I have been thinking about how to write this for some time. I find the idea of a Eve online universe free to play FPS a wonderful idea. I have always wanted to play Eve online throughout high school and now into college, but from what I hear from my friends and the time in the beta, it may not be worth my time and sacrifice my education. But a game where I can play a few matches here and there throughout a week, and maybe get into a big game some time at my own schedule sounds wonder, all while set in the scifi world of EVE.
I have been trying out the beta since I was given access to it with the E3 both events. I must say this is not your average fps as it draws from EVE's skill system and realistic item use system. While I admire what they are trying to do, I feel that these system are not yet to where they plan to be, and I hate to say it, somewhat clunky. As for the item system I understand the idea, and would be fine with being this way on release, but having to worry if I have enough in stock to use certain loadouts is annoying at best. While I can see how unskilled players to the game suffer in that they will constantly lose their gear and ISK. They will have a lot of trouble advancing while the more veteran players, who generally die less and kill more often, do not suffer from these and take a major advantage in being able to buy new and better gear as they advance through the ranks. Currently in the beta I understand that what we players gain from each match is much higher than what will be the gains on the completed game, as well what I mention is theory and how I view the situation. I understand the better players should be rewarded for what they gain, and a less skilled player should not get the same skill points or ISK for example. I can see CCP making the instant games ranked based as in players with the same skill level be competing with others who are close to each other.
One of my main issues in this game is shooting with weapons in general. I have played many FPS over the years. Each one has their own feel to it, and each feels right for the game. Yet for Dust it does not feel right. I have been having trouble trying to describe it, and I understand this is still BETA phase. In a way I find it hard to aim with weapons in general in this game. I have tried with different senestivity on my controllers but it still all the same. For many FPSs it is common for an appointment to straf and force the other person to miss and have to reaim. I am used to this in many forms but for this game I find it strange and hard to deal with. In most other games it feels part of the game, and something I don't really complain about, but for dust I feel like they did not make the game to do so. Dust to me feel like a stand and shoot game, not a highly mobile run and gun. I also found even when I did max out my skill in the assault rifle I find it effect little, and felt the same to me as if I didn't put points into it. I find people abuse rocket launchers and they are highly effective against infantry. I also want to say they should be only able to lock onto a target to shoot. I also hate snipers in general, but felt no issue with them this game, I can't remember a time when I was even hit by one.
To put it shortly, it seem vehicles are glass cannons. Powerful, but I often destroy, and get destroyed by assault rifles. I understand, scifi word, powerful guns. But still even then I would like to assume a assault rifle can't destroy a drop ship or even a tank. Seems silly to me that I can.
As I mentioned before, I love the idea of this game. When I think of what it can become I get tingles down my spine. I can hardly wait. But as I play the beta I find myself unimpressed for the most part because the game just doesn't feel right. I make this post today so that the Dust team might learn something and to see what other players think. I ask if you disagree please explain why. This is a friendly post, and I am not trying to attack anyone. Lets make this game the best game ever made! Thank you for your time, this post ended up much longer than I planned, enjoy the game. |

Good post, ignore the trolls.
I can really relate to the issues you're having. The game has a lot of potential and I'm having fun with it, but it's still missing in it's core aspect: shooting. If they can't fix the hit detection and the feel of the guns Dust will not have a very long lifespan.

The shooting is problematic, in part, because of hit detection, which is a known issue CCP have been working on. There are also problems with response time for some actions, which contributes to the general "off" feeling of the game.
I feel like this needs specifically addressing though:

If not, are you getting hurt by high-tier ARs? Because the prototype weapons, EVEN small arms, are a significant step up from the Militia grade armour a lot of tanks are using.
Being surprised at Proto AR vs. Militia tank being effective is like being surprised when a modern .50cal sniper rifle is capable of punching a hole in a WWII-era tank.
If you're on a similar tech level to the guy shooting you, small arms fire should be something to laugh at, but don't ignore it completely - it can still sting, and when a few ARs stack up, they can leave you just vulnerable enough for that Swarm/Forge Gun to finish you one shot earlier. |

I agree with the OP.
Many things need to be fixed and I'm glad that CCP is in the process of fixing them in the next build coming this August.\
As a friendly reminder to ALL PLAYERS, please keep in mind that this is in fact a BETA. Therefore, we are only seeing and experiencing the tip of the iceberg in terms of content, tools, gameplay, economics, politics, warfare, etc.
1. We only have three kinds of maps (Biomass, Communication, and Plateau) and all seem to be on a barren planet or at least in a desert that is in a temperate planet. CCP already told everyone that other planets will be available on launch such as temperate, barren, and maybe ice planets (or water planets, I forgot exactly). Not only that, the maps will be customizable in real time by the corporations that own the districts.
2. Graphics look like crap. That we all know including CCP. But right now CCP has bigger issues to deal with than graphics.
3. The economy has not fully matured yet. Soon (tm) we will be able to put up buy/sell orders with in the secondary market. I'm pretty sure there will be player who will profit from the margins of buying low and selling high without so much as firing a single shot. We have players like that in Eve.
4. We are only testing the vehicles handling and stats to see if they are balanced. If you feel that they are unbalanced then please report that on the feedback forums. Please keep in mind as well that anything militia is weak anyways by design and are only meant to help you understand the controls and what their purposes are. Consider them "training" vehicles and modules. Kind of like giving a kindergartner a pair of "safety" scissors before giving them a pair of "actual" scissors so that you know they can handle them.
5. I see players in Eve who are barely a few days old and are left to fend for themselves in a universe filled with veteran backstabbers. Over time, many will leave. But those that remain become skilled. CCP likes to retain players, but it seems they are more interested in retaining "good" players who dedicate themselves to learning the system. This is why Eve Online is filled with very intelligent people and not your typical scrubs from WoW. Some of the corporations that are part of the major alliances actually function in the same way as real-life corporations such as routine payouts, directors, electing board members, running and managing logistics, mining operations, security details, etc. Imagine seeing that in Dust one day once corporations are enabled.
6. Let's not forget the orbital bombardment that will come in for low-sec and null-sec systems.
Again, this is just a beta and obviously you know that. Even if it's finally finished, it's not really finished. Just like Eve Online, you should expect to see constant updates and new expansions to help Dust solidify its presence in New Eden. |

PS: As an added note, games like WoW and Guild Wars have a lot players numbering in the millions mainly because the companies that back them have tons of money and resources. CCP is not like those companies. CCP doesn't have such vast resources. They have to make do with what they have and they seem to be very good at it given their experience with Eve Online that seems to have held itself pretty high in the ranks for 9 years.
In fact, Eve Online has become so successful that Guild Wars 2 is now incorporating its buy/sell market system onto its own game on almost every level including their own versions of ISK, LP, and AUR. Sounds like Eve Online can't be ignored. That said, God knows what effect Dust 514 will have in the future. |

I completely understand your issue. I used to play EvE everyday but finally realized all I was doing was paying to fill up my skill que ingame and not really getting anything out of the game. So I closed my subscription and quit. At least with Dust I feel like I'm able to do something as long as there are newbies around with the skill level like my own. I will never be one of those power players in Dust or EvE. |
