CCP has mentioned on several occasions how it sees the campaigns in other games as glorified tutorials on how to play the multiplayer. I think they definitely have a point, but maybe that kind of glorified tutorial is exactly what DUST needs. Lets face it, the game is very complicated. Things aren't readily apparent or self explanatory. To be clear, I'm not complaining about these things. I wouldn't have any game attached to EVE be any other way. But for players who aren't as comfortable with this level depth, maybe a campaign is exactly what we need.
I'm not suggesting overly bombastic or extended, but just something basic enough to give the DUST equivalent of the EVE new player experience. A quick story of how the character you create becomes an immortal soldier, and along the way teaches you many of the basic systems of the game such as fitting, skill training, the market, and how to go about joining your first corporation.
Anyone have any campaign ideas? |

Just take a look at Eve Online's epic-arch-based missions that are related to the Eve Chronicles. Those are good examples. Epic-Arch Missions (another was of saying campaigns) are, however, just glorified tutorials. The real gameplay comes from the interaction with other players (either as friend or foe).
Just take a look at the examples from Eve Online. That alone brought fame and fortune to Eve. Imagine that being applied to Dust.

Beta.
Also, no campaign. There will be PvE, but no campaign. That's CCP applying a story to a game where they rely on the players to make their own story. The only story you see active on EVE's gameplay is small story bumps, e.g. the Sansha invasions.
It'll be rogue drone PvE or perhaps guristas/sansha, but I very much doubt there will be a campaign. |

Im certainly not expecting a campaign in the beta, and probably not even the first release, but it would be a good way to get new players acquainted with the basic mechanics of the game before they start fighting for corporations and creating their own story. Something like the epic arc missions would be a great addition in the final release, if only to make it more accessible to others. |

I can sort of see a training camp for new characters. It makes sense for new troops to haev to be trained to use various weapons and suits... Perhaps instead of picking a "specialisation" at the character creation screen, you can play around with different suits and weapons in a boot camp, or something, and choose then. |

I'm hoping for some glorified tutorials. Having played the trial of EvE recently, CCP's tutorials should be fine. I can see it being very useful. But a campaign? No... Training missions which lead into each other just like EvE? YES!!! And allow grouping for them, just so there is somewhere for people to "hang out". MAG's tutorial is a brilliant example of fail. |
