So one of the obstacles facing Nova is how do you reconcile a single shard universe with a worldwide playerbase and the realities of FPS latency requirements
My proposal is a departure from what was in Dust but I think it suits the New Eden universe and importantly allows for players to be at war with anyone else regardless of their location.
Here is Molden Heath, it is currently 100% controlled by the Blue Donut Corp but I want a piece.
I will offer up an open contract to attack it on behalf of my Corp PB Living and claim some territory, $10m per player for a win, $1m pp for a loss. Once 16 Mercenaries of the same region have accepted the contract (queued up) and Blue Donut Corp has 16 Mercenaries ready to defend in the same region the match is started.
Once the Dust settles if the PB Living wins the battle it gets a $200m payout less the cost of hiring the Mercs, a tidy $40m profit and itGÇÖs territory percentage will increase
If the PB Living loses it gets a $16m loss.
Blue Donut Corp was offering $5m per Merc on victory and nothing on defeat so itGÇÖs position would be $120m profit on a win, $0 on a loss. What about the individual Mercs? Their profit will be based on their payout from Blue Donut or PB Living. Maybe $5m wouldnGÇÖt cover the cost of using deployables so you try and win on the cheap, maybe the lower payout means best players or full squad are not attracted to Blue Donut. In this model ISK is generated on a match completion, so once youGÇÖve queued up a fight why fire a bullet? Why not gather round singing campfire songs?
First there is the deploy costs, it is a sunk cost for the Mercenary win or lose
Second, these are not the only 2 corps involved, any corp could set up a new contract offering larger payouts offer a contract for $12m on victory and nothing on loss and youGÇÖll still be making $8m on doing nothing.
Third, you canGÇÖt lock your territory to choose who you fight against, if there are open contracts against you then you will need to defend yourself. Adding territory decay mechanic means you have to offer open defence contracts if you want to keep it (itGÇÖs not your territory if you canGÇÖt defend it!)
Therefore competition is driving supply and demand to an optimal point and you can have a decent in game economy. Individual Corps or Mercs could get rich but it would be at the expense of others.
Corp tools would allow you to specify who can accept your contracts, such as Squad size, combined win percentage, minimum SP, Standings, Matchmaker Ranking.
On the Mercenary side you could fight for specific corps or just specify the highest bidder, Player/Squad Rankings and statistics could mean that you are headhunted to fight in the most lucrative areas of space.
Obviously the idea is not fully fleshed out but what do people think about the concept?
TLDR Corps high Mercs to fight on their behalf, open contracts mean Mercs can go for the highest bidder, only fighting generates ISK
STLDR Replace FW NPC Role with Player Corps
