-Overall I had a blast. Really like the game mechanics overall. Gave me a real sense of combat and definite sense of reality. Played exclusively Skirmishes entire weekend.
POSITIVES - Sense of immersion with sound, good controls, fast action, real death - definite goals that changed during engagements. Nice combination of vehicles, big guns, and foot soldiers - Very fast match ups - never waited more than a few minutes to get back into a fight. Overall, not many bugs for a beta. Nothing that was a show stopper. - Borrows and is very much along the lines of Eve universe. Nice connection and use of modules, dropsuits, skills. Etc. - was familiar yet also new as a long time Eve player. - Many interesting choices and ability to play different styles. Didn't feel I was too restricted with my options. - Excellent terrain to fight over. Ingenious to be able to hide from bigger vehicles and not always be automatically food fodder when one shows up. - Nice polish to game mechanics - such as being able to drop from any height (as opposed to just dying). Smooth transitions from getting in and out of flight vehicles or turrets. Nice combination of hacking (would like to see more of these "mini-goals" while still pursuing main goals - Liked the system of rewarding both experience points and ISK during match. Although ISK rewarded seemed a bit on the too generous side. Looking forward too some loot on battlefield, and perhaps not just dead players - but occasional loot found on random devices (that might be hacked?)
CONS - Very frustrating as a new player. It wasn't until the second day when I finally reached Assault Rifle 4 training that I was able to hold my own. Otherwise was getting slaughtered in a very frustrating manner. It wasn't fun even though I felt my game play wasn't terrible. In my opinion, either additional heuristics needs to be made for Skirmish - to create more balanced matches - or new players need to be somewhat buffed for survivability so you aren't constantly being wiped. - Spawn sites need to be randomized somewaht. Experienced players would simply know where you would show up and I often got one shotted as soon as I spawned. It was stupid. The spawn/ drop needs to be randomly near the target area but not at the same exact spot every time. - There is a horrible lack of documentation and contextual information - which given today's UI standards for computers game - there is no excuse not to be present. It made my new playing experience very frustrating. It took me way too long to figure out what was what - where contextual info would have helped ease the frustration. More is needed to help new players out. - Another source of frustration is there is no comparison between modules when you are fitting. Other MMOs will show both the module/item you are looking at and the one you currently have fitted - so you can easily compare items/modules. It is frustrating trying to have to either write everything down or try to remember certain stats. I want to enjoy the decision making process of module comparison - not make it into a memory/writing chore.
Overall - great game. Will definitely be coming back for more DUST. I think this is a good promise if more battlefields are designed. Skirmish will work great but people will eventually get bored of it if there isn't more variety - and even more complex objectives.
Kudus to a job well done so far!
