketing. So I hope they will have some sort of matchmaking system.
Sorry for the crude english.

Well, keep in mind that you will gain skillpoints passively for all the time that you are offline, meaning that you'll have quite a bit of new skillpoints to apply as soon as you come back. |

I've played this game with both my main character (who has all of my skill points allocated) and a secondary character (who has essentially none of his skill points allocated).
This is my first FPS in over 3 years & my KDR sits around .34% on my main. On my alt it sits at .32%
I've said it may times.
The biggest difference in gear comes from how forgiving the game is of the mistakes you make. This isn't the kind of game where you can charge at every opponent head on, center of body mass him and shoot him dead in one or two shots. The game is more real than that. It challenges you to find cover, work with your teammates, & to out think superior enemies.
Someone's got a sniper rifle that eats straight through your logistics suit? Switch to a heavy suit. The extra few seconds may be just enough to set things up for making a difference. |

Sorry for the crude english. t i play a fair few console fps games, alot of the "casual players" that i play with, still buy dlc etc for the games they play, so yeah i agree , casual players are important too and need some love, and will bring in money for ccp, not just harcore fps players. for me personaly as long as the controls are good , the game is FUN, and my friends play, im sold and will play the game for ages. |

You know why this game won't fail? Because you just posted a novel about it, which means you CARE. Your very presence in these forums is why this game won't fail. The fact that Sony puts money to develop this and offer it for free is why this game won't fail. What's more, you'll be gladly spending money in this game like millions of other players who want to "try" buying aurum, and you'll be thanking Sony and CCP for it. Freemium won't fail on ps3, because it can't by design. |

Same here. It feels like it's been so long since last build, any comments would be redundent or otherwise obsolete since we have no idea about what's been tackled on the devs' side. |

I agree with op 100% CCP really needs to work on balancing this game. The majority of new players are going to be turned off of this game if they join the game and have to fight against a bunch of people they have no chance against because of gear. |

Well considering everybody starts off in high-sec and after awhile the other players will move on to Faction Warfare and 0.0 I doubt balancing will be much of an issue. just my two cents.

this game is not about being faire, or i'm a better player, but about the bosses, the co-ops and factions. if your boss has more money he is most likely going to bully his way and win. that boss is your boss or your enemy, and that planet has probably cost some geek a load of money to proccess, that why team ballancing is pretty much outdated in this game. bully and beat your foes with the best money can buy, be it with the best players or tech or both. |

I've done this, but I was the scout. This happens because few of the hits actually register. You are right, you should have died. But there are bugs. |

Your example of the scout and all these "balancing" issues are massively dependant on the rest of the fitting being used, if your assault suit was heavily tanked or damage modded and the scout was a speed fit with a basic weapon to conserve cpu / pg for other modules or tools then he shouldn't have expected to take you down, even with the element of surprise and first shot.
I think the majority of people complaining about overpowered this and balancing that should first look at the fitting they're using before complaining, this is what's going to cause problems for the console gamers, people who've come from or even had some experience of eve have a good idea for fitting tactics and how they affect your performance, but I think it's something console gamers will take some getting used to. |

First problem with your post: You said MAG was an MMO, it wasn't, it was a lobby game with lots of players and no persistence.
Second Problem: You are forgetting that we are playing on less than 1% of the mechanics of the game, with no team building, conquest, PvE, etc.
Third Problem: You suggest that One v One balance is important. It isn't.
CCP have a LONG history of making good gaming mechanics for sandbox MMO's. In my first week in Eve, I killed a guy that had been around for four years. It was a long shot, he made key mistakes, I got lucky, but the fact remains, it had nothing to do with the age of the character. Furthermore, CCP have said several times in the past decade that they don't care about 1v1 balance and they never will. 1v1 balance is simple, boring, and stupid. They strive to balance an arbitrary number of people by giving everyone the same OPTIONS.
Finally, the free to play is not a design decision based on them feeling that the game is not good....they decided to make it free to play LONG before it become popular in other games. They decided to be F2P like 4 years ago. And being F2P is what will make this game successful.
Every BETA i have been in, there have been people like you who make a long post that follows this formula:
"This game is not like X game I liked X game because of Y and Z mechanics Therefore, this game will fail unless developers implement Y and Z post haste. You're welcome"
It is a false argument and oversimplifies the dimensionality of the game design.

I Really dont belive you know what a MMOFPS really means. i can begin to explain how tiring it is to explain to people. In EVE there is no sucj thing as the ultimate fit. There are so many fittings for so many purposes there are numerous possiblities and outcomes with fittings. AS for the aiming yes you are right it is horrendous right now its a beta new build will come soon so i really dont understand ehat your complaining about. There are some people that have played EVE for years only to get destroyed by someone who has been playing for a few months. it all depends on Skill and how smart you are. fits are only as good as the person maing them remeber that. |

It's very much the fault of the scout who walked up to you and tried to take you out with an SMG. He'd have been better off knifing you once then trying to shoot you up. (Nova Knife deals 150 damage in one shot, which is significantly more than the SMG, but lacks the SMG's range, allowing them to close in, hit you, then finish you off.) Additionally, if he had used a shotgun, assault rifle, grenade, or rapid fire sniper rifle it's very likely that he would have killed you before you had a chance to turn around. The worst choices for sneaking up on someone and taking them out are the sidearms unless you have a high accuracy rate & you're confident in the amount of damage you can absorb and deal.
The SMG's become the weapon of choice for so many mostly because it operates similarly to an Assault Rifle the players don't have to adjust to a different weapon setting or worry about tapping the fire button. The second his death notification said "Ishtar" on it he knew he should have tried a different tactic. |
