ok, i realize this has been hashed out in previous posts, but i thought i'd weigh in a little, and if i assume a few things in my lack of detailed knowledge of the EVE universe, please forgive me.
i personally can't see why spawning back into the world in a vehicle is either unrealistic or unfair. looking at it from what i consider a relatively realistic viewpoint, you get into the world in one of two ways. 1) you are dropped in from orbit when your attacking fleet arrives and the invasion begins. doesn't apply for defenders, bear with me. therefore, that first spawn is actually more like an orbital drop in some sort of pod or whatever. why is it so hard to figure that you could climb into a tank instead of a drop pod if you paid the money for the tank and transport? is it unfair or unbalancing? well, as someone already pointed out, EVE is inherently unfair, just as in real life. from the invading corp's standpoint, what's the incentive in dropping in a highly paid, highly trained tank driver without his tank, so he can stand there with his thumb up somewhere it doesn't belong on a battlefield while his tank drops in separately? i have no doubt they have the technology to put someone in a vehicle and deliver him safely (or as safe as a battlefield can be, anyway), so why not do it? from a real world point of view, having the ability to get that tank rolling as soon as it touches down makes absolute tactical sense to me. want to keep the guy off the field longer? make the spawn time 30 or 40 seconds. could be explained as having to unpack your tank, then put it into the delivery que. there, he's out of the fight longer. so what if you don't get to kill him twice? why should he give you that chance if he has a choice?
2) the other way you get into the world is through the CRU. to be honest these don't make real world sense to me, it's all game mechanic PFM (pure freaking magic, substitute you're own chosen f word), where a clone or 20 that you dragged 50 light-years is awoken after the last one got chewed up in some tank's treads. how did the clones get there, unless you're a defender? are they dropped in from orbit? and if that's the case, then wouldn't you be screwed if the enemy blew up your CRU, leaving you with no clones? are they assembled by nanites from local materials and stored people blueprints? and how can they do that in 10 seconds? i get that there has to be a bit of hocus pokus, just to keep the game moving. now if you can't orbital drop after the first time in, then not spawning in a vehicle is completely understandable, as the CRU isn't going to nanoassemble a tank along with all the clones it has to put together, or whatever it does.
i understand the unreasablness of this compared to a previous example of dying, waking up in one station and flying to 2 more before you can get back into a fight, but honestly, is there a game mechanic reason all those steps couldn't happen at one station? it's been 5 or 6 years since i played EVE, and never got very far, split my attention too many ways, but i always remember having my ship and clone all in the same station if i got blown up. granted, i didn't get pod killed that often, so maybe it's harder when you're higher up and have better equipment, but still, if you had the choice, i'm sure you'd do all three steps in one place if you could. well, the battlefield in DUST is smaller scale than that. unless your clone is getting flown in from your merc quarters every time you die, then everything you need to get back into the fight is right there in the invasion fleet (or on the ground at your installation if you're defending), so the point of being invulnerable when spawning in DUST as likened to having to perform all those steps where you're vulnerable in EVE doesn't really click for me. if we did it that way in DUST, you'd spawn naked at the CRU, have to run to another installation to update your skills, then run to another station to grab all your equipment so you can go fight again, all the while dodging bullets and forge gun shots. i don't see the 2 being comparable. it's simply a question of where your resources are.
i appologize if it sounds like i'm attacking someone's point of view, it's just that i haven't heard a reason outside of it being unbalanced (another word for unfair, in my FPS dictionary), and therefore, isn't a real argument. ask the newb right onto the field who got ran over as soon as he spawned if that was fair or balanced? i'm betting the answer is no, but from the vehicle driver's point of view, that was absolutely fair. it's just his tough luck to spawn where he was driving, *snicker*. all a case of point of view.
as the saying goes, all is fair in war. if you're looking for love in a FPS, then you're in the wrong place.
