I talked with some people in the IRC channel the other day about this, and everyone seemed to like the idea.
I would like to be able to customize the placement of my HAV small turrets, in both location and rotation:
1) Location - Be able to place the two small turrets in any of certain preset locations. I imagine front corners, both sides of top of main turret, front and back center, side centers, and back corners being possibilities, but if more locations are feasible, feel free to add. (you wouldn't have to set them up in pairs, you could have a back corner and side of main turret as your 2 if you wanted)
2) Rotation - Be able to designate the turret rotation, maybe get a screen where we see the HAV in an eagle eye view, and be able to select each of the small turrets and see a V projection (like enemy line of sight in various games' radar displays, eg Metal Gear Solid) that we can rotate around until we find where we want the turret's rotation limits to be set to.
This way, everyone can have their own tank to fit their own style of play. If I want to forward-focus both of my turrets vs have one covering each side, I should have the freedom to make that choice.
We decided in our discussion that fully free rotation would probably be too much, but however much of an angle (180, 120 degrees, etc) that feels like a good amount would probably just be something that had to be tested to find a reasonable limit. Too high of an angle would lead to the tank having no weak point, which is what we wanted to avoid, while still allowing customization to fit our own personal driving styles. |

This is definitely a good idea. The simple fact that the top turret on a HAV can't rotate left is annoying, even when it's mounted centrally (like on the Soma.) |

I think we have the first gunner specialization skill hidden in this idea. Base angle could be 90, but a gunner's skills could bring it up to maybe 120.
I really like this idea by the way. Makes observing the enemy before attacking more rewarding. |

Interesting idea. It add's a degree of specialization to vehicles that makes it interesting for both the driver and the people trying to kill the tank. A potential twist to the idea - have the arc range of the turrets be dependent on how powerful the turret is. Ie: small short range blasters have a large arc range but low damage range. Railguns have low arc but high damage and range. |

I like this idea too. We definitely need more HAV-related skills in the vehicle/turrets department that do anything besides just unlock access to more items. |
