I've seen several threads on the subject of fighters themselves, but part of what I'm interested in is how the controls for them will work. For instance, I'd lean far more toward an Ace Combat style of full control than a limited "move stick left to turn left" system like in Starhawk. As a further example, I think all of you Tribes players out there will agree that the control setup for the Shrike in Tribes 2 is -FAR- superior to the Halo Banshee-style handling they gave it in Tribes: Ascend.
And yes, I would figure that having fighter aircraft visible in 2 of the 3 trailers, having shown one in flight in the 2009 FanFest stage demo, and having that same aircraft as the holographic model for the vehicle fitting menu in our quarters are all pretty good indicators that such aircraft are an absolute certainty.
That said, what are your opinions on possible controls? |

I want a gunship - same controls as the Dropship, but with a mounted front-firing weapon controlled by the pilot, and no passengers (still has gunners).
As for ACTUAL fighters, they have to be VTOL, but you should be able to switch from VTOL to free flight, and in free flight, you have constant forward thrust, and different controls. Preferably with at least two different control schemes. Default should be "basic" controls, which are the simplistic ones, like the standard controls in Ace Combat: Assault Horizon, or like a lot of FPS games have with their simplified flight controls. If a player wants more freedom when flying, switch to "advanced controls" and get it. This would work like the standard controls in every Ace Combat game before Assault Horizon, and any other game with proper flight controls. |

Standard, regular flying controls would be best. Ace Combat or HAWX style. Also, flight stick support = I'm buying a flight stick. |

If it were up to me, I would make it akin to DCS A10C
But I don't think thats everyone's cup of tea |

No more hovercraft please! If we have fighters they need to be in constant forward motion unless grounded <3 |

The maps are far too small for good fighter-jet style combat. I'd like to see them, and bigger maps though.
But what I'm really chomping on the bit for is a pilot+gunner combat hovership that flies like a dropship. I might even stop squishing people and tower sniping then. [sic]

As far as was shown in the 2009 FanFest presentation, the fighter aircraft will in fact be VTOL, so we won't have to worry about runways or anything. Also, all the "maps" we're playing on right now appear to be small slivers of the total area available, so once they're opened up more, we should have plenty of space for flying.
I'd also like to see some sort of gunship aircraft, and I would hope they have one planned, as that would be the perfect counter to Marauders, even more-so than Forge Guns and AV grenades. I think the only reason anyone complains about them being overpowered is that its hard to be in a position to hit them from the ground without them being able to tag you back, which is of course the whole point. Ideally, if you want to take out a tank, and you don't have another tank to do it with, you want to hit it from the air.
Part of the reason I'm looking forward to fighters is due to DevBlogs, Dev statements, and the Future Vision trailer all hinting that heavier airstrikes will be delivered by EVE players via the Fighter Drones that carriers use. Right now, those go for about 20 mil per unit, so I can't be the only Duster that wants to be costing a carrier pilot a couple hundred mil in losses.
As far as the idea of having Basic and Advanced controls, I'm not entirely opposed to that. I would still like a more advanced control setup to be the default, as I think it would lead to people without the skill to fly properly staying away from these assets, thus reducing costs both to them and to their corporation. My primary concern is that we don't end up forced to use a Starhawk type control scheme, which I find needlessly restrictive. |
