IGN.com wrote:Why CCPGÇÖs ambitious shooter might point to a more imaginative and less combative future for games CCPGÇÖs Dust 514 is probably not a game IGÇÖll ever play when itGÇÖs released, but every time I see it I find myself wanting to invent reasons why I should. IGNGÇÖs Colin Moriarty and Keza MacDonald have both written fine explanations of its extraordinary scale and shooter bona fides. ItGÇÖs true that we have lived through an era when online shooters defined a large part of what constitutes a GÇ£video game,GÇ¥ but itGÇÖs not DustGÇÖs ability to add to the complexity of this form that excites me. Dust 514 is filled with empty space in the best sense of the word. The three times IGÇÖve played the game at preview events I find myself wandering around its enormous maps imagining what else one might do in those spaces besides shoot. Science fiction games often default to using shooting as a central mechanic, from Quake and DOOM to Mass Effect 3 and Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The go-to interaction in the future has been gunplay. Pretending to shoot at things doesnGÇÖt excite me anymore. IGÇÖm not interested in beating people nor mastering anything. As you wander around the maps you can see open vistas with outposts sitting atop mountain ranges. This setting immediately triggers a deeper and more primal response to science fiction settings, which is not to fight but to simply explore something new and strange. To me, the combat often feels like a distraction. Read the rest of the article here... Thoughts?
I agree with the general idea of the article, pushing FPS (or rather MMOFPS) games in a direction other than "Shoot this and run", but how much could you possibly accomplish without stripping the game of its genre entirely? The game encourages and emphasizes teamplay, building relationships with other players to form corps and gain a greater dominance in the EVE universe. However, how much could they possibly go to make a game somewhere in the veins of survival and expansion while still retaining the competitive FPS edge a great number of players are used to? It seems to me that CCP is currently trying to balance both ends on a wobbly scale. I do stress again how much potential the game has, though. |

I wouldnt mind if they add 'city' districts where you can jsut raom around no guns (probably in stations only though) or free explore zones where its a free for all (but what are the chances somone else is in the zone with you?) looking for stuff like clues or resources to get something else built. |

I like that idea. Regarding the author's point on survival, I don't want Dust to be a survival simulator, but the thought of simply exploring uninhabited planets or locations for the sake of setting up territory or salvaging goods to be used for weaponry or armor is a neat idea. It's also one which could possibly fit within CCP's vision for the game. Of the MMOs I played (Not many, heh), there has always been an exploration aspect, often rewarding the player the same way in which they earn rewards in combat. With all the lore EVE has to offer and with all the planets to discover, it would really be a waste to just simply shoot each other, allocate skill points, then shoot each other again for the entirety of the game. |

Did they confirm any of this? I have not been following DUST until this year's E3. |

From what I gathered in the article the writer simply doesn't "get it". It could be due to the builds he's played. Maybe they cut out the customization. Simplified versions made to appeal to traditional shooter fans maybe? I know it took me a good deal of time to figure out what the heck was going on in Dust 514. IMHO, the writer is merely superficially scratching the surface of the title.
I don't think it's fair nor informative to dab one's toe in the water and do a fairly lengthy write up. If nothing else he should have jumped in before writing his piece.
Too often on IGN the cart is put before the horse.

the articles is very pro dust. The beta is just shooting, it's whats beyond that that's exciting.
The survival PvE mode will hopefully be epic.
I'd say he's spot on wanting to play with the non shooting parts of the game, I'm down for that too. Great in mag/tribes/BF3 to just travel some times. Orbital bombardment and so on.
I think the best way to say it is, it's just a beta and it shows, but people are cautiously optimistic at the moment. God I hope we get some kind of preview of the new build soon |

Personally I think IGN anything is trash. Played a few games where they did reviews that were horrid and one (MAG) where this guy played like a total noob and was only level 7 or 8 and thought he had enough experience in the game to give a review. Surprise that it was a fail review, the guy didn't even know what he was talking about.
The quoted portion of the article is fail too imho, sounds like the writer just wants a game where he can wonder around giant maps without shooting people. Maybe he would like journey?
An FPS game that's not centered on shooting people, LOL. Not a FPS game then imo. |

I think the he fails to note that DUST is just as much MMORPG as it is MMOFPS.
One big thing people don't realise, is that in DUST, like EVE, you don't need to fire a shot. Wars don't NEED to happen. Even in our beta games we could, in theory, all stand around and talk about it, or decide it in a race or sharpshooting competition.
Granted, fighting is fun, it's an option yes, and people often take it even when diplomacy would be easier (says something about human nature). It's that kind of scale that brings DUST far above halo and CoD. Even though it's less visible in the current build. |

I should probably mention that I played a match today where I had 50k+ SP without firing a single shot. |
