I understand the company has to make profit, but why are they charging $20 to be able to freely play the beta of a F2P mmo? It doesnt make sense to me, and I was upset when i found out I couldnt play Dust 514 because my "trial has ended". Its supposed to be free to play, so why charge to play the incomplete game when the complete game will be free? Secondly, by charging people to play you lose a large amount of input that may make the game better from those who will not pay $20 to be able to play a beta for a completely new game.... |

You are not paying for just the beta access. Think of the beta access as a bonus. What you are paying for is the AUR and several BPCs and BPOs.
Also, if they needed more input from a larger player base, they will increase their player base accordingly. |

You got it all wrong. Really wrong. Dust 514 is a F2P game. Always will be. But right now it's still in a closed beta phase. Closed beta means "invite only".
Now to the Merc Pack. You're not paying $20 to play the beta. You're paying $20 for some unique gear, a 30 day booster, lots and lots of Aurum and a few other things. As an added bonus you also get invited to the beta. Everything you get in the Merc pack is usable in the beta but will be fully returned to you once the game goes live (after the final character wipe).
As for the F2P mindset. Dust, as I said, is F2P. You will be able to download it and play it for years without paying anything to CCP. But as an added value CCP have also introduced Aurum into the game. This is a real world purchasable credit system which allows you to buy different gear types in Dust. These items are either customized (different color suits) or slightly modified weapons. They will only be available for Aurum.
I hope this set things straight for you. |

im sure we have plenty of people who r full time testers that got in free and have interesting ideas we could use more maybe but i dont see it being necessary also u get 50 dollars worth of dust gear/AUR in package for only 20 yeah it was stupid because to the general public it looks like they try to get money out of u anyway they can and i know alot of gaming companies that think like that but hopefully CCP isnt one of them if they do give free expansions (rumors) to the game then i can say without a doubt they care about the game and r not in it just to make money
i also heard if u play slay (in playstation home) weekly u can play the game (dust514) all the time or maybe just beta events and use the code to gain access i never tried it though since i got mine before they released the merc pack |

I see what you are all saying, but I'll make it clearer with evidence.
"What is included in the GÇ£All AccessGÇ¥ Beta Pass?
The GÇ£All AccessGÇ¥ pass is your ticket to every beta event from June 28th until the official release of DUST 514. In addition, GÇ£All AccessGÇ¥ Beta Pass holders will also be able to play on the weekends that are not official beta events. In other words, youGÇÖll be able to play DUST 514 every weekend from now until launch. Be here for every new patch, feature, and update right up until DUST 514 opens to the public."
Taken straight from the link i got from the email that was sent to me.
I stopped playing this game after i realized that the beta key i got from IGN only lasted a weekend. I havent tried since because I was told that my beta access had expired whenever i tried to connect to the servers, which is why I am confused as to why I am paying for access to a beta for a free to play game.

You're confusing two things. What you got from IGN is not "All Access". It was a one weekend only beta pass. What you get from the Merc Pack (apart from all the goodies) is a bonus "All Access" beta pass. |

Okay but what I am trying to say is, why am I being charged to play a game that will be free to play? I can most definitely wait until the game is polished and commercially released. I dont understand on the companies part why they are charging for people to participate in such a crucial part of development, that may steer the game in the right direction. |

I suggest you read my previous posts in this thread again. In addition, CCP don't want to let just anyone in at this stage. Dust is at a real beta testing phase. It is nothing like the fake "beta" versions of other games like BF or CoD. Those are just early access rights to a finished game. In Dust you actually need to run around and find bugs, try new things and generally try to break the game.
So why give access to Merc Pack buyers? Because then you weed out the casual "This game sucks" players and keep only the hardcores who will beta test seriously.
And again, you're not paying to beta testing. You're paying $20 for a $50 collection of gear and Aurum which will be available to you once the game is out. |

why do people pay to get into the dota2 beta? that's supposed to be free to play.
you can just wait... i dunno what you wanna hear.
some of us signed up for this months ago and have been following it for even longer. at one point before the merc pack you could get free all access codes from playstation home just for watching some trailers and completing 1 round of a minigame. anybody who actually cared enough to try was given ample opportunity to get in for free.
so... sorry that beta code you were handed out of the blue for that game that wasn't even on your radar didn't last forever? |

Yes, CCP is essentially giving those who want to part $20 early access they might not have had.
Yes, this will be a F2P game upon release, and the merc pack isn't required to play the finished game.
Yes, I paid $20 for the stuff even though I had an All-access beta account already and I still think it's worth it.
No, this is not a big deal to get spun up about.

They had many ways to get a All access pass to the Closed Beta but you missed them all. So in a way its your fault you didn't get an All Access Pass to the closed beta in the past. And the Merc pack you aren't paying for the Beta pass, you are paying for everything else that comes in the merc pack which is like a starter pack for the game when it releases, you get 4000 Aurum in it and by itself that is already $20. |

Another one of these threads?
you can get FREE access to the beta one weekend at a time through other means. You aren't REQUIRED to pay unless you want the all-access pass (many of which were given away free as well). The Merc Pack is only ONE method of getting in, and that's not the core purpose. |

Seriously ? I had a guy on a french forum yesterday (wich makes me suspect it could be you lol) that wouldnt understand that this MERC PACK isn't a PAY TO GET IN BETA pack but some sort of pre-order pack with the BONUS of entering the beta. It has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that the game will be free-to-play when it's released for Fuk's Sake !
And even at release, i expect to see a lot of pack of that type ! Still, people will get to play totally free of charge if that's what they want.
Now back to the merc pack.... I would say without a doubt that there are A LOT more people who were happy to spend 20 bucks in a game they wanted to try, knowing they would get all the perks from the pack in the full game instead of just being stuck outside of the beta.
=> Besides, this merc pack may be the only way i know to spend money once and use it twice oO |

its a win win but if you are complaining on how you had to spend money to get in the beta thenwhy did you buy it in the first place
i got invited from CCP but i think what ccp should try is this
path of exile does it and it seems to work Add a random beta key giver on their dust website that gives out a key to a random person every 4 minutes and shows the previous winner and the upcoming winner
i stared at it for an hour then got bored and spent 10 bucks for a beta key lol |
