It happens a lot. You blast away at someone, reduce their health to an inch from death, and then someone else fires a single shot and gets the kill credit while you end up with only 'Kill Assist". And vice-versa too; someone else does the majority of the effort and you swoop in to finish their target off for the credit.
Both instances bother me, and I've been at both ends with them more times than I could count. It's not fair to either player, and it's frustrating when you keep doing the lion's share of the damage only to get partial credit.
I'd like to suggest a different way of doing things, wherein the person who does the majority of the damage gets the kill credit, while anyone else gets the partial credit. As long as a player is responsible for 50%+ damage to the target, they're rewarded with the kill since they contributed the most to the fight.
Or another way: to get full credit, you have to do at least 75% of the damage, otherwise it counts for half unless you do less than 25%, in which case it counts for 1/5th.
ALSO
At the end of the battle, when it tallies up Kills/Deaths, there should be a column for assists. Perhaps also columns for vehicle kills/assists as well. |

I agree. 100%. I just posted my comment in CCP's questionpro survey at the end about how this is the biggest problem right now for me in this game is how SP are addressed when you break down kills and assists and objectives.
Exactly what I said in my survey submission.
""" PLEASE consider revamping the award rate for kills and assists and how you determine who got the kill.
nothing is more frustrating in this game then as a player I have done more then 50% of damage to the target, I worked it down, I as the most contributing player to the death of that enemy, should get the +50 and the kill award. If I as a player assisted in any kill I should get awarded the +25. -- This would prevent obvious people from getting ahead via kill steals. Award an extra something for headshots, that takes real skill. alternatively award other points for various things, ie: most assists.
Also how many assists you got should be recognized at the end of game information, it makes some people look worthless and nothing feels worse then knowing you helped a ton but you see your at the bottom and only deaths are what people will remember you by? sorry that's lame. """ |

What they should is award point based on percentage of damage dealt. So if you do 75%, someone else does 18%, and another does 7% then you get 75% of the 50 points and so on. |

I support this, wholeheartedly. I feel like I've been stealing a lot of kills lately as an SMG scout. I try to flank people already engaged in combat (with the intent of helping my comrades survive), but the SMG's rate of fire is so high that the final bullet to hit the enemy will probably be mine.
I shouldn't get the kill just because I turned the bullet hose on after someone else has whittled the enemy down 75% or more. |

I agree to this idea. Me spraying bullets from my HMG = many kills. (Sorry for all the stealing btw)
But I believe that CCP is going to make this work one way or the other. |

I get a lot of kill assists, but often it is because me and at least one other player have some poor sap in a crossfire. Since there is a no tally for assists officially, how about making every two assists add to your lifetime kill tally? (much like a fighter pilot getting half a kill marker for shooting at a plane that someone else is also shooting at...) |

The SP award system should be based on damage %'s, but if you didn't literally kill them, then why should you get the credit? I have no problem dealing 75% damage and someone else finishing them off, you never know, they may have saved your ass. |

You all looking at this from a one angle just because in wicked crossfire someone stole your kill. The reward shoud be for the one who did the deed not someone who bited only.
Imagine you were fighting 1 on 1 duel among battelfield, you won - your fit was tighter, you had luck or you were smarter. the enemy took 80% of your armor but you won. You run around the corner carelessly pumped with adrenaline while forgetting that the shields and armor hadn't time to recover, and you being shot by enemy number 2. It's enemy's number 2 success not this guy who lost duel with you. Number 2 was smart enough to engage your awsome fit only when you were hurt. It is his kill, his reward.
Have you ever heard about gold medalist who was leading race 80 percent of distance but didnt cross finish line first? No? Because it only counts who crossed the line first.
You steal some kills, someone steal your kills. it goes around. Its all in the game, yo! |

I agree with this idea 100%.
I'm getting MEGA kill assists but in the end who cares? They're not worth anything.

This is part of why I love the Kill Report system for EVE Online. No matter who gets the final blow, the percentage of damage done by each ship is accurately represented, so everyone can see that your autocannon Tornado did most of the work.
Obviously something of that nature is damn near impossible to implement in an FPS, but I'm all for tallying assists, and the other suggestion of ordering the end-of-battle screen based on points rather than K/D. |

Syndicate (co-op only) gave you points based on how much damage you dealt to an enemy.
A normal enemy worth 100 points, if you did 80% of the damage before another guy finished the target, you get "Assist +80" and the other guy gets "Kill +20" - he gets a kill count, but you gain more points. |

I think this is probably the most fair way. Rewards the assist properly, but kills are important and sealing the deal deserves credit. |

Speaking of, here is the biggest kill in the last seven days on eve-kill.net
http://www.eve-kill.net/?a=kill_detail&kll_id=14099939
Not the highest I have seen - but still 21 billion ISK down the cosmic tidy bowl.

As mentioned above the kill boards in eve are a great way of doing it i think they should be implemented like that if 2 people are shooting at one the 2 shooters get credited with a kill despite what each person has actually done i think this would likly promote teamwork as now even people who are in it for kdr have a reason to work with there team mates they will make more kdr than they previously could have on their own.
I can see the down side of a possible exploit leading to kdr stat padding but i don't think kdr will mean much to a Dust group or a corp hiring them all they will care about is that they can get the job done and well if they spend time stat padding chances are they wont be very good at the rest of the game. |

I agree with the percentage based method, if it can be done with available resources. The only reason I care, though, is for SP purposes. From a KDR perspective, the only thing that matters to me is that the enemy is dead. |
