Quite simply, no. It's bad enough that vehicles allow third-person view, third-person on infantry is absolutely unacceptable. You may not have magical 360 degree SA and the ability to look around corners without exposing yourself. This is not SOCOM, this game's actually GOOD (especially for a beta).
As to the camera drone idea, I'd be all for it, provided that it's handled similar to the UAV in BF3 (one change, though, I don't see an issue with having it maintain station when the user closes out of the active drone control, letting it passively mark targets in view below it). This has potential for later on. I don't think it's worth the development resources at this time, but it would probably be ideal for the first expansion.
EDIT: And as far as Vita integration, I think that would be awesome, but make it an option, not mandatory (otherwise it becomes a purchased feature, which isn't fair or balanced; I have a Vita, by the way, pre-ordered it in fact, so I'm not just saying this because I don't have / don't want one). I'm not really sure how to balance the massive SA advantage of it, though. If you had the Vita to control the drone, and it kept the full-screen drone view in-game, it would make it a pointless gimmick that's actually slowing you down (put down controller, pick up Vita), and if you DON"T have it make the drone screen take up the full screen, then you're letting those with Vitas know what's going on around them while they're busy controlling the drone, which would be a massive advantage over those without a Vita.
I don't really see how it could be fairly balanced without making it pointless and redundant, as cool as it would be. I'm open to suggestions and discussions on this topic, though. |

SuperMido wrote:That would give an unfair advantage to those used to 3rd person shooters over FPS players. So, NO to that idea . Not about the "experience" advantage, it's about the ridiculous, cheap, unrealistic SA advantage third person view provides. Just look at the corner camping in SOCOM and PlanetSide, or the pop-tarting in MechWarrior 3 & 4.
Keep third person view to the casual kiddie games, where they belong. |

When I said experience, I didn't mean actual experience or skills, I meant people who are used to 3rd person will have an advantage. Basically what you're saying, maybe I wasn't too clear. Yeah, except what you're talking about, and what we're talking about, have absolutely nothing to do with experience or skills. It also has no "familiarity advantage" to speak of. It's purely the presence or absence of ridiculous abilities to see behind you and around walls without exposing yourself to view or having any way of seeing those areas. It's a massive, unrealistic, and ridiculously easily and often abused SA advantage that has no place anywhere near any game that expects to be taken seriously.

Could maybe even make it a skill of some sort, or item that you can deploy and get a local ( on your character ) overview
Gallente drone perhaps :) you do realize this is a first person shooter, right? just saying... You realize this just isn't a first person shooter don't you, it is/will be so much more Just saying I suppose i mispoke when i actually said 3rd person view persay i do realize that this is an FPS, but it is also an FPS based on the eve universe and has MMO elements. It is not entirely unreasonable to think that Space fairing conquerors with a lot of technical resources in space ( cloaking, combat drones, Warp flight etc.. ) could come up with a personal combat/survelllance drone that could be controlled remotely with a mod on the dropsuits and used by scouts for intops and even providing targetting information back to the strike force. Scout runs and picks a location out of harms way, launches his drone and does a survey, Even around corners gasp! relays targetting information and moves on, drones of course would be destructable. While controlling the drone the operator would be vulnerable Just something i thought would be cool, thinking outside the box, because this is not just a FPS like COD/MAG/B3, this is a MMOFPS based on EVE and Eve is nothing if not different and exciting I've already addressed the drone suggestion, and I think it's a good idea (it provides an exposed target, so the thing gathering that intel CAN be destroyed; third-person view would break this too, since it'd let the drone see around corners without being exposed and we're back to the original issue).
The issue isn't so much seeing around corners, but seeing around corners without any indication of your presence or exposure. I'd be 100% fine with adding a mirror to the equipment slot so I can check around corners, or a gun with camera mounted on the front that I could poke around a corner (not really sure either of these would work well with Dust's pacing, though), as they provide indication and exposure, giving the guy around the corner the chance to know you're there. TPV gives you the same view, without the exposure, the end result being that you're effectively looking THROUGH walls. |
