One thing that I am a little worried about is how they're going to manage how people gain SP passively. Obviously they're not going to let people create a character, come back in a year and then select all the skills they need to pilot the best tank or something.
Or at least that's what they shouldn't do.
So instead, I suggest we look at EVE for how to manage this.
Basically, passive SP generation should NOT go into unspent points, but rather directly into the skills themselves. Of which you select the skill you want to train. If you don't have anything selected to train, then you don't get SP generation. Which happens as a result of finishing leveling up the current skill you selected.
SP you earn in battles would go into your selected skill that you want to train. And anything over would go into unspent points.
This would also mean that you can spend unspent points on a skill even if you don't have all the SP you need. It won't finish the skill, only partially finish it. So that if you are training a skill, and want to do one or two battles one day just to speed up the process, then you can.
What I think this will accomplish is at least getting people to sign in and at least assign skills to raise for SP generation. And then maybe some of those people might be interested in playing a game or two. Increasing the community size.
Note: You still earn SP from battles even if you have nothing currently selected. If you have nothing selected the SP you gain from battles goes into unspent skill points.
Please comment on this. I really want people to poke holes in this. |

Bad idea.
The point is to have a F2P game that when you are tired of you can take a break without taking a huge penalty.
So they want you to come back in a year and have more points to spend.
Part of the problem you are afraid of will be fixed by virtue of how many points it will take to pilot an HAV or Marauder. It would take A LONG time of passive skilling to get into one.
But, being able to take a break for a year and come back and be able to jump into an advanced drop suit with an advanced weapon and able to fill out a lot of your support skills (Mechanic, engineer, etc) is a good thing in my opinion. |

Doing the math, you're right. After a year they would only get like 2 million XP which is decent, I guess but not really enough to fill out all the skills you need.
But I feel as though this system encourages people to put down the game and forget about it. |
