I really hope that this game can go up to 1000 players or at lest 500 or in the hundreds.
What do you guys want the player count to be? |

If you mean in a single battle -- not going to happen -- even though the back end servers might handle it the PS3 couldn't.
If you mean across all the battles, earlier in the beta there were times when the total player count got up to around 1200.
There was one time when the count showed a huge number, like 4000 players, but the suspicion is that it was either a display glitch or some kind of automated test. |

We had a 1000 people or so on earlier this month. If it's a closed beta and we have those numbers already, I'm sure we'll have 1500+ at release. |

The record I've seen at any one tile were over 5000 on the US Skirmish server and over 3000 on the EU server . At the same time. That were the first weekend with this build. |

Why couldn't the PS3 handle 1000 player. Mag could support more then 256 players, they just didn't want to have more for there start.
1000 would be awesome but 500 is what i want.

Yes, I meant for one battle. Bandwith limitations. And we may be getting 64 vs. 64 not too long after launch because the game has been tested with 128 players in a battle and worked well. |

Numbers have been low in recent weeks (300-500 players during 'peak' hours) Interest in this beta is steadily declining |

thats to be expected.
there are always hordes of people who come back to play when the new build drops.
also not every weekend is an event weekend, where there are much more people.
edit: im hoping for 48v48 for launch, will prob only get 24v24 to start imo. |

If you can play EVE Online on a 2003 computer with dial-up connection, I'm pretty sure the PS3 can handle a few hundred players. In fact, the only reason you can't play EVE on a 2003 computer anymore is due to them using Shader Model 3 now. |

I think 24 v 24 is good. Maybe 40 v 40 or something around there, but no one wants crappy lag while playing a corp battle. |

Having a higher player count doesn't have to go hand in hand with lag. It really all depends on what they can pull as far as server structure. A technical document CCP released at one point described a series of 200 "supernodes" set up at various points globally that form a virtual server space for matches, with the bandwidth allocated adjusted based on the requirements of the match. I can't seem to find that post now, but I remember it pretty distinctly. |

Upon release I would probably say we might have 50,000 players at the most to begin with and I'm pretty sure a lot of them will have already been playing Eve Online.
During the 28th of July however, I would probably say no more than 2,000 and that's me being optimistic because I know there are players out there who don't bother at all with informing themselves on the latest news. |

Mag could support more then 256 players, they just didn't want to have more for there start. 1000 would be awesome but 500 is what i want. It might be possible if a solution like Mag's was used. But IIRC all 256 of those players could not interact with each other at the same time -- they were partitioned into zones made up of fewer players. Perhaps someone more familiar with the game could confirm that.
If the current popping in-and-out of vehicles and players is not a glitch but the first hint at a way to cut down on number of simultaneous players with some kind of dynamic zone system then perhaps DUST is moving toward much bigger player counts.
However I would be very surprised to see 500 players in a head-to-head battle where all the players could see and shoot at all the others. As Chaz Lewis pointed out, keeping all the players updated with the actions of all the other players puts a real strain on the network. And even with the current number of players and the reduced graphic detail the system seems to be having trouble keeping up.
If CCP somehow achieves the kind of very high player counts you are asking for don't be surprised if they also sacrifice a lot in terms of other aspects of the game. With the PS3 they have a budget in computing power and communications capability and there are only so many tricks they can pull to hide those limitations. |

Are we one the same page here? I thought the OP was talking about the number of players in the game in general. Not how many players in a single match. |
