I was doing great as a gunner on a drop ship with a fellow who was often my pilot. I asked him what would make me better and he told me it was training up Small Missile Turret Operation skills. I didn't even have the book. I bought the book and immediately trained it to Level III. The next two times I was a gunner for him I had trouble hitting anything. It was as if training the skill made me MUCH less accurate, not better. The missiles seemed to come from way father away from the nose of the gun than they had before, and they seemed to travel on a parallel line to where I was aiming -- therefore not getting near to hitting the target.
I think you may want to check into if the levels are working backward from what would be intended.
Thx!

don't abuse Splash Damage from Missiles because you have No Gun skill
if you meant the Machine Gun, thats kinda different. |

Beta,
I'm not sure what you are getting at or saying, but this turret is definitely not a machine gun. It's in the middle of the 3 on the pilot's drop ship, and he told me it was missiles. They look like missiles when it fires, too, with a trail. Usually I can fire it a couple times a second. NOT a machine gun
Did I misunderstand what you were saying? After all, if my gun skill sucks now, why didn't it before?
Thx for your input anyway.

Turret operation skills, from what I've seen, don't do anything for your proficiency at using them. They are purely required to unlock your ability to fit a vehicle with higher tier turrets.
The turrets, and missile turrets in particular, currently have problems when firing from a moving vehicle. As the vehicle moves, it jerks the turret quickly toward the direction of movement (or away, I forget) and then snaps it right back, and if you fire during that time, your shots end up going waaaay off of where you intended them to. It has nothing to do with skills you can upgrade with SP, and is just a bug in how the turrets jerk around while the vehicle they're attached to is moving. Your best bet is to fire while stationary, or moving straight forward or backward, as that doesn't seem to cause the turrets to jerk around (at least nearly as often, if at all). You just kinda have to deal with it for the time being. I'm hoping it's not intentional, but I don't think I've ever seen official acknowledgement that it's a bug. |

Skytt is correct here it seems like.
i have flown hundreds of dropships and have had several of them last an entire match without getting shot down.
here is probably what happend.
you and your drop ship pilot got so many Ez kills in the previous match and everyone got pissed off and started using more swarm launchers more in the next match.
now when this happens pilots go freaking insane. we fly around like chickens without heads trying to dodge the swarm.
while this is happening, it is nearly impossible for gunners to get kills. it has to really be a lucky shot or splash damage.
you should continue to level up yoru small missle turret skill. we really need more gunners in this game. there are enough vehicle drivers, not enough gunners.

Really, guys, truly thx for your comments. But, I have probably flown 40-60 missions with this exact same pilot over the last couple weekends. I know how the darn gun aimed before and it is NOT working the same now. I didn't say we were getting shot down with swarm launchers, having more of them fired at us, nor that we had any problem staying alive. I flew a few rounds with him last night prior to me doing the upgrade of the Small Missile Turret Operation and things were just as they had been before on previous DUST sessions. As soon as I did the upgrade aiming was QUITE different. I flew a couple times with him after the upgrade and before leaving the OP, and about 4 times with him after the writing the OP, and the gun was aiming a whole lot differently. We could be perfectly (almost) still and the gun was hitting, if I was on the right of the ship, far left of the target. If I was on the left of the ship, it was hitting far right of the target. It was as if, all of a sudden, the gun I was aiming was actually being fired from the nose of the ship, or even maybe some distance in front of it, and firing on a line parallel to the one it would fire on if the missile was coming out of my gun. The origination point of the shot being way far forward of my gun was very disconcerting and this is NOT where the shots were originating before I did the skill upgrade.
I won't argue with you, Skytt, about if the skill is not supposed to be doing anything to help with proficiency. About that, I do not know, except that nothing is listed under info for the skill that would make someone believe that it would. I thought it would, but I have no reason to think that what you told me is wrong. I'm also not asking for a course on how best to use the weapon, or aim, or avoid or account for jerkiness, etc., though I appreciate your wanting to help me with that. That wasn't, however, the point of my OP.
Let's forget about whether I hit what I aim at, because that really isn't the crux of this either. As I said, the missile seems to be launching from way up front of the ship and flying on a parallel path to my aim, which does make it hit in front (relative the the ship) of where one would think it would hit. And again, please remember, this was happening when we were almost perfectly still, also.
I think I did a better job of explaining the whole situation this time after having a few more flights under my belt with the gun having this behavior. Sorry if I mislead you or if I wasn't as clear as I could have been in the first place.
Thx again!

i absolutely agree with you mate , the rocket/missile turrets on the dropships are very hard to aim ,shots seem to go everywhere except where i want them , strange because a few times i get in a dropship and the shots are dead on and we go on a killing rampage , but 80% of the time the DS turrets are very hard to control , in my opinion i believe this is a lag/connection issue when the game is refined a bit more and servers are running a bit better i expect this issue to be fixed , oh and the i believe the skill you want is "turret proficiency" not "turret operation" turret op just gains access to bigger turrets |

Southern1Cross,
OTOH, maybe our aim is jumpy because we have "turret's syndrome."
