Open mic is awful. Please implement some sort of push to talk, or TS3 / Vent will be the option of many. (I would prefer not to have a computer on just to play the PS3)

Not going to argue defaults. It-¦s subjective. But options must be provided.

I tend to agree and I'm in favour of this because I don't like having to mute my microphone once in a while.

Default should be to receive audio. The current default OFF makes 90% of players even with microphones unaware of voice chat because lemmings do not know that settings exist.
Push to talk requires a button and everything is already mapped, but I don't care. We could make it so that the push-to-talk button is the aiming button. It's still better to hear a barking dog for a second every now and then than constantly as someone obviously has his game playing way too loud. |

I dont know what ive seen every headset has a button to answer incoming calls if paired with a mobile. By pressing this button a bar counts down the time until your mic is off. After releasing the bar fills again. There could be skills to increase speeking time or regeneration. |

Simple mute option via scoreboard will do the trick. I've only had one game where people actually had mics and communicated. The rest of the time it's very rare that someone has a crappy mic etc. |

That's all.
Push to talk OFF by default, because there's no button that's practical for PTT to be assigned to that can be comfortably accessed during combat.
Open mic - assuming you mean the ability to communicate at all - should NEVER be off by default. You still have to manually turn your mic on to communicate, and when you turn your mic on, you expect it to WORK.
Mute should be available to EVERYONE on an INDIVIDUAL basis, and NOT something that the commander should manage for you. Being blocked from communication with the squad because you've offended everyone and they muted you is one thing, but being blocked because you offended ONE person and unable to talk to anyone else because of it? Not a good plan. |

Im an old time socom player my days in socom 3 were some of the best shooter experiances ive had and they utilized push to talk very effectivly as the o button on the controller but with the current mapping of controls i think that be a little hard to do but i would love a push to talk button it makes everything easyer and more organized. Also yes it makes it hard to shot and talk at the same time but its a simple fix to that proplem if ur busy dont pickup the phone if u do ur mostlikely dead already |

It has no real regard to the game but post it. I have modifyed an old mic which just records if you hold a button from a railway stations shelter to use it via bluetooth. I have played for about 3 years with it and it doesnt disturb to press it if i want to speek so it would be a nice invention if you have to push on your mic to speak. |

Not going to argue about the defaults. It-¦s very personal. However, we should have the option to pick the best option for ourselves, and PPT it-¦s quite standart on vent / ts3. And EVE fleets.
EVE is harsh. If you complain about a fleet commander muting you, just try an EVE fleet. You can be blown up by your squad peers for using a crappy fitting, or simply because you "offended" (very very subjective) the FC.
Right now we are on beta, it-¦s a big mess, but very very soon, you-¦ll be part of a corporation. You-¦ll have hierarchy, rules, chain of command, and usually on a disciplined fleet, only the scouts and the fc do the talking. Otherwise it-¦s an echo hell and a big mess of sounds that compromise the whole operation.
Lots of people will simply migrate to a ts3 / vent (like they do in EVE) without a PPT or voice treshold option. Or mute the whole squad, or tell you to shut up and then shoot you (not necessarily on that order).
- Implement PPT - Volume treshold for voice activation (Hands free, no breathers, everyone set their own) - Commanders commanding. (Hater gonna hate) |

Just map the Left D-Pad Button for PTT. Have it when someone hit the PTT button it opens their mic for 10-15 seconds. It's not hard to move your left thumb real fast and hit that left D-Pad Button we do it for the other 3 buttons on the D-Pad. |

I don't like having to hold in a talk button. I would rather the option to press a button and have a 10 second window when my mic is "hot" (not necessarily 10 seconds but a predetermined amount of time).
Or if the technology were there a smart mic system where when I pressed a button my mic became hot and stayed active while it picked up me talking and then shut off when I finished.
I mostly agree that it can be annoying to have to mute my mic "by hand" when I have a background conversation but if the choice was traditional push to talk (hold in a talk button) or open mic, I would choose open mic and mute people I don't want to hear...

Push to talk would suck, and speaking from experience, when you are preoccupied in combat it's very easy to forget. Meaning your team didn't hear your warning that a Sagaris is to their location. The game automatically mutes the mic when you aren't talking. Except for people who are using tabletop mics, the camera's mic, and people playing music. If there is going to be push to talk, it should be an option, so that we can choose, like in Warhawk. |

Nah, I have never liked Open Mics in games because you get little kids who just talk and talk or you get that guy who loves to blare his tv/music really loud for everyone on the team to hear.
You're all welcome to flame me here. But being a Fan of the Socom franchise from Socom 1 - the end (not a big fan of Socom 4). If Socom 1, Socom 2, Socom 3, Socom: Combind Assault, Socom: Confrontation they used PTT mics and they worked really well. Now I know that Socom is a different breed then Dust mainly because Socom is tactical and Dust is a Run/Gun almost like BF3 or CoD.
I do know that PTT mics work well when the game is setup to use that. I think if this game mapped the mic system to the Left D-Pad Button and set it up with a 10 -15 second (pre-determined) open mic timer when pressed, it would be good for everyone. What the open mic timer on this means is that once the button is pressed you don't have to hold it down to speak for the next 10 - 15 seconds (or the set pre-determined time). This will allow the player to get his thumb back on the Left Analog stick and stay focused in what is happening while being able to call out what's going on. Plus this would also stop the blaring of music / loud tv in the game. |

nooooooooooooo, i don't want to waste my gaming time pushing a button to talk, it's probably because you all are PC gamer. I never see a PS3 game with a PTT.
When you are playing strat+¬gie with a full squad and you asking for renfort or description of the action. There is too much trouble to press a button when you are trying to kill the ennemi (Press R1+L1+L3) and move around at the same time (Pressing R3, X, etc etc.)
Here's some idea
First but only mic for your squad only (the leader can switch to other squad to talk when he want) A mute option as well if you don't like people talking

Why is it a bad idea? Have you ever seen a soldier using a always hot walkie-talkie? No they must push a button too to speak. So it would make it just more realistic. |

I thought a bit about this and i came to the decision that nearly nobody uses the text chat in the game. Maybe they could make holding select for a few seconds to open the text chat and make a single click to activate mic for about 15 seconds. select is close to the left stick so you can still look around and it wont take long.
