As someone who has been involved in developing First Person Shooters in the past, I can actually tell you that Graphics actually have a considerable effect on the gameplay.
In-fact there have been times where "balancing" a weapon often has less to do with changing the stats behind it and far more to do with tweaks made to the animation or perspective... the issue comes down to the game accurately portraying the action that is happening, which graphics have a major effect upon.
Although I very much doubt most reviewers or even players who want their games to look photo-realistic understand this when they ask for better graphics ... so I'd probably be with others saying graphics in those terms are less important, but even something as subtle as how much colour is in the scene (which right now DUST looks very washed out and bland colour-wise) can have an immense impact on a players enjoyment.
There are frankly more things wrong with DUST than simply graphics though. Collision and Performance are considerably poor still. Sure the performance was greatly improved (particularly network wise) with the last update, but the Physics are still incredibly poor quality.
Prior to adding any "variation" weaponry or such, it is greatly important that features such-as Physics, Maps, etc... receive the highest priority with very regular (these should be at the very least WEEKLY updates) so that regular feedback can be provided.
At the pace that CCP are currently pushing out updates there is almost no point to providing feedback as it can be up to a month before any changes are acted upon - this means by the time we provide feedback we are already using an old build.
As it stands DUST right now feels like a Community Modification, with people who don't seem to know what they're doing but want to give it a go. I have no problem with this when it comes to ModDB projects, but for a game intended to be a AAA Console Title this honestly is unacceptable.
Saying "Oh well DUST will be unqiue, so won't be competing with Game X" ... sorry but that is just crap. Regardless if you want it to be compared to the other AAA titles, it WILL be. This means the game either has to step-up in terms of quality or the community that will end up playing it will be too nitch+¬ to support it and end up fading away.
The game that everyone keeps bringing up MAG might've have a fantastic concept and been fun for those who played it, but fact is it is no longer online... thus dead. Look at it through whatever rose-tinted glasses you like doesn't change this fact either. It had the potencial to survive for the lifetime of the PlayStation 3, where-as you look at Halo 3 for example; which STILL has an adverage of 1million concurrent players.
When you keep in mind that games like Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, which sold 7x as many copies as Halo 3 only have an average of 1.5-2million concurrent players... it might dawn just how important quality and gameplay is. I would say as it stands, CCP have thier priorities and focus wrong. |
