No one's mentioned this yet but I donGÇÖt see why a sci fi game cant have some magic like in Highlander or the whole warhammer 40,000 thing.
I had a few ideas for this but wanted to start with my more sensible ideas like a resurrection spell instead of nanite injectors.
Not replacing the injector or anything but like another option or way of doing things.
or a spell that lets you fly short distances to make up for the lack of ladders in he maps.
Anyone else got some great ideas for how we could implement magic into dust ?

Well, just because magic has never been expanded upon in the game, doesn't mean it couldn't happen. Who knows, there could be some wiccans hiding out on some of the planets :P In all seriousness though, I don't think magic will ever find a place in Dust, at least not in normal matches.
Perhaps when gladiator matches are introduced, there could be some type of "virtual reality" implemented, that could bring the use of fireballs or frost. I'm not sure I would be a fan of this, but it could add an interesting element to gameplay. People are fascinated by magic now, why wouldn't they be in the future? |

You'd have a lot of EVE players going WTF....
I just don't see it at all, I mean I don't want to rag on you for a suggestion that was given with honest intent, but a lot of people are going to look at this post and think your trolling just because it has NO PLACE WHATSOEVER in EVE lore...
Any sufficiently superior technology is interpreted as magic, if you want magic look to sleeper tech we don't understand that's the closest thing you'll get... Besides someone hurling fireballs doesn't come close to someone hurling thermonuclear artillery... And frost attacks would be raped by the guy with the 2,000 mph electromagnetically charged railgun rods... The guy waving his hands casting incantations would likely be pissed when a logi guy ran up mid casting and stuck the guy with a nanite needle in a split second reviving him and putting them both back in the fight... Flying? Well it may or may not happen, but, god forbid jetpacks are introduced, and then your wandering mage is once again outperformed... To put it simply any magic that DID develop would be relatively rudimentary and weak compared to any of the technology that already exists, and would mostly be for DEV lol's if anything... |

I think this thread probably would have gotten more thoughtful responses with a different title, as several of these posts are clearly knee-jerk reactions.
[spoilers] In the novel EVE: The Empyrean Age, when the Broker needs to impersonate Admiral Noir, he ambushes the elderly admiral in his bedroom and releases from an arm mounted device a swarm of nanites that dissolve him into a puddle of paste. [/spoilers]
Technology such as that is what I think the OP is getting at here. Not "CAST SPELS" but technology that operates in a somewhat fanciful manner. |

Hey .. that's not as stupid as it sounds. Actually it was already mentioned as the "arm mounted device". So all it needs lore wise is:
What is the base of the "magic"? Actually it can't be mana, but nanotechnology can serve as the base of it in the EVE universe. What is the energy source? No magic energy flows in a wand, but a device that generates a field to control, guide and energize nanorobots.
What are it's limitations? It would depend on the connection between the controlling mind and the actual robots. If you got predefined programs on release you could have quite a lot of flexibility and on the other side a limit to the use. (Maybe someone read Eragon.) The limit is the amount of energy the device can supply, which limits the ampount of used nanites. And the carriable amoutn of nanites also limits on how long one could use the nanites until they need to be replenished. (like in the new hives)
Why wasn't is mentioned in EVE yet? Wasn't it already mentioned in remote repair systems? We already have a magic armor repair wand even in DUST.
What would be the applications? Actually every application would need a different program in the nanites, different nanites and would eat up some of your nanites supply. Let's say our "Nanocaster" is on Repair mode right now. It could be also on Restock, Armor Deconstruction or even a Shield Decharge mode. You could have slow moving mass driver like "fireballs" that are programmed clouds of Armor Deconstruction nanites. All that's different right now is that the repair tools are limited to remote repair.
What are the pros / drawbacks? Well they are obvious. As versatile the caster is, it needs to stop the flow of nanites, change the program, recalibrate the new type of nanites and slowly eats up the nanite supply. In game mechanics it has a high versatility because you can change the style of gameplay on the fly. On the other hand it is slow in the change of fuction with a relatively long cooldown after function change (5 to 10 seconds?). Another drawback is that it needs to be worse at every function compared to equal tools or weapons. It repairs slower than a repair tool, deals less damage than a mass driver, is obviously slower on restocking ammo than a hive. But on the other hand it can fulfill all the tasks equipped as a light slot making it the COOLEST Logistics Tool / Weapon out there.
And yeah of course it has insane cpu and PG requirements as it has to energize AND control the nanites. |

Try a vast amount of implants and culturing of her clone that allows her to intercept signals/messages from other implanted beings. It's not magic, she's just able to read the "hard-drive" of another person's implanted brain. |

I like the nano-tech idea Seran. I could see that functioning more like BioShock plasmids than anything. This also allows nano-hives to replenish your supply. As for function, the programs would actually be in our implants, the nanites can do whatever you tell them. Furthermore, i'd like to see the "spells" try to fit into New Eden. Amarrian spells would be firey balls of repentance, caldari freeze ya solid, gallente would paralyze ya to death, and idk what the Minmatar would do...
This has a 99.9999% chance of not even being considered by CCP, but it's always fun to talk about this stuff. |
