The biggest issue is that game developers cling to "OMG BIG OPEN MAP" like it's the end-all feature that every game should have.
Not every game should have big open maps.
Many games that have big open maps, probably shouldn't have big open maps.
People need to get over the obsession with big open maps, they only add so much and only in the right situation.

PvP games that only offer boots-on-ground gameplay have small maps to suit their player limit and the interactivity between each player. If vehicles are in the game, of course the maps would be bigger so as to better suit all play styles. Just look at Battlefield 4.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that Evolve had big maps and the players didn't like the game because it was more like Hide N Seek.
Yep. And let's be honest, you had big maps in DUST but the fighting always took place in the CQC areas anyways. The first step of every single fight was "Pull out your disposable Walmart LAV so we don't have to run for 20 minutes to get the part of the map we want to get to"
And yeah you'll have games that utilize large maps like MAG for example, but theyre set up with multiple stages of objectives so the area you're fighting in is often pretty compact, and when you do transverse the map, it was typically just to move to the next confined area you're fighting in.
"Open World" is a great selling point, but pretty much every time it's an "Open World" full of a lot of empty space with nothing meaningful in it. Id rather have a small map full of interesting things rather than a big map with pockets of interesting things and a whole lot of boring nothingness in between then.

Except you still "fast travel" in EVE by warping around. In fact you never just impulse around because you move too slow to get anywhere remotely distant in a reasonable amount of time.
The game is effectively a series of rooms that you jump between, small instances bubbles. Yeah it's a lot of space but it's all meaningless. It's simply there because it's a game in space but it serves almost no advantage in terms of actual gameplay.

I'd agree. FO4 was actually pretty solid but I did take issue with the weakened RPG elements. If they can inject some of the classic FO RPG elements into the next iteration it'll be excellent.
